The 4K Dell OptiMac - 9020 MT - Core i7-4790 - Radeon RX 570 - LG 4K IPS Monitor

Success - just plugged in my MSI GT 710 2GB DDR3 LP into 9020 running Catalina latest 10.15.7 19H1030 - I did nothing just worked. - HDMI and DVI-D worked. I'm running 15,1 SMBIOS. Funny that it never worked under Sierra. Still have on separate SSD will have a play.

Re: the CSM card that looks good. Shame they haven't updated it with 2 DP.

Any mSATA mini (for USFF) Bluetooth wireless cards available which are OOB compatible that you know of?

Some people now use Intel cards with success too. I've not tried that approach yet.

I just have Dell Optiplex 9020, core i5. I understand from the post that VGA output won’t work
Will it be okay if I use HDMI to VGA dongle since I only have VGA monitor?

Doubtful but you can give it a go… probably better to pick up a second hand monitor with HDMI at least or DisplayPort (DP) that way you can run a form of digital to the screen.

The 9020 doesn’t have HDMI unless you’ve got a graphics card in its display port which you can get a DP to HDMI or DVI cable…

I currently have a 9010 MT build using @trs96's older guide but I'm thinking about a spec bump to the 9020 - My question is how feasible would it be to just purchase the 9020 motherboard and a i7 4790 off eBay and just reuse the 9010 case or are they just too different?

Look at the Dell manuals for each version and see what is different. One of the main things to consider is that the 24 pin motherboard power connector on the 9010s was changed to an 8 pin connector on the 9020s.

Here's the 9010 in the first pic and the 9020 in the second.

I've also noticed that the Optiplex 9010 temperature sensors don't seem to work on 9020 motherboards. Not sure why. One way around that is to use a fan controller app on a 9020 to control the fan speeds. Otherwise the CPU fan will spin at over 4000 RPM continuously.

The chassis is exactly the same so that should create no problems for installing the mATX motherboard. The older 9010 MT case also had two front USB 3.0 ports so I think that should be no problem either.

Thank you for your reply!

Part of the motivation is to get Big Sur support, as the 9010 is stuck on Catalina.

I would be using an upgraded PSU so I would need the 24 -> 8 pin adapter anyway. Broken temperature sensors would be annoying though, I'll poke around and see if I can purchase then separately.

Truth is, once I price out the components, I might be within $50 of a new box anyway. And it might include a spare HDD too

Yes, I've looked at used i7-4790 prices on Ebay and most are over $110 currently. Gamers use these CPUs often so there is still a lot of demand, even though they are from 2014.

Strange thing. I've never found a 7020 or 9020 MT temperature sensor for sale on Ebay or anywhere else on the net. There are many 7010/9010 versions for sale but never the ones that come with a 7020/9020 MT. If you locate a source for them, post it here.
