Hi,

Had Mavericks and Win7 on separate drives. Updated Win7 to 10 with no issue, and installed a 2070super graphics card for better gaming. Intended on using integrated graphics for OSX however surprisingly 2070 worked with no issue. A week into this setup Win10 started taking over boot before the bootloader could allow me to choose which drive. USB keyboard wouldn't power up until Win had booted so couldn't get into BIOS to make adjustments. When I did all settings seemed correct from before. Subsequently when I did manage to get OSX selected I would sit with the Apple screen endlessly with no successful boot.

Now looking to build out separate gaming pc and revert to all original working hardware and Mavericks, as it was a perfect system for my needs.

Any suggestions on easiest way to go about this are appreciated. Would like to save photos/data from OSX side first if possible.

Appreciate any help and have learned a lot from this site and its users!

Best.

Pull out or disable Windows drive. Do not format your macOS drive. Now reinstall Maverick over your current macOS. Your existing data should be intact and Maverick will work again.

Never allow Windows to upgrade or update as it can overwrite other OS bootable partitions. If you want to use Windows... disable other drives in BIOS before using Windows or get hotswapable drive bay which you swap in/out macOS or Windows drives. I hate Windows as it doesn't give you options to select which drive should be bootable. It just hijacks whatever it find one on any drives.

Thanks I've also found Win to be a bit of a nemesis.

On official Apple computers I've run through reinstallations plenty of times but it's been 6-7 years since I had my head sunk into this community.

In terms of multibeast and programming my machine to think it's the Powermac, etc. what steps should I take. Apologies for the simplicity just don't have the time these days to relearn what I used to know.

First quick questions that come to mind: will Win10 have messed up any BIOS settings, and just out of interest what could Win10 have done to the Mac side to have made it not want to boot?

Very appreciative of any and all help!
Best!

I won't be much help with Maverick since it's outdated. You will still need to use the same old version of MultiBeast for Maverick. Any attempts to use current version of MultiBeast or OpenCore may break your system.

There is no way for any OS to fiddle with BIOS settings but it can fiddle with the bootable partition.

Windows 10 updates may overwrite the boot sector of any connected drives and take over the boot process to boot itself, rendering other operating systems unbootable. It may also modify the partitions on the boot drives and other drives, which may destroy other partitions. I personally witnessed that when attempting to do a Windows 10 feature upgrade (e.g. 1809 -> 1909) in a VMware virtual machine, the upgrade process created a approximately 500 MB partition on the boot drive and resized the Windows partition. If it was done to other partitions imagine what that might do.

I am experimenting with dual booting Windows 8.1 / Windows 10 with MacOS Sierra / High Sierra / Mojave / Catalina on my second system. When I want to run Windows (or MacOS) I will first disable all other drives formatted to the other OS in the BIOS (I can do that because they are all SATA drives) and modify the boot order if necessary, and then the OS will boot successfully. It is troublesome to be sure but for me it is the safest way to dual boot Windows and MacOS.

Your current system is not able to fully realize the power of the RTX 2070 card. I would recommend you keep the current system for Mavericks (since you seem to have a need to run it) and build a new system to use the new RTX card to run Windows 10, if possible. That way you won't need to worry about dual booting and the possibility of Windows 10 messing up with the MacOS side.

Thanks for the help, folks. I unplugged win10 drive, was able to get to BIOS, got the same eternal spinning wheel under the apple logo.

Reading through a few things in the Mavericks install guide I went through a few BIOS settings recommended for install, found one that said to disable VT-d; I checked and that was enabled, I disabled it, and Mavericks booted up.

I guess I'll go with that for now. Surprisingly easy fix so far. Thanks for the advice on builds; my plan is to separate my win10 gaming build from my current mac for fewer complications.

Maybe not the place to discuss but I'm really only keeping Mavericks because it's been working... any suggestions on benefits to newer OS's?
