her friend told her they were going to make the new Airs in purple.
That's the Apple marketing at work. They want to get the youngsters into their eco-system so that they are lifelong Apple customers. That's why we've now also got a purple iPhone option too. Bright colors are what get people to buy stuff. Basic psychology at work. Look at how much money is made by selling RGB lighting these days.

I haven't been a "youngster" in a very long time. Lol. But I see no problem with putting a bit of color in to these devices. It's fun and can liven things up. There's no reason why tech needs to be boring.

That being said, I've seen way too much tacky and overdone LED lighting in PCs.

If the upcoming 30" M1X iMac looks exactly like the 24" M1 versions, with the same colors, will you buy one ? Before I would buy one, I'd need to see it in an Apple or Best Buy store before pulling out and swiping the plastic card. Pictures on the internet can be deceiving.

I kinda like the blue and purple iMacs. Of course, there's always the silver which is most neutral... But, honestly, I think the blue or purple would liven up the room.

Edit:
Btw, I don't have any LED lighting for any of my computers other than for power and disk activity.

Also, many years ago, I had a B&W Power Mac G3 and still feel it was a great looking computer. I've always felt the old El Capitan cases were the best Power Mac cases. My mom also had a Bondi Blue iMac.

Colour changing bezels and backs - where the big money is.

The backs of the iMacs are sure to become canvases and the shapes lend themselves well to vinyl coverings and for those who really do love them and have too much money some really expensive customisations. Made a google alert for "Top 10 things to do with your iMac back".

This is an entire industry for Macbooks, Macbook Pros and many other laptops by Dell, HP and Lenovo.

Skins make sense if you want to keep the surface looking good and scratch free for resale purposes. For an iMac that sits in one place, I'd just leave it as is. I see 10 year old + Aluminum iMacs regularly that almost look like new. You won't even be seeing the back of a new 2021 iMac much anyway. The back of the monitor generally faces against a wall.

Let's look back a little and it was precisely those colourful CRT iMacs that turned Apple around.

This new coloured range gives me the impression Apple is actually making a serious play for the desktop market again, rather than just coasting along on the halo-effect of iPhone.

Perhaps they really think they have a game-changer in Apple Silicon Macs and are going to run with it?

I kind of miss the old Beige Box Macs. Simple, clean and elegant. Definitely not a work of art but still aesthetically appealing. Compare it to some of the older Lenovo black box towers.

Maybe when they were planning the design refresh of the iMacs, sitting around asking "What would Steve (or maybe even Jony) do ?" Someone came up with: "How about bring back the old G3 iMacs but in an elegantly slim new chassis with bolder colors." This is exactly what Steve told Tim Cook not to do before he passed on. He said, "Don't sit around asking each other what would Steve do in this situation." It's documented in the book Jobs, by Walter Isaacson.

It seems that their main objective was to make it look completely different than anything else available in the PC desktop market today. They want you to look at it and within a few seconds, be able to tell it's an iMac and not some other PC all in one that tends to look like everything else. I think they have certainly succeeded at doing this with the 24" 2021 iMac.

I still have a B&W G3 with a Korg Oasys PCI card + accompanying blue 20" monitor(a behemoth waiting 20 kg). I thought it looked nice, back then. I didn't like the beige quadra 950 I had once. Just as plain as a normal 80ties PC. The Motorola en PowerComputing clones I had looked awful too.
Design made Apple a big company, people prefer nice looking stuff, even if it's technically inferior or really expensive.
