[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Hello Casey and all,
...
With that in mind, does any one have success with installing an unsupported GPU in slot 1 for windows, yet use the Hackintosh in headless mode? I realize that I'd lose my GPU acceleration (how I wish Apple and Nvidia would make up and play nice!). I have access to a Vega 56 that I could use from my older Hack (i7 4790k machine) if needed, though I'd like to keep it in my older system.
...

Update: I think I figured out how to boot into my Hackintosh in headless mode/using the iGPU. I removed the GPU from the computer, made a copy of my config file, updated it to match the "config-internal-GPU.plist" from "Mini-Guide for Fresh Installation of Catalina 10.15.1 and Newer" files since those were the files I originally used (and am still on).
I was not able to use the HDMI port on the motherboard to display video on my Hackintosh (though it works in the BIOS), but using Thunderbolt to DP adaptors work fine in Hackintosh.
Now to install the 3090 and see what happens on the Hackintosh side. Will be looking into how to disable Slot 1 soon. Wish me luck!
Hello @FlyinBurritoMan,

Unfortunately it's an all-or-nothing proposition with unsupported GPUs. As you pointed out, GPUs serve two purposes:
  • Driving a display monitor via HDMI, DisplayPort, and other connectors.
  • Providing immense "compute" power for specific classes of functions.
This is why the iGPU on Intel processors can be placed in either of two modes:
  • Headless mode: iGPU provides compute power to specific applications, but does not drive a display monitor.
  • Non-headless mode: iGPU provides both compute power and ability to drive a display monitor.
So the question you are asking is whether we can do the same with unsupported GPUs. Unfortunately the answer is no. With an unsupported GPU, the only options we have are these:
  • Disable the GPU entirely via an SSDT (this completely hides the GPU from macOS).
  • Use the GPU to drive a display monitor over HDMI, DisplayPort, etc. but without display acceleration. This means windows will move slowly, windows will scroll even more slowly, etc. Everything that appears on screen will appear and move very slowly.

Hello Mister Casey !!
Do you have DGPU sensors (Radeon 5700 in particular) with iStatistica Pro ?
Good question. Alas there are no GPU sensors (at this time). HWMonitorSMC2, however, does display GPU sensors.

So first of all, thanks again for all your work and help. I’ve tried all 3 guides to get to Catalina, I’m not sure which version of Catalina I archived so I tried both version guides for fresh install, and the Mojave to Catalina Upgrade. The Upgrade never produced video so maybe I messed up. Both the Fresh installs just hang on Install macOS. The mouse works and I can connect to WFi and reboot but once I click Install nothing happens. I’ve waited 20 minutes and nothing. I’m using BIOS F9j and skipped the micro guide since I verified the setting was disabled in BIOS. Would really appreciate any help. Thanks again.

Hello @swizzley, please follow this OpenCore-based guide for fresh installation of Catalina:

Do not use BIOS F9j as mentioned at the top of Post 1. Instead, use BIOS F9g or F9i (links are in the post above).

Please double check all steps and remove Nvidia GPU from the system when installing macOS.

@CaseySJ I quickly built a Catalina VM and forced/set the resolution to 1920x480 via the .VMX file. Here's what iStatistica Pro looks like fullscreen in landscape mode:

Now I really can't wait for the display to arrive. This is going to look awesome!
Hi JJ
looking at this work it makes me want to create a new build. Unfortunately z490 vision D it is nowhere to be found :(

curious if anyone has documented a fresh clean install process for Big Sur?

@CaseySJ After reading through the other thread regarding your Z490 Vision D build, I'm curious if you think it's a worthwhile upgrade from a Z390 Designare hackintosh? Thanks in advance.

With Z590 already shipping and Rocket Lake coming in just over a month, I don’t think users — who already have a recent build — should be thinking of Z490. In fact they should not even be thinking of Z590! The real advancement from Intel is coming later this year with Alder Lake and Z690. Whether that processor or platform will work with macOS is unknown at this time.

The other thing to consider is a new Apple Silicon Mac. I’m still eagerly waiting for more information about the rumored small form factor Mac Pro.

Someone who does not already have a recent build, however, would be advised to consider the Z490 and even Z590. Everyone else should (and this is just my opinion) wait to see how 2021 unfolds. It promises to be an exceptional year.

Hi Casey,
For a first build (for a friend of mine), would you recommend a Z390, z490 or Z590?
