Stork's Thunderball II Build: ASUS ProArt Z490 Creator (Thunderbolt 3) - i5-10400 - RX 580

Couldn't make the iGPU to display output, got a GT 710. I managed to install the OS, but Thunderbolt shows "No drivers are loaded".

This is normal, unless you have a real Mac or if you flash the firmware of the Titan ridge chip (not recommended).

I had a look at you config and didn't see anything particularly out of place, which version of OC are you using? Because it seems like an older version. I ran the config through the sanity check and got some minor errors but nothing that should stop it booting from the iGPU. Since I have a dedicated GPU it's not easy to test but I will get around to testing iGPU only at some point.

Edit: Were you using the HDMI output on the motherboard? Some people are having issues with the HDMI output so check it with the displayport connection to rule that out

Is it worth it to get the 10850K + Z490 ProArt Creator for ~800 USD?

I'm not in a hurry for a new audio build, am just wondering if this is a good time
-considering 11th gen pushing the 10th gen inlet prices down
-the next Apple M1 might take over the world
-GPU shortage which means i'll have to sit around with an empty shell, etc.

@meowmers, I would think so. But, the Creator is expensive if you don't need Thunderbolt 3. If you don't need TB3, then save $100 and get a good non TB motherboard.

I'll need it for my UAD Apollo ;)

The Vision D is hard to find in my country.
Where are you @meowmers ?

I know it may not be an even distribution, but from this part of the world, online ordering is quite open & accessible (ebay, amazon.com, even newegg).
Having worked with both Gigabyte Designare and Z490 ProArt, the Vision D seems like a cleaner solution, with a much larger user base (i.e community support).

Then go for the Asus ProArt Z490 Creator. I can recommend it. I have the TB3 connected to a One World Computing (OWC) TB3 dock. I have a TB3 external NVMe drive and a Firewire audio interface to the dock. Works as expected.

If you are only using MacOS and the current M1 offerings are within your hardware requirements then I'd say an M1 is a lot more "worth it". There are some great threads discussing this at length on the forum.

Depends which way you look at it, if you are set on building a hackintosh then I'd do it sooner rather than later while 10th gen parts are still readily available. I have my doubts that we'll see an 11th gen intel core mac in the future but that is just me speculating.

It's important to note that you can't run Mojave on this board or any other Z490 board so you'll be saying goodbye to any 32-bit audio plugins you're using. Edit: Apparently there are ways of doing this now but I can't comment on how successful it is.

I'm currently using two TB3 Apollos and a UAD DSP PCIe card in the second PCIe1x slot. and its running like an absolute dream.

I updated to OpenCore 0.6.8 from 0.6.7. Thanks to @CaseySJ and @miliuco's thread, here are the steps to upgrade from 0.6.7.

:ch: As per the OpenCore Update Guide, mount your macOS installation drive's EFI partition. Copy the EFI partition's EFI folder to the Desktop. Unmount the drive's EFI partition.

:ch: Get a USB thumb drive from which we'll boot our new 0.6.8 configuration before installing it in our macOS drive's EFI partition.
:ch: For a new USB thumb drive, format it with the macOS Disk Utility as Format: MacOS Extended (Journaled) and Scheme: GUID.
:ch: For an existing formatted USB thumb drive, mount the EFI partition, remove its contents to the trash and empty the trash.

:ch: Mount the USB thumb drive's EFI partition. (Remove any EFI folder from the thumb drive if one is present.) Copy the installation drive's EFI folder from the Desktop to the USB's EFI partition.

:ch: Download the OC 0.6.8 package file here.

:ch: Now, update the EFI folder as per the OpenCore Update Guide's Step 3. After doing that, don't reboot yet.

:ch: Update all your kexts in the EFI/OC/Kexts folder.

:ch: Replace the thumb drive's EFI/OC/Resources/ folder with @CaseySJ's Resources folder which I've attached to this post. (It contains new required images.)

:ch: For our Creator, we need to add a new AppleInput section in UEFI of our config.plist file. We have to add the key values in the AppleInput section:
:ch: AppleEvent --> Builtin
:ch: KeySubsequentDelay --> 5
:ch: PointerSpeedMul --> 1
XML:
    <key>UEFI</key>
    <dict>
        <key>APFS</key>
        <dict>
            <key>EnableJumpstart</key>
            <true/>
            <key>GlobalConnect</key>
            <false/>
            <key>HideVerbose</key>
            <true/>
            <key>JumpstartHotPlug</key>
            <false/>
            <key>MinDate</key>
            <integer>0</integer>
            <key>MinVersion</key>
            <integer>0</integer>
        </dict>
        <key>AppleInput</key>
        <dict>
            <key>AppleEvent</key>
            <string>Builtin</string>
            <key>CustomDelays</key>
            <string>Auto</string>
            <key>KeyInitialDelay</key>
            <integer>0</integer>
            <key>KeySubsequentDelay</key>
            <integer>5</integer>
            <key>PointerSpeedDiv</key>
            <integer>1</integer>
            <key>PointerSpeedMul</key>
            <integer>1</integer>
        </dict>
NOTE: These changes are necessary so the mouse and keyboard will behave as you would expect in OpenCanopy.

:ch: Then set Misc -> Security -> AllowSetDefault = 1 so as to allow "cntrl + enter' in the picker to make selected boot option the default.
:ch: Lastly, delete the following items:
:ch: AppleEvent needs to be removed from UEFI --> ProtocolOverrides
:ch: KeyInitialDelay needs to be removed from UEFI --> Input
:ch: KeySubsequentDelay needs to be removed from UEFI --> Input

:ch: Save your config.plist file, and reboot to your macOS disk using the USB thumb drive. (I had to select the thumb drive as the boot disk in the BIOS. Then, resetting the NVRAM, after which I booted successfully into my macOS installation.

:ch: If you booted successfully into your macOS installation, then mount the USB thumb drive's EFI partition. Copy the USB thumb drive's EFI folder to the Desktop. Unmount the USB thumb drive's EFI partition.

:ch: Mount your installation drive's EFI partition. Rename it's EFI folder to something like "EFI-067" and zip it. Copy the EFI folder from the Desktop to your installation drive's EFI partition.

:ch: Now reboot into your installation drive. Be sure to change the boot drive in your BIOS to your installation drive from the USB thumb drive.

Done! :clap:

Special thanks to @CaseySJ for the information to update the Creator.

I updated to OpenCore 0.6.8 from 0.6.7
Thanks, I successfully updated a few days ago by simply using OCConfigCompare and updating my Resources folder from the OpenCore Github. Gonna look into this custom resources folder and see what I'm missing. Mouse and keyboard working fine in OpenCanopy Picker.
