[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Hi CaseySJ,
I am slowly making final preparations for the transition to the Coffee Lake system (Gigabyte Designare + 9900K + MSI RX 560 Aero ITX + Corsair Vengeance LPX (2x32 GB) 3600MHz + Apple Broadcom BCM943602CDP + Samsung 970 pro + Mojave 10.14.6).
As far as I can see the "test clips" you recommended are no longer available:

What do you think if an adequate replacement could be the following test clip:

It may be time to do a fresh install on a spare SSD mounted in an external USB 3 enclosure or internally (copy EFI folder to EFI partition of the spare SSD to make it bootable). Without installing any third-party apps (simple utilities are fine), check for system stability. If system is stable, install third-party apps one by one while continuously checking for stability. Eventually all your apps will be installed on the spare drive. Then copy all documents and media files from old disk to new spare SSD so that the spare SSD becomes a fully configured system. Then run macOS from the spare SSD for a few days to ensure stability. If all is well, then carefully erase the internal SSD and clone the spare disk to the internal disk. Make sure to copy EFI folder to the internal disk as well.

No, now I can basically confirm, on my z390 aorus master, after I flashed the titan ridge NVM to latest stock version 50, the freeze are gone,

on z390 designare, there is no way to update the thunderbolt nvm version. But if I replace my memory to corsair DDR4-3000, the freeze also gone.

No way to do a fresh install, the freeze also happens to the 11.3 installer.

Hello @Ali,

It is not necessary to flash the Thunderbolt controller. Most Thunderbolt devices will still connect, hot plug, and work with the original unmodified firmware.

Are you sure you want to flash the firmware?

Hello CaseySJ,
No, I am not sure about flashing. I read your tutorial and went in order to better prepare for the system upgrade. I was under the impression that it was necessary to flash the firmware.
If there is no need for flashing I will not do it.

My super psychological technique worked! :) The premise is simple:
  • Provide a complicated, time consuming, and highly disagreeable option so the owner is self-motivated to try other remedies…and succeed.
P.S. Good job and note that this post is meant to be light hearted.

Good decision. If you encounter a Thunderbolt device in the future that does not work, then let us know at any time and we can advise whether flashing might then make sense.

Hey CaseySJ!

I built my custoMAC off this guide, right from the beginning when you posted this, so it's been a few years. My setup is almost identical to yours.

Since its been so long, I am having trouble remembering, and getting lost while searching through the thread/reading the topics at the top. So maybe you, or someone else could give me a quick pointer.

I've got the MSI Radeon Armor RX580 8GB, 2 actually. This weekend I wanted to try Final Cut with both 580's installed. They are in PCIe slot 1 and 2. Only the 580 in slot one shows up in system report. I can't figure out how to get the second 580 to be recognized in macOS 10.5.3

Any suggestions?

Just a quick note to say "THANKS!", again, @CaseySJ for this awesome guide (and others!). Succesfully used HackinDROM to upgrade OC. It overwrote my custom USB port settings, but that was an easy fix (because I followed your guide and had a proven-good bootable external drive!). Updated OSX to 11.3.1 and everything is working as far as I can tell. Your hard work and efforts at educating are greatly appreciated!

Final Cut Pro users:
  • If you have 2 AMD GPUs, how can Final Cut Pro recognize and use both?
