Random reboots, Vega 64

• When I first built my hack, it worked great.
• A few months ago I had occasional crashes, but only when doing CG/rendering, where my Sapphire Vega 64 fan would spin to 100% for 10-20 seconds while my computer auto-rebooted.
• Last week I upgraded to Catalina and now it's crashing every hour or two, even when my computer is idle.

I have many .gpurestart files in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/, and some .spin files to go with them.

The only thing I've found that stops the crashes is unplugging my TV (HDMI cable) from the card.

I've updated the VBIOS, and my motherboard BIOS is up-to-date. I have a new 850W Seasonic Platinum PSU and have both 8pin power cables setup correctly (not daisy-chained). Temps seem fine.

Lastly, I ran Windows on the machine for a day without issues. So I think it's macOS specific.

Any other ideas? A bit desperate as graphics cards are insanely priced right now. TIA.

I have a new 850W Seasonic Platinum PSU and have both 8pin power cables setup correctly (not daisy-chained). Temps seem fine.

Do you have the 2 8pin cables connected to different rails on your PSU? If not it's a long shot but it may be worth a try. that's how I fixed my Sapphire Vega 64 from randomly turning off out of the blue, even when idle.

I had an issue with static electricity causing a GPU crash. black screen, full fan, had to reboot. My issue wasn't related to GPU load generally, but if you are in a static-y environment, it seems these Vegas are particularly sensitive to it.

Thanks for the response. I don't have the 2 8pin cables daisy-chained. I'm not 100% what you mean by "rails" though? But yes they're plugged into their own slots in the PSU. I wouldn't have cut corners there, and I peaked at the GPU today and it definitely looked like two separate cables, as each cable had their "daisy chain extra connector" unused.

Thanks for responding. I'm getting crashes every 1-2 hours. My case should be preventing static charges, right?

I overwrote my Mojave backup when I got iMessages working on Catalina — figured that would be the last problem I'd have

I looked back through my crash logs and wasn't really having crashes with Mojave like this.

I have Catalina because unfortunately my Reminders were upgraded in iCloud and they are no longer compatible with Mojave.

Is it worth my time to try flashing an older VBIOS?

I was just wonder if there was something specific to your current Catalina installation that may be causing the crashes...

What do your current crash logs show?

I don't know what's the cause of your crashes... I just see that WindowServer is crashing...

Ok. To confirm, the .gpurestart file infers that the graphics card is what's failing, right? Even if the cause is software-related.
