Hi,

I know I’m a little late to this thread but hopefully someone can still help me out.

I built a Hackintosh in 2017 using Gigabyte Z170 HD3 + i7 6700k that I use for music production, pro tools etc.

I am finally able to buy a UAD Apollo Twin X Duo and am aware that I will need thunderbolt to connect it to my computer which my board doesn’t have natively (I could buy an alpine ridge etc but would rather not).

my question is does Thunderbolt 3 work over the USB C port on the I/O of this board?

You mention using a TB2 - TB3 Adapter in your build. Is that because you are using an older generation Apollo that uses TB2 or is it because TB3 is not supported?

I just want to know for certain that if I buy this board and follow this guide that I will be able to use the new Apollo Twin X that utilises thunderbolt 3 over USB-C out of the box with minimal faffing around?

Any insight would be great.

Thanks,
Tim

You need a Thunderbolt port for the UAD Apollo Twin X Duo.

USB-C is not Thunderbolt. The Gigabyte Z170 HD3 does not have USB-C or Thunderbolt.

The Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter can be used to connect a Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt 1 device to a Thunderbolt 3 computer or a Thunderbolt 3 device to a Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt 1 computer.

sorry, I didn’t make it clear.

I am planning to switch my Z170 HD3 for the Z170 Designare.

So will my UAD Apollo Twin X work with this board over the USB-C/TB3 port on the I/O?

Hi everyone! I have pretty much the same setup (MoBo Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Designare, CPU Intel Core i7-6700K, I'm using integrated graphics though Intel HD 530 and I'm still on Sierra 10.12.3). I just bought an ultrawide Samsung monitor with resolution 3440x1440, and my Hack doesn't seem to have the appropriate resolution for my screen among the options it lets me choose. I'm not sure how I can fix this, I've read a few posts around but nothing seems to give a definitive answer. I usually use HDMI. Could anybody please advise on how to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Yes - as long as you first activate/"wake up" the TB3 ports via Windows first, and then they will work for your CustoMac....

There's a little free utility in the app store (Display Menu) that IMHO, is sort of a swiss-army knife for video resolution & refresh settings. You might want to install that & see if 3440x1440 appears in that menu as an option.
