Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming build with working NVRAM

Messages is still oddly broken. I cannot send to anybody (I get a failure error below each attempted message), except my wife from her iPhone, but she actually messaged me first because I couldn't initially message her.

I have never heard of Messages working only selectively... If it's working with your wife's iPhone, I assume it's working.

On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and make sure your phone number and the email associated with your iCloud account are enabled.

On your hackintosh, go to System Preferences > Apple ID and delete any unused Macs/hackintoshes from your list of devices.

Yeah, it's odd. I had a buddy message me from his iPhone, and while I got the message I still could not reply.

There are no other devices associated with my Apple ID; I've logged out and back in multiple times via Messages preferences (sometimes the chats go green, sometimes they are blue as a result), but at no point can I send messages to other iPhones. Nothing changes when I enable/disable Messages in iCloud.

So I want to just roll it all back to Catalina, but executing a restore from a CCC backup from the backup drive onto the 970 EVO resulted in a copy of my Catalina backup existing along side the newly-upgraded Big Sur installation.

What is the best way to wipe the 970 EVO and restore my CCC backup? I am trying to erase / format the drive in Disk Utility (after booting into Recovery) but it simply won't do anything when I click Erase (with "Samsung 970 EVO" as the name, "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as the format, and "GUID Partition Map" as the scheme.

The tree in Disk Utility looks like the following (for the 970 EVO):

Samsung SSD 970 EVO 500GB Media
Container disk4
disk4s5
Samsung EVO 970 - Data
Update
Update - Data
Update
Container disk 3
Reserved

One of the 'Update' volumes contains the Big Sur installation (for some reason it was named 'Updated'?) and then when I tried to restore Catalina from my CCC on a separate SSD it created a second 'Update' volume containing Catalina. And now my drive is full.

Thanks again for any help. This has turned into a bit of a nightmare for me. :silent:

did you use your usb installer to reach recovery?

Try some of the following fixes:

I don't think rolling back to Catalina is good "fix"... But if you really want to, you should format your entire SSD before doing a restore.

This was happening with me and my wife's phone. I could iMessage or text everybody else, but with just her phone, I would always get "Not Delivered" It eventually fixed itself after several months. I don't know how.

The work around was to do a group chat with myself and my wife. Which is annoying, but it worked if I had to send something from my computer like files or something. If I had to text her though, I would just use my phone.

Hi @pastrychef , I recently installed Big Sur fresh with OC 0.7.0 EFI. The trouble is, I've copied the working EFI from my USB stick to the macOS SSD EFI partition but it won't appear in the boot menu. It only detects the USB OC. Should I reset the NVRAM or something? Thanks

If you copied the EFI folder from the EFI partition of your USB flash drive to the EFI partition of your boot drive, BIOS should see it.

Make sure that, in BIOS, you have the system to boot in UEFI mode.
