[Success] AMD RX6000 Series working in macOS

So I'm guessing im gonna need big surr if I want to update from my 5700xt liquid devil. It's a shame, big Sur is very problematic still for audio production.

I also think my most recent build will be my last hackintosh.. M1 plus lack of GPU options won't make it viable.. 10 + years of hackintoshs isn't a bad run :)
It's been a good run indeed! But Apple's M-series obviated the need for a hackintosh overnite for most people (except those that need a ton of cores or use windows/linux on one machine) which probably means Apple was listening to the community. M-series is too powerful and too power efficient to ignore.

I don't know if Intel will be able to catch up with Apple or even AMD, but until they do, your money is better spent elsewhere, unfortunately. But I sincerely hope Intel comes back and that x86 doesn't die. I would be very sad indeed.

But I'm looking forward to picking up a new M-series macbook pro 14 or 16 inch depending on the price. Rumors have it that Apple will release a new design probably in 3Q 2021.
 
Man, I want these drivers so bad. I managed to snatch a 6800XT from a retailer at launch and a 5950X from Ebay. Both at MSRP. I know, crazy!

Currently typing on said computer, trying to ignore how it's running at 10 fps and at this point there is no real solution for me either because I have it all hooked up in a custom waterloop. Man I feel stupid now assuming it would be quicker..

For the discussion of this being our last Hackintosh. I don't know.. For us who also want to be able to game at 160fps, there is still no solution except going down the Hackintosh route. This comes from someone who first tried Macbook Pro + e-gpu but the constant stuttering and frame-drops made it impossible to play any fast-paced competitive games. And this doesn't even bring up the incompatability issues of running x86-based games on ARM.

Regarding M1: I bought the M1 Macbook Air(returned) just to see how it compared; completely mind-blown! How a passive-cooled 8-core, 15watt laptop out-performs a 16-core desktop 115watt cpu, wtf? It almost feels like alien technology at this point.

Make dual-boot dont struggle with driverless hack. Mac w/ WSL or Manjaro linux would do job for non-windows environment.

Personally I can't return my M1 , its too good to use.

Ok, 10fps was an exaggeration. It isn't that bad. :)

To be honest; I am pretty surprised how well it works. Xcode / Simulator works smoothy, video
playback ala Youtube, Netflix, also etc works well. I guess I have my x5950 to thanks for that.

I know what do you mean, I've got installed big sur with my rx6800xt but on 144hz monitor its really annoying to use it. I'm not sure if it works so good for me on graphic side.

Your setup looks pretty good! Very compact one, nice job!
 
I've been running two GPUs - 6800 in slot 1, Vega 64 in slot 3 - for the last month and it's working fine. In macOS I use an SSDT to disable the 6800, and in Windows I use "Disable Driver" to disable the Vega 64.

I did briefly try running Windows with the Vega 64 enabled, but I started getting lower frame rates and jerky action in the game I was playing. Not 100% certain it was connected to enabling the Vega 64, but I disabled it again to be sure. I haven't connected that extra power cable for running two GPUs, which I guess I should if I plan to have them both enabled. I did wonder whether maybe the 6800 wasn't able to draw as much power with the Vega 64 enabled and that caused it to run slower, though I'm not sure if it works like that; I'd have expected a crash or blue screen if I had power issues, not lower performance.

I also run DaVinci Resolve and saw that Puget review and it was quite disappointing. However, as you mention, I took solace in the fact that they tested on Windows using OpenCL. Windows Resolve doesn't use AMD's Vulkan, and OpenCL is known to be much weaker than NVidia's CUDA.

I believe macOS' metal is regarded as a pretty capable and powerful compute API; potentially a rival to CUDA, albeit much newer. Therefore my hope is that Metal + AMD will be much more competitive compared to CUDA + NVidia than OpenCL + AMD is.

When the 6000 series GPUs are supported in macOS I plan to do a benchmark test, comparing Resolve in Windows using OpenCL vs Resolve in macOS using Metal. My hope is that I see noticeably better performance in macOS. I don't have an NVidia GPU to compare against, but if macOS Metal does outperform Windows OpenCL then that would be some indication that that Puget comparison benchmark isn't applicable to video editing on macOS.

Regardless of API, once fully supported in macOS I'm sure 6000 series GPU will outperform a Radeon VII.
How did you manage to make the SSDT work? I followed the Dortania Guide and simply nothing happens. I have a configuration almost the same as yours, but my MB is from Asus. For now I can't use my RX 6900 because it doesn't boot.
 
Big Sur 11.2 (20D53) is out guys!
 
Guys... there's not going to be functionality changes between a beta and a RC. New features are introduced in betas, RC's are to validate them and make sure they are bug free.

Maybe 11.3 beta1 will include it but there's nothing unexpected here.
