how many illumination levels?
yeah I known and I am not bothered ;)... I was more making the point about building a laptop 'Hackintosh'.
You have to be realistic of the goal and the cost to get 'that' goal
1) fully 100% Mac and can be used as production machine
2) not 100% Mac but can be still used as production machine since what's missing does not matter
3) Ok mostly working I can live with this. What's missing is not an issue for what I am (will be) doing with it.
4) does kind of work but good enough to play with OSX without buying a Mac

on a funny note the ProBook G3 you can have 2 'disks' but due to design you have to remove the casing for the SSD.
one is NVMe one is SSD without case and they support more than 16Gb memory (I have 24Gb on mine)
the G4 (silver color range with no DVD) have a different layout. I assume the others after this are the same.

Fine, but you're not making a full case. All of us are ignoring the amount of time we must invest to get there. It's not like 1-grab the OS, 2-install, 3-start working. Nowhere near that, actually. But we take it as "fun".

When it comes to costs, I would rather assume that desktops are mor cost efficient than laptops. Laptops are quite a mess, imho.

I was not making any case as such.
Every one has his own agenda/goal!

It is like building a 'kit car'
You do not do it for the price or time or cost.
It is for the satisfaction to do it and drive it afterward!

Bottom line I am like everyone else for that one (the probook)
Time... Do/did not Care. Fun... Yes. Headashes... I stopped counting!
I only did/do it since I had 2 probook at hand.
One live (M$ (SSD) and Linux (M2)).
With the spare one I had a go at my spare time.
For my case with this 'spare' laptop, it would cheaper than a real Macbook 2nd hand with same spec... If I was to use it as a 'Mac' but I am still tinkering.

'Desktop' is cheaper than 'Laptop' if you want performance.
Most high end laptops do have Nvidia which these days is a bummer.

Yeah, absolutely shame. That and the fact Ryzen IGP (Vega 8 etc.) is not supported (yet). Ryzens are hell of machines, the 4750 in a ThinkPad T14s just blew me away. Lighntning fast, cool and excellent quality. And I have to run it with crappy Windows. Meh.

How can it NOT be the end?

How will you guys hackintosh if the OS doesn't run on X86-64?

It may be possible to "emulate" the Apple M1 but I imagine it will probably run like a slug. Think about it... The M1 is able to run some X86-64 code at faster than native speeds with its binary translation layer...

just business or also a bit of 'Steam'.
I know off topic but curious:)
Just business for now. Powerful GPU needs a powerful cooling which makes laptops heavy and clumsy. For myself I prefer playing on my water-cooled machine. Air cooling is inefficient and loud.

And yes, I concur: Hackintoshing is dead according to current prospects. It will be a slow and painful death.

Hackintoshing on x86/64 is dead or to put it nicely at a dead end.
People can rant/rave about it this are the fact.
It will be frozen it time. (I repeat myself here) I still have a working iMac PPC with Adobe CS3 and it is more than usable which is amazing considering its age.

Now who knows what the future for Windows will be! Still x86/64 or Risk or both? And if Risk, what type of Risk (Apple Flavour).

Hackintoshing the way 'we' know might be dead but who knows what the future Hackintoshing will be.

One last thing.... Translation layer is only needed until all is running native. Afterward Apple can just remove it from the DIE and replace it by other stuff.... As memory or core or else.

I don't know what you guys talk about really,
Its really hard to believe they led bunch of people buying a 10K$+ machine (a real mac pro) which based on Intel's tech will be out of date in 4-5 years...while mac pro 5,1 still getting system updates to this day.
moreover, lets assume they will at least grace their poor costumers with 10 years ahead to the mac pro (and hacks) of updates.

as I see it...there's more chances Apple will abound that silicon **** before they'll let go of Intel.
p.s -
even if everything u say is right, the community will only thrive by chip and boards modding, ARM is still manufactured in china and we all know that they sell to the highest bidder.

for anyone interested:

I don't know what you guys talk about really
1) I never said this will be tomorrow. But more in few years time therefore anyone can enjoy OSX on x86/x64 for a while.

2) I am not interested in p..g contest. therefore the '****' has not point with me.

3) if you want the freedom to create what you want. Create your own tools! Do not use someone else.
It is what Apple just did.
Some might not like it but here you go.
This is good for completion.
Intel/AMD will have to work harder to prove their worth and not take anything for granted.
M$ already sell computers running windows on Arm. The only drag is native Apps from 3rd parties.
To be funny this remind me the time M$ was selling NT for Alpha chip. I ran Exchange on them, they were good but lack of 3rd parties support was a pain. *nix was ok if you had the source to recompile the apps
Risk-V will be another contender which is also coming.

3) No problem modding with an Arm board... when available.
for now we have to settle to Raspberry PI or the like (I have the now defunct 'Nextchip')
