[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

New clean Big Sur installation still yields this when I try to run the Reset User Permissions command:
Could you please describe:
  • What problem you are seeing in one or more of your apps?
  • Why you believe that resetting user permissions is the solution to that problem?
On a clean installation of macOS, all user home folder permissions are correct.

Hi @CaseySJ , there are known/ongoing issues with many versions of Pro Tools and file write permissions that can prevent one from creating new sessions. Usually this can be resolved as long as Pro Tools has Full Disk Access permissions –which should also auto-populate the corresponding app in the System Preferences<Security & Privacy<Files & Folders section.

Aside from building a brute-force PC, the common fix to prevent file permission errors/assertions and CPU overload errors from using Avid's software is:

Reset file permissions as needed: diskutil resetUserPermissions / `id -u`

Disabling tailspind and spindump will help with the ever-present CPU overload issues that do not occur with Logic that has the same session spec as Pro Tools 2021.3.

There are also people who have written Permissions-Trashing apps to repair what Avid won't fix.

These fixes have greatly improved the functionality of Pro Tools since v12.

After wasting 3 days on this, I'm going back to the tried and true Mojave. At least that way I can work and still use PS CS6.

Interim Update:
  • ThunderboltUUIDin IOReg is currently zero.
    • We want to address this problem first.
  • Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adapter is not working in Big Sur.
    • We will address this problem second.
Hi @CaseySJ

I think I have found a solution for point 1 (ThunderboltUUID fixed at Zero)

If you can identify or isolate the specific parameter or file in 0.7.0 that is causing instability, please let us know. This could be quite helpful to others.
@CaseySJ I reverted to 0.6.9 and ran all day with no freezing issues. I then updated to 0.7.0 early in the evening and disabled the NVMeFIX.kext. I ran the remainder of the day without issue, so that is definitely the issue. I'll reenable the NVMeFIX.kext later today and see if I can determine what in it is causing the problem. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • Made a backup of the motherboard BIOS with a CH341a SPI ROM reader. This is just a precaution.

Why? You can use the official Gigabyte BIOS version from their website if you want to revert, can't you?

Mmm. Will this BIOS adaptation destroy TB under Windows?

If you flash official Gigabyte firmware downloaded from their website, with CH341a programmer, you loose :
  • your Ethernet MAC address (displayed as 88:88:88:88:88)
  • your current BIOS setting
  • and all NVRAM datas (installed by macOS on installation)

But can't you just use GB qflash with the official BIOS firmware?

This may interfere with some copyright protected software, what do you think?

No, this only overwrite whole firmware with a standard's one.

Downloaded firmware is flashable with Gigabyte tool like Q-Flash, which overwrite some regions and keep your personal datas (Serial number, MAC address,..) and profils.
I don't remember if NVRAM is also cleared after Q-Flash firmware update.

Older copy protected software would check your MAC address(and other stuff). So if this is reset, things go wrong.
Native Instruments even checks your processor speed. If this field is zero(which is not uncommon on a hackintosh), it will prompt you to re-register the software everytime you try to use your (legit) NI software.
