Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming build with working NVRAM

If you want to do a new install, yes. Go through the installation process.

If you want Big Sur, you can either (1) re-do your USB installer with the Big Sur installer or (2) just install Catalina and update to Big Sur after the installation.

For some reason, when I updated the EFI folder for my Catalina USB drive, it was trying to install Catalina when I selected to boot from the drive via the Clover menu...let me try again.

Approx 25 minutes and two reboots...

You upgraded to Big Sur from within Catalina OS, right? I'm trying to test out the EFI folder on the USB drive first, but all it's doing is trying to install Catalina. To be clear, if I want to test out the EFI folder on a USB drive, it has to run through the installation process first before it can 'boot' into the OS contained on that drive?

I'm currently halfway through the install process for Catalina (with the updated EFI folder), and it has some 12-13 minutes remaining.

If I'm missing something simple, please let me know. I feel really stupid at the moment :banghead:

Yes. I usually only upgrade. I rarely do clean installs.

No. You can boot in to any existing installation without having to go through a new installation.

So because booting from the Catalina USB initiates an installation process, there wasn't a full install on that drive to begin with?

I booted into Catalina after 'installing' it via the USB drive, and now I'm updating this installation to Big Sur. If all goes well, then I just need to copy the EFI folder to the Catalina installation on my primary 970 and upgrade?

Ugh...I can't upgrade to Big Sur because the USB drive isn't big enough to hold the Catalina install AND the Big Sur install media.

I was able to get my Catalina installation upgraded to Big Sur after using CCC to create a backup first.

Is it normal for my old Catalina iMac to show up in addition to the Big Sur iMac in my Apple ID settings? Messages is not working in Big Sur, and I'm guessing it's because I have Apple ID "active" on two separate iterations of my Hackintosh...?

Make sure that you copy over your old Serial, Board Serial, UUID, and system definition.

Ahhh, it was the system definition that changed to iMacPro19,1 for some reason. I did not catch that.

/facepalm
