Can you fit an extended atx board in a 2010 Mac Pro case and still use the normal IO shield and PCIE expansion slots?

No, I've never seen it done before. Most people opt for a mATX board instead of standard ATX because the mATX fits much better. eATX would be an even more difficult challenge. Not impossible, but probably not the best choice.

Ah ok, thank you.

I have done that but in a PowerMac G5 case. In the Mac Pro you would probably have to discard the disk holders and palce your disks somewhere else.

Here is a picture to show how small the case can look with a big MB

I have a totally uncut case so had to place the MB accordingly.
It was a lot of planing end testing different placements before the final layout.
I am very pleased with it! 24 cores 48 threads 128 GB memory

Do you have any reccomendations for a dual socket mATX board

I don't think anyone manufactures a dual socket mATX board. Have you seen any ? There were a few you could buy back in the mid 2000s but none I've seen in more recent iterations. The core counts for CPUs has gone way up recently negating the need for more than one CPU socket.

Intel based Mac Pro cases won’t fit ATX and larger boards unless you modify the upper rack which holds the PSU and optic drives, or remove the lower rack which supports the CPU cooling tunnel. Either way, the back panel needs cut to accommodate the extra PCIE slots.

If the mod can fit ATX, then EATX should also fit as there is enough space inside the case.

I haven’t seen an elegant solution yet, but would be interested to learn.

That's a really nice fit. What MB and CPU are in?
I have a 3.1 case, I think (at least says on the case) it has only one big rear circular air grid. I was thinking a ATX mb... just to get some one or more slots than the miniATX. But as I read maybe I need to look for a G5 case?

Not so importante, but if I could use the original SATA caddies it would be awesome!

I prefer not cutting anything on the case, but seems that then I have to re-rout the IOs. Any PCIe card will have to open the case (that very neat and easy) and connect ex: monitor.
I was looking to find examples of anyone that didn't cut the case to check the approach ^_^ used.

...anyway, great machine ;-)

Hi,

ATX can be done with full mod, depends what you want the finished product to look like, stock look then no.

I managed to fit a ATX in my 2008 MacPro 2.1 with DVD & Power shelf still in, just removed lower HDD tray.
Yes its messy inside but it works. on full tilt CPU & GPU never over 55c & silent
Both Top & Bottom chambers do not mix air, they are both sealed to increase cooling.
PSU fits nicely in original case (drawing air from front bays to exhaust at rear)
Laser Hive full rear Intel Plate Modded to suit my application, no rear bottom curve.

Its still a work in progress.

Still need to do;
- Front IO Panel - 3D Printing Holder
- CPU AIO Radiator 280mm & Seal - 3D Printed (just got foam there at the moment)

Rough pictures, only showing whats possible & externally clean.

Case: Apple MacPro 2.1
Case Plates: Laser Hive Mac Pro ATX kit with PSU mount, Pressed Mesh Fan Grill
Motherboard: ASUS Pro WS X570-ACE
Processor: AMD Ryzen™ 9 5950X
Processor Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62 280mm
Storage: Samsung NVME 980 Pro 1TB
Optical: DVD-R (Top bay) - Bluray-R (Bottom bay)
RAM: G.Skill DDR4 3600 CL18 (16GBx4)
Graphics Card: PNY GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 12GB XLR8
WiFi/Bluetooth: ASUS PCE-AX58BT AX3000 - Bluetooth 5.0 PCI-E
Power Supply: Seasonic Prime PX-1300
Fans: 4x 140mm NZXT Aer RGB 2 Push Pull (for AIO CPU), 1x 120mm NZXT Aer RGB 2 Exhaust FAN (for CASE)
