[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

My Designare suddenly died :/
5 short beeps and no booting. Warranty service said it’s MB. As they do not have this MB anymore I feel they will try to offer me another model. Damn 2020... Second MB dies, (and two TVs) :(

That’s too high a failure rate. Do you use Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) that also provide surge protection and voltage regulation? Every computer system in my home is attached to a UPS because I cannot trust the power utility company (due to recent experience).

The first one wasn’t Designare, it was old Asus Z87A.
Yes, I’m using UPSs and pretty expensive PSUs.

They have in stock right now:

MSI Z390 MPG GAMING PRO CARBON AC

MSI Z390 MPG GAMING PRO CARBON

MSI Z390 MPG GAMING EDGE AC

GIGABYTE Z390 AORUS PRO

ASRock Z390 TAICHI

Which one do you recommend? I’ll be using this exact guide for installing MacOS. It’s a lifesaver.

Among those choices my recommendation is the Gigabyte Z390 AORUS Pro.

Wouldn't it be more expensive to get Z390 system over Z490 system? It probably depends on location, I guess. In my location, Z390 costs more than Z490 now. Sorry, I'm just curious.

CaseySJ got Gigabyte Z490 Vision D guide too, I believe.

EDIT: I didn't realise earlier that you might've had a later model of CPU, that would only work for Z390.

I hope everything will work fine, like nothing happened, when I boot that new MB from existing M2 disk with clover and Catalina.

You should expect some problems. USB port configuration will not be correct and sleep/wake may not work until a proper USB port configuration is created.

I see. You can certainly switch to Clover as follows:
  • First rename or backup the existing OpenCore EFI.
  • Then locate your Clover EFI folder and copy it to the EFI partition of a USB flash drive in order to do a test boot through Clover.
  • Because you are using Catalina, do not install any third-party kexts in /Library/Extensions folder.
  • Instead, just confirm that all necessary kexts are in the CLOVER/kexts folder.
  • Insert USB flash drive in the computer, boot the machine, and press F12 at BIOS splash screen to open the BIOS boot menu. Select the USB flash disk.
  • Now Clover Boot Menu should appear. Boot Catalina.
Hi @CaseySJ,

Just wanted to update regarding my boot issue. As a summary, my system will go blank after the boot process when the login screen is supposed to appear on cold boots (just shut down for a period of time, not with the PSU off). When I do a warm reboot, the login screen will appear.

Just for kicks, I typed in my password despite the screen being blank after a cold boot and it magically logs in! So for some reason during a cold boot, the login screen makes the display go blank but I can still enter my password and once logged in, the screen will reappear. So weird! Just thought I'd throw it out there in case anyone else is experiencing similar issues.
