[Success] AMD RX6000 Series working in macOS

Of course they will come out with new MPX modules for the new Mac Pro. Their current batch of cards are based around Radeon VII/5700XT and were underpowered a year ago relative to their nvidia counterparts. Mid way through this year Apple added the more "affordable" w5700x GPU as an option, and I have no doubt the Radeon 6000 series is coming soon. Sadly, "soon" may still be months away!

True dat!
We've seen this with Vega and Navi10, they are developing the AMD6000 kexts, it will take some time. The frame buffer.kext loads.

Uh sure it does, why not complete the work while you build out the new iMac? Sorry but there is no reason for them to upgrade unless they plan to use on in the new iMac or they want eGPU support for Apple Silicon. Not saying it's impossible, just have some doubt.
Why would they add frame buffers and other stuff related to the 6000 cards if they were not adding them. They want the Mac Pro 7,1 to be relevant for as long as possible the only real way for that to happen is to allow Video card upgrades. There was a hell of a lot of RND invested in that machine for them to just set it on the side. Especially if they really care about the pros like they said they do.

I don't know Apple's roadmap, but it's possible it's if they need a longer window on the iMac. My thoughts are they don't need it. They were shocked on the performance of the M1. I have the sense they can scale this much higher and will do so. I see no reason to upgrade the cards from here. I would be surprised as well if they iterate on the Intel Macs. Plus to answer why have framebufers, it seems a minor process, they have much much more to do to make the cards work and build/test drivers. I just don't see it.

That all said, I want it for my eGPU. If by chance they decide to support it, I'll grab one. This will be the final upgrade I expect in the Intel platform.

Let me say it another way, Frame buffers, and other stuff = Frame buffers, drivers, services. The drivers are likely being tested internally currently and will be released at some point in the near future. The only thing currently missing is the controller that is needed to more or less enable the drivers.

It does not matter if they release any further systems that will support the AMD cards. They want the Mac Pro 7,1 to have a longer life, a new GPU is the best way to do that. After all the hype of it being upgradeable, and all the RND to create the modular system they are not going to leave those Mac Pro users in the dark with old dated tech without an upgrade path.

No idea, but I like the thought of that. Let's hope, otherwise, it's ok too. Planning on Apple Silicon next year anyway.

I believe support is coming. IoRegistryExplorer shows that the OS loads some kexts for Big Navi...the system recognizes it is an AMD card. Also, the OS loads the appropriate kexts for the USB-C port, and an audio driver loads.

Meanwhile, I'm just running MacOS with an old 560, and gaming in windows with Big Navi. Also glad that the stock 6800XT has RGB that embeds on the cards firmware... Set whatever color scheme you want, and works in any OS.

Hi dehjomz.

Going to hijack this post really fast but seen you're running a 6800xt for Windows and a 560 for mac.

I'm in a similar situation, currently need to upgrade my gpu (purely for Windows as I only do audio work on hackintosh), but I can't find many people running a 6800xt on Windows and a separate one on hackintosh.

Do you have to cloak it on mac until it has drivers available? Wouldn't you be able to just use the igpu instead of the 560?

Can take this to dms if you're feeling charitable. Thanks a lot.

You can just use an SSDT to hide the slot the 6800 is in when you boot into macOS. If/when drivers become available for macOS then just delete the SSDT.

I’ve tried this method twice, but both times, macOS stalls before getting to the login screen. As soon as I remove the SSDT it boots normally again. I’m away from my computer for the next week or so, so I can’t post the log unfortunately, but I will as soon as i’m back.

I have my RX580 in slot 2, and an MSI RX6800 in slot 1.
