[Success] AMD RX6000 Series working in macOS

Public Beta of the 11.1 RC1 has been released. I don't have Big Navi on hand to test (mine is in the mail). Can someone test and report back? Would seem that perhaps support might not come in this release but possibly in 11.2?

Meanwhile once mine shows up, I'm going to game... Cyberpunk has my name on it.
I beleive I saw somewhere (might be egpu.io) someone tried and found no driver.

No success, 11.1RC still shows my 6800 as a generic display adapter only.

Yes, the AMD kexts have not changed since beta 1 - at least the info.plist files have not. They added the framebuffers in beta 1, but it then looks like they decided not to do any further work on it during 11.1.

We'll have to hope they plan to complete the work in 11.2.

They will for 2 reasons :
- MacPro 7,1 upgradability
- Still intel macs in the pipeline (so they said at WWDC) and they (it) will very likely have RDNA2 in them (it).

That's a maybe, but I'd say it's possible. I'm hoping so as I'll bet any update will be the last for the Intel side and eGPU side as well.

Waiting for everything to catch up and I'm off to Apple Silicon land and will consider my 16 and hacks legacy.

Why release anything on the Intel platform given the dominance of m1?
If they do pursue intel for one more round, I’m guessing Alder Lake maybe? But even so, unless Alder Lake single core performance is off the charts and similar to m1, it seems futile to release an Intel based Mac at this point.

It does make sense if they don't yet have a powerful enough own-made GPU. On top of that Tim cook really said they have more intel macs to be released. Back in 2005 they were true to their word when they made the same statement : they pulled out the liquid cooled PowerMac G5 after revealing the intel transition.

Yeah they definitely will at some point - they already started the work. Just a question of whether it's 11.2 or not. I'm hopeful it will be.

They already released the Comet Lake based iMac. At this point, given the intense consumer interest in Apple Silicon, people may skip a new x86 based Mac. People are sick of hearing the fans spin up and the computer over heating or throttling under sustained load. This (overheating) doesn’t happen on current Apple Silicon and probably won’t on new iterations.

It’s a business risk to allocate capital to produce and release an intel based Mac now in this environment, unless it’s a screamer in terms of performance. Apple has said it will complete the transition by 2022, so people may wait for the Apple Silicon version.

I would love to see a new intel version, but I don’t have much confidence in Intel’s IPC performance until at least Alder Lake. But maybe rocket lake might surprise us.

Rather than pursuing x86, couldn’t Apple get AMD to write ARM drivers for its GPUs instead?

Apple does not trust Intel's IPC either but on the other hand they still need AMD's expertise for high end GPU's and those can only be paired with traditional x86 chips (as lack of support for eGPU's on M1 Macs suggests).
I guess Apple will only ask AMD to write ARM drivers if they can't be competitive enough on the GPU side, especially when the next MacPro gets to show itself.
