Some comments and questions:

• So it seems Sleep has been turned off in System Preferences --> Energy Saver.
• But after 5-6 minutes of idle time, the system crashes?
• Does this happen every time the system is left idle for a few minutes or only sometimes?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, correct, and it happens every time, 100% predictable. The duration varies, usually between 6-20 minutes.
Maybe interesting: I just run a 13 minutes YouTube video inside Firefox, without touching the mouse/pc, and it didn’t crash.

• Because you've migrated from Mojave to Catalina to Big Sur it is possible that some legacy application is not behaving properly.
  • Please run Activity Monitor and leave the window alone for 5-6 minutes.
  • If the system crashes, take a photo of the Activity Monitor window, remove EXIF location information from the photo, resize it down to 1MB or less, and post.

So I upgraded to Big Sur 11.2 last week without issues. I just upgraded OC to .66 version, and I started to poke around to make sure everything was working. I found this difference with the USB4 reference. When did that change? I'm sure it's been there and I just didn't notice.

Yes that cute little change has been there for a while (Big Sur only).

Hi @CaseySJ, thanks for the alternative command. I was able to get to the point of validating all kext were removed, creating a USB, and using HackingDROM to create a new config.plist from my Clover EFI. However, I cannot boot from the USB. I believe everything is set-up right, but when I select the USB, I just get the splash screen and the boot menu comes right back. Not sure what I am missing. I tried creating my USB stick install again and got the same results.

You have come to the right place. Whether we can fix the problem or not is another matter!


Okay let's proceed like this:

• First of all, flashing the controller is not necessary. If those devices were working under Mojave then they should also work under Big Sur. There are some exceptions, however, such as Apple's Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit adapter because it uses an Ethernet controller that is no longer supported.
• Perform a CMOS Reset. Then configure all BIOS parameters starting always with F7 (Load Optimized Defaults). Make sure that:
  • BIOS Setup --> Boot --> CFG-Lock is disabled
  • BIOS Setup --> Thunderbolt --> GPIO3 Force Pwr is enabled
  • BIOS Setup --> Thunderbolt --> Thunderbolt Security is No security
• Then check Thunderbolt devices once again.
  • If they don't work, download and run IORegistryExplorer and select File --> Save As... to save the IOReg file. Post that file.
• Also list the makes/models of all Thunderbolt devices you are trying to connect.

I just received my brand new Lacie 4To Mobile Drive with TB3 support over USB-C.

I bought a brand new (and expensive) TB3 cable but still no luck with my TB.

So here is my IOReg.

I am on F9i with the recommended BIOS settings - OC 0.6.6 and Big Sur 11.2.

Not sure but seems like when you leave your pc alone Photos.app starts analyzing people faces and it froze for some reason
Please try changing iMac19,1 to iMacPro1,1 and do the test again


When it froze and you make a hard restart, after you login back to macOS there's not a crash log screen ?

The other reason could be Spotlight indexation

As Casey said a fresh install can solve the issue

The culprit appears to be Photos app (background image analysis). Surprised that it’s happening in 11.1, but we found another Photos problem in 11.1 that was fixed in 11.2.

First try upgrading to 11.2. If problem persists we can provide next steps.
