[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Can I ask an off topic opencore question/ Why does the disk name in the Picker GUI not match the Big Sur Disk Utility and finder name? I have been through all the OC docs and don't see a clear reason for this....
Thanks to @joevt we figured this out a short while back. Please see Quick Reference spoiler at the top of Post 1:

thanks!!! that fixed my opencore picker labels. I still have the issue with no updates from the mac app store working , it says update available but runs to about 75% and stops. So far no luck with google other than reinstall and be sure to select preboot for the final completion

Hi! Thanks for keeping the guide up to date.

Finally get the chance to upgrade my legacy Majove setup. Digging through the guide, my understanding is that I have to do the following:

1. upgrade from 10.14.6 to 10.15.4 with "Micro-Guide for Upgrading from Mojave to Catalina 10.15.4 and Newer"
2. upgrade from 10.15.4 to 11.0.x with "Mini-Guide: Upgrading to macOS 11.0.x Big Sur from macOS 10.15.x Catalina"

Does this sound right?

Question about step 1), the guide indicates using in-place upgrade but today it only provide upgrade to big sur. Can I upgrade directly or there is another reliable way to upgrade to Catalina?

Thanks! Happy New Year!

Hello @zeroliu,

Yes that's correct. Just made some minor updates to the first guide.

You can try the upgrade directly from Mojave to Big Sur, but please make a full bootable backup of Mojave first. You don't want to take chances here. One bad kext from Mojave can kill the upgrade. If you have various audio interface drivers (UAD, MOTU, SonarWorks, Presonus, etc.) it may be necessary to uninstall them first.

Yes, I was using the same computer. After a while (and system restart) I was able to download and install update. One thing I noticed after running Big Sur for a while is that the system wakes from sleep after some time and doesn't go back to sleep no matter how long you want. This wasn't an issue with Catalina + Clover in my case.
Are there any ideas why the issue with sleep/wake occurred? Has anyone faced similar problems after updating to Big Sur from Catalina? Or, perhaps, after switching from Clover to OpenCore?

Just successfully upgraded to Big Sur from Mojave. I can't believe how smooth it went. It was incredible, especially seeing how complicated it used to be to upgrade to Catalina. For a time, I thought I would never see Big Sur within the lifespan of my hackintosh.

Basically, I followed the instruction to enable native NVRAM and replaced clover with open core 0.6.4. Then, I just followed the system in-place upgrade. WOW.

A couple quick follow up questions:

1. OpenCore looks very promising. Does that mean future system upgrade is much safer and easier for hackintosh?
2. CCC seems to have some limitations in Big Sur. Is there anything that we should be careful about?

Thanks again!

Good job!

Yes I think so. OpenCore is the only boot loader compatible with Bug Sur. Clover integrates various components of OpenCore (related to kext injection and memory management, among others) for the same purpose, but OpenCore is leading the way.

I plan to create or modify a mini-guide soon to discuss use of Carbon Copy Cloner with Big Sur.

The latest version of Carbon Copy Cloner 5.1.25-b3 (build 6152) is working very well now. When setting up a new backup task, we can give CCC permission to erase the Destination Volume. It will perform incremental backups on that volume when the task is run again in the future.

If CCC behaves differently for you, just let me know.

My flashed V1 GC-Titan Ridge card seems to still be working ok with Catalina 10.15.7.
@CaseySJ I spoke too soon. It doesn’t appear to be working but I’m sure it was previously on 10.15.7.
Could it be Bios related?
I don’t think I had tried it since updating to F9i from F8.

We've noticed that flashed GC-Titan Ridge cards don't work properly with Thunderbolt devices that support "USB-C Alt Mode" connections. These alt mode devices are designed to operate with both Thunderbolt ports and USB-only ports (i.e. USB-C ports that only support USB protocol).

Please try a Thunderbolt-only device if you have one. For example, CalDigit and OWC Thunderbolt 3 docks are Thunderbolt-only devices and they should still work.

Hi, @CaseySJ, the BIOS update to F9i went just fine. Several reboots, everything worked. I decided to tackle the transition from Clover to OpenCore today. I followed this guide (0.6.3 mini-guide). Downloaded the .zip file, copied to the USB drive (freshly erased and reformatted per instructions), renamed the directory to "EFI". Used HackinDROM to upload my existing (Clover) config.plist from my boot EFI partition, selected the Z390 Designare OC 063 AMD GPU - CaseySJ option, downloaded the modified config.plist and copied it to the USB EFI partition in the OC directory.

On reboot, F12 then spacebar followed by double-clicking on Reset NVRAM. Rebooted again, F12, OC booted, selected my OSX boot disk and it froze at the apple screen with a progress bar that filled in maybe about 1/8". Let it sit for a long time, with no progress. Rebooted back in to OSX from Clover, modified the boot args in the OC config.plist to include "-v" and went through the boot process with OC again.

Here is where the system is hanging:

The OC troubleshooting guide suggests it's something to do with TSC. Before I go screwing around with stuff and making this worse, do you have any experience with this issue? Suggestions?
