So, how long before macOS is seen on a Raspberry Pi?
Maybe Apple will shrink down the M1 Mac mini a few years from now, so small they'd call it the Apple Pi.

"Looks so good you almost want to lick it" as Steve Jobs once said. In this case, cut a slice to eat.

"We've done this before," added Joswiak, referring to previous transitions to PowerPC and to Intel. But this time, it's all baked at home—and that makes it a different kind of victory for Apple. Greg Joswiak SVP Marketing at Apple

I am surprised at how Apple offered three Macs this quickly with the M1. It's beyond impressive to say the least. I don't see the point of building a Hackintosh after today. I hate it because tonymac has allowed me to enjoy Mac OS for a fraction of the cost of buying from Apple. I love it because this is the most exciting thing I've seen come out in computing in a long time - maybe ever.

If you are upgrading to Big Sur a Hackintosh is going to be limited and probably slow in comparison to even the low end M1 Mac. Apple has bypassed cpu makers and graphic card makers in one step. Most users will never need to upgrade anything if the specs are real. If you can believe the hype you get an efficient system that instantly comes on and has more than enough power for anything you throw at it. I'm sure the detractors will spend a lot of time trying to figure out what the new Macs can't do, but I would rather enjoy my time with a system that I don't have to patch, fix, and adjust all the time. Can't wait to see what's next and what the M2 will be like.

Thanks Tony Mac for all you did. It has been great. Time for me to load stuff up on eBay and get a new Mac.

I never say never.....but in this case the answer is never.

Apple silicon is NOT a Qualcomm ARM chip. It is a custom Apple chip that happens to implement ARM instruction-set. BUT and this is the rub...the M1 chip has so much hardware "around" the ARM instruction set, that the Pi will NEVER have so trying to EMULATE that hardware in the Pi will be impossible. For example the Secure-Enclave hardware within the chip is hardware security that cannot be easily be hacked to be software module.

Of course anything is possible....but beyond the scope of even a handful of geniuses

Apple will use ARM CPU/GPU from high end smartfon thats all. So power of the new mac mini is like
a smartphone not a computer. No possible get higher benchmarks on ARM CPU than Intel CPU.

16 gig of ram max is ouch. HDMI 2.0 vs 2.1 is meh.
But here is biggest killer at least based on supported accessories, egpu support is gone. if the future really is apple cpu/gpu only and they are killing off egpu, that doesn't bode well even if cpu is amazing. Now we still don't know what they will put inside an imac and mac pro, but if rumors are true that it's some kind of dedicated apple gpu, AMD will probably be kicked soon too, which is a shame because AMD is actually catching up and giving big nvidia a run, especially in value per dollar.

will their gpu be as good as AMD or nvidia, who knows, but point is it doesn't look like it's an upgradable one like an egpu is. internal only means truly the most throw away macs yet. full iphone dump and replace mode with down to literally zero upgradable internals and curtain closing on how much can be done externally.

Just my 2 cents and possibly some positive thoughts... This is a lot of assumption based on early release of low-end systems. It was largely expected the real launch is next year and this year is "as soon as possible" designs. We could see new models next year and a lot of changes as Big Sur is updated. If anything I've seen over time with these is to not jump too fast on assumptions.

egpu is a huge elephant in room and many were hoping todays event addressed it. Then silently removing it from supported accessories is troubling too. first gen or not, these should support egpu (and maybe they do, but apple needs to clarify one way or another and the silence is troubling).

I literally had one of these in checkout. I was one click from buying when I saw the tweet and closed cart. I want one of these for travel/work but when at home i want to plug it into an egpu
