[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Thanks in advance @CaseySJ!

EDIT:
I have no eGPU device to test TB3, but I can see the devices connected (phone via USB, ethernet) on my elgato TB3 dock.

Again thank you for your work!
After booting into macOS, are you able to disconnect and reconnect the Elgato TB3 dock?

Yes! However Thunderbolt screen shows no drivers loaded. In my work MacBook Air it shows the ports and the dock there. I assume that is correct due to how things are handled in SSDT.

I haven't been able to connect my DP monitor though. It seems light up but it goes black again saying there's no connection.

Please try the following:
  1. Cold boot. This means shutting down the system and flipping power switch on PSU to off for 10 seconds. Then turn the system back on and check USB-C again.
  2. If that does not work, disable or remove the Thunderbolt SSDT and reboot. Check if the USB-C ports appear.
  3. Also double check Thunderbolt settings in BIOS.
Could there be a problem with the Thunderbolt firmware? I was flashing under MacPro 5.1.
What's over for the card, kexts efi drive?

That is normal. It will say No drivers are loaded until Thunderbolt Bus is activated, which is not necessary to do.

To get DP out of the Thunderbolt Dock it is necessary to switch Platform ID to 0x3E9B0007, which is not something I recommend due to various application crashes. Just use DP from the AMD GPU directly.

I didn't know you had flashed the GC-Titan Ridge. This should be mentioned at the beginning. Anyway, some questions:
  • Do you need Thunderbolt Bus? If so, what device requires it?
  • Does USB-C work properly with the original firmware?

Happy Holidays everyone! I've got a little bit of downtime over the holidays which has me wondering if I should scratch that tinkering itch and spend the time converting my super solid Clover Mojave system to an OpenCore system and possibly upgrade to Catalina. I've read through the OpenCore to Clover guides by @CaseySJ and it all seems doable. I'm just wondering if it's worth it to make the jump. Is OpenCore the way forward and will clover support eventually be phased out? Is OpenCore equally as stable as clover these days? My system has been incredibly stable which is why I hesitate to mess with it at all.

One or more of the kexts in the OpenCore folder might be compiled with libraries that do not work on High Sierra. A clean installation of Catalina is the better option because that avoids bringing a lot of “baggage” from High Sierra. That’s what I did when I jumped from my 2008 Mac Pro to the Z390 Designare in late 2018.

Migration Assistant should be avoided as well. It’s best to reinstall the apps and plugins, and to copy documents manually.

However, if it’s truly necessary to do an in-place upgrade, it would be best to stay on Clover, upgrade to Mojave, and then follow the Mojave-to-Catalina upgrade mini-guide.

Thanks a lot @CaseySJ ! Makes perfect sense. What would be the best way to download Mojave to do inlace upgrade? Should I just follow your main guide to have all the kexts and drivers in place? Should I log out from iCloud and deregister my current High Sierra and re-log back in Mojave or Catalina or both (deregister again in Mojave)?

I already have a fresh working install of Catalina ready, so I can always start moving apps at anytime. But really wanted to give it a last shot ...

Also my current High Sierra is on HFS, would it make sense to clone it to APFS format drive and perform the upgrades on the APFS file system? Or will Mojave auto magically convert HFS to APFS?

Thanks again for helping us!

Now I will return to the original firmware and throw off the screen

Let's first check whether the Thunderbolt Bus SSDT was activated properly:
  • Both SSDT-TbtOnPch... and SSDT-DTPG.aml should be activated in OpenCore's ACPI section.
  • Any previous Thunderbolt SSDT must be disabled.
  • We should then do a cold boot (shutdown the system and flip power switch on PSU to OFF for 10 seconds).
  • After logging into macOS, run IORegistryExplorer followed by File --> Save As... and post the IOReg file.

Thanks for the help.

Yes, both are active along with the Patch.

Here is the original firmware and your SSDT, USB-C still does not work
