The Dell OptiMac Big Sur/OpenCore Thread - For 7020/9020 Optiplex Desktops

If anyone wants to attempt Intel Wifi BT via a PCIe adapter in their MT or SFF here is one option.
The Archer T5E adapter from TP-Link.

https://www.newegg.com/tp-link-archer-t5e-usb-2-0/p/0E6-002W-005N2

This adapter is using the Intel 7265NGW card which is supposedly supported by the new Intel drivers.
I have not tested one of these yet. It looks promising as it offers high speeds and BT 4.2 vs. BT 4.0 on Broadcom cards. You can set your router to broadcast 5GHz only to avoid BT interference at 2.4 GHz frequencies.
  • Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 7265
  • Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless N 7265
  • Intel(R) Wireless N 7265
Remember that the BT cable must be connected either to a USB 2.0 header or USB 2.0 port for BT to function. If you do buy one and test on your 7020/9020 SFF/MT please post your results here. The Intel drivers will only get better as time goes on so this is a viable alternative to more expensive Broadcom based cards that may also have support dropped by Apple in the future versions (12,13,14) of macOS.

Some benefits of going with TP-Link and Amazon or Newegg.
  1. Faster shipping than ordering from China
  2. Easier returns if you do need one
  3. TP-Link's product warranty that is much longer
  4. No need to assemble from individual parts

Warranty coverage falls into the 2-3 year Home category.

Maybe this has already been addressed, but I'm a bit confused about updating the config.plist I generated using OC-Gen-X. In the video the example config.plist is quite a bit different, in that I have extra entries in mine that don't exist in the example. In the video, there's an entry in the example under NVRAM for csr-active-config that has a different value than what I generated as well as the one in the video. However, in the video he doesn't change it. That is just one example of several similar instances. Just confused on exactly what is supposed to be changed, because it appears we're not supposed to use everything if it is different?

In short, just confirming that we're only actually making the changes that were made in the video?

Thanks again for your guides.

When you use the latest OC Gen-X app you'll get the latest OC version. It should be 0.6.9 right now. The video was done long ago with OC 0.6.3. There will be some differences after OC gets updated and things change. Pavo makes adjustments to the .plist as things in OC change. You can read the OC documentation on the dortania github site.

Yeah, I get a notification actually that it expects OC .7.0, but that I'm running OC .6.4-.6.9. Not sure what that is about. I looked everywhere for OC .7.0. Maybe it's expected to drop soon.

Thank you for the info.

One last question. I haven't updated to Big Sur yet. If I boot successfully to Catalina using the new USB drive, can I just mount the EFI once I'm logged in and replace the Clover EFI that's already there?

Just looking to at least try upgrading before I do a clean install.

Always make a backup of your Clover EFI first. Save it to a flash drive or another computer so you have it to go back to. When you first boot from the OC USB into Catalina you'll need to clear NVRAM or it may not work. Once you've booted into Catalina test that everything works. Also remember that if you have changed your SMBIOS to iMac 15,1 it may be a good idea to generate a new Serial # that matches that, as well as a new SMUUID. Make sure you are signed out of iCloud, the app store etc. before you sign in the first time with new serials.

Hello. I'm running Big Sur on few 7020s and 9020s without bigger problems. Updating no problems also. USB is working but seems to be slower than on windows. I have an impression that it was running faster on usbinjectall kext before. Any ideas? This is SFF with edited bios. Remapping should be done only on MT version I think? usbinjectall only when bios is not edited?
