Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

Good idea. At the moment I select reverting to a previous restore point and hopefully Windows will eventually reboot. Guess I would use @BIOS to do that? Any recommendations for a stable BIOS. I think I was running F5 something. Thanks Canyondust.
Your bios has been unstable at stock settings?

Well reverting to a previous restore point may not have been not a good idea. So the machine is booted into Windows (I hear a chime when I click the mouse), but I cannot get to Windows via Remote Desktop. Maybe it has not finished with the restore. Will wait until tomorrow to see if Remote Desktop works, otherwise I guess I'll have to try to restore BIOS via the USB port and a flash drive. Oh well.

I think I've only updated my BIOS once to F5. I haven't touched it since. Today is the first time that I've not seen the splash screen when booting and have not been able to get to BIOS with the DEL key upon boot.

I can’t say what the preferred BIOS is right now for vision D, maybe some others can chime in on that... but this same kind of thing happened on a friends z390 Designare and enabling CSM solved the problem for them...

1. Took out the battery to make sure it was ok. It was over 3V
2. Reinserted the battery. Now it appears Windows no longer boots.
3. Downloaded F5 bios file. Uncompressed to a directory. Assumed the file in that directory named Z490VISIOND.F5 is the correct BIOS file. Put it on a Flash Drive that says it is USB 2.0 compatible and renamed it GIGABYTE.bin.
4. Turned the machine on. Inserted the Flash Drive in the USB port labeled BIOSUSB. First on on left at top of back panel.
5. Pressed the Q-FLASH button. Nothing appears to be happening. The Q-FLASH button isn't blinking and I don't see any blinking lights on the back panel.

Has anyone done this before? If so, am I doing it correctly?

Looks like it may be RMA time or buy a new board.

Do you mean enabling CSM in the BIOS (which I cannot get to) or some other trick?

Thanks Canyondust

@RandC,

Some questions about the situation when the problem initially occurred:
  • Are you booting Windows and macOS through OpenCore Picker?
  • But Windows is currently the default startup volume, hence OpenCore launches Windows automatically?
Questions / suggestions about current situation:
  • There are 4 red LEDs on the bottom right of the motherboard that indicate problem with CPU, GPU, and RAM. The 4th one turns off when a boot loader successfully initializes. There is also a 2-digit POST code LED on the top right.
    • Which of the 4 tiny LEDs remains red when you power up the machine?
    • What is the final 2-digit POST code (ignore the numbers when they're changing rapidly)?
  • If you have multiple monitors, connect only 1 monitor to the AMD GPU. Physically disconnect all other video cables.
  • Also check that all DIMMs, PCIe cards, and power/data cables are securely connected.
  • To be sure, physically remove and reinstall the GPU. Remember to flip back the plastic retention lever behind the PCIe slot before removing the GPU.

Hey Casey,

All great ideas. I’m a bit ahead of you so didn’t get to see lights. I removed my GPU completely and then thought well lets try rebooting. I got the BIOS flash screen and I reconfigured based on the instructions in post #1 and now see OpenBoot options. Still working on getting Mac OS X to boot. Checked CFGLOCK and it was locked so turned it off according to instructions in #1. Rebooted again and checked and it is still off. Reset NVRAM but so far am having trouble booting Mac OS X. Windows doesn’t boot either. So now need to figure out why I’m not getting anything to boot. At least I can get to BIOS now.

Thanks

Rand

Windows Boots if I “Load Optimized Defaults” -> Save and Exit, so I must have something wrong in the BIOS setting. Casey, are the BIOS settings in post #1 still correct for latest next to last release or latest release of OC?

Thanks

Yes, BIOS settings are still correct for both Windows and macOS.
  • Does OpenCore Picker appear every time now?
  • Is the AMD GPU still disconnected?
  • If so, are you using HDMI port on the rear IO panel?
    • If so, then video will turn off when macOS boots because iGPU is configured in headless mode.
    • To use iGPU with macOS, you'll need to use config-Intel-iGPU.plist and transfer your serial numbers into that file. Then rename it to config.plist.
