Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

I've tried this method to get the LG Ultrafine 5K to run in 4K (see attachment), but unfortunately the monitor stays black:
View attachment 493614

I was able to turn it on one time, but it could only display in the Gigabyte Boot screen, in BIOS and in OpenCore Boot Menu, and only after I have done the following in BIOS:

Settings > IO Ports > Initial Display Ports = "IGFX" (was earlier "PCIe 1 Slot", where I have my Radeon VII)
+
Settings > IO Ports > Internal Graphics = Enabled (was earlier "Disabled")

When I go into the boot menu and select my OSX boot drive to start OSX, the apple loading screen starts and halfway thru the monitor shuts off again.

Strangely though is that the OSX system recognizes the speakers which are fully functional and the 1080p web camera as well as the microphone next to it. So I can use these, but the panel is completely off.

Any idea what I am doing wrong? Gigabyte only write how I should plug the cables, which I have done and which apparently have been done correctly (otherwise I would never be able to see anything on the monitor?). But they don't write anywhere if I need to change anything in BIOS or do anything else to get it to work.

I have written to Gigabyte's support about this, but as people may know it takes about a week to get a reply, which doesn't make it very helpful.

I have ordered a GC-Titan Ridge AIC to get full 5K, but unfortunately I will have that card in 2 weeks from now, so finding a solution with the on-board Thunderbolt ports waiting for it would be very pleasant.
You are only connecting one display? The LG UltraFine 5K has two DisplayPort inputs internally from Thunderbolt. I guess one is primary and the other is secondary. I wonder if the motherboard Thunderbolt controller is connecting the wrong LG UltraFine 5K DisplayPort input to the Radeon? I don't know if that's a thing (if the LG UltraFine 5K requires a certain input to be used for 4K and can't do 4K from the other input). The only fix would be to bypass Thunderbolt and use a method that does only DisplayPort + USB such as a Belkin Charge and Sync cable, or Wacom Link Plus. That can only work if you are using the later LG UltraFine 5K that has the Titan Ridge Thunderbolt controller which supports USB-C input.

Hi @CaseySJ

I still haven't resolved the random freeze/crash problem. I did the memtest86 and it there were 0 errors
so that wasn't it.
A couple of things I noticed: It never crashes when Logic Pro X is running and I have tons of plugins
and instruments that I use. The random freeze seems to happen mainly when the computer is idling or not much is going on.

I read that @happyjohn78 was having similar problems and I'm using iMac 20,2 as well but I have a
i9 10900F processor. Do you have any other suggestions to try to solve my problem.
As I said before it is running great with Logic Pro X 10.5.1 which is what I mainly use my computer for.

Thanks

If the computer freezes only during idle periods, perhaps the problem is related to entering or exiting sleep mode? If you manually put the computer to sleep, does it (a) enter sleep and stay asleep, and (b) wake up properly?

macOS performs various tasks in the background during idle periods, such as:
  • Analyze images in the Photos library
  • Perform Spotlight indexing
  • Synchronize with iCloud
  • Etc.
So let's try this:
  • From System Preferences --> Energy Saver, move the slider all the way to the right, where it says Never. This disables sleep.
  • Use the computer for a couple of days to see if it still freezes.
If the computer still freezes, then try this:
  • Restore the System Preferences --> Energy Saver slide back to its original position to re-enable sleep after X minutes.
  • But now log out of iCloud from System Preferences --> Apple ID --> Overview.
  • Use the computer for a couple of days to see if it still freezes.

[..]
  • Because I do not own a Thunderbolt monitor[..]

Sure. Nothing towards you (or anyone else for what matters).

  • An HDMI or DisplayPort ghost plug may be helpful in overcoming the blank screen problem. Notice I said "may be helpful" -- I did not say "it will be helpful".

Ok. Might get one when I am ready with my system.

  • We do know that the Z490 Vision D cannotdrive the LG UltraFine 5K at full 5K because it has only one DP-In port.
    • Two DP-In ports are necessary for full 5K because it's the only way to achieve 5K with 10-bit color.
    • DP Stream #1 paints the left half of the monitor
    • DP Stream #2 paints the right half of the monitor
  • But with only one DP stream, the monitor is limited to 4096x2304 instead of the full 5120x2880.

I guessed that but thanks for reminding it.
I am going to get a Vision G + Titan Ridge 2.0 card. I was thinking to try a Vision D + Titan Ridge 2.0 but Vision D doesn't have any Thunderbolt header; if I got it correctly, it is not strictly necessary to connect headers, but without headers the card might give errors. Do you have any clue on that?

Can I ask you a quick question? Do you use Parallels to run Windows (or is there anyone using Parallels)? Is there any problem when connecting/disconnecting USB devices between MacOS & Windows?

I don't have problems entering and staying asleep as well as waking up as long as I turn off my MOTU 828 MK3 Firwire audio interface before.

I'll try to put it into never sleep mode and see if this helps.

A freeze can occur sometimes after only using it for 2 minutes or sometimes it takes a couple of hours.
I might have 2 or 3 freezes in a row. It is very strange.

With the Z490 Vision D, the GC-Titan Ridge 2.0 will work as long as we connect a jumper between the middle and top pins of the 5-pin J1 header. That forces the card to power on. I have a GC-Titan Ridge v1.0 installed in my own Z490 Vision D, and it works well.

Can I ask you a quick question? Do you use Parallels to run Windows (or is there anyone using Parallels)? Is there any problem when connecting/disconnecting USB devices between MacOS & Windows?
Parallels runs well on an Intel-based Hackintosh. No problems connecting/disconnecting USB devices between the host and guest operating systems.

Hi @CaseySJ thank you for your fantastic guide, everything was smooth as butter.

P.S. I have 4K monitor and I usually scale interface to 2560x1440. On current system I have weird bug (on screenshot). Changing scaling fixes it but until next reboot. Any idea how to fix it?

At least one other person encountered this problem, but I don't recall the solution or workaround. Let's see if we can troubleshoot it here, and if successful, I'll add it to Post 1.
  • What is the make/model of your monitor?
  • Are you connecting via HDMI or DisplayPort cable?
  • Was macOS installed from scratch, or was an existing macOS SSD transplanted into this system?
  • What is the make/model of your RX 5700 XT?
  • If there's a "Factory Reset" option on the monitor itself (via its on-board menu), have you tried a factory reset?
  • What system name are you using? iMac19,1 or iMac20,2?
  • If nothing else works, please try SwitchResX from here. There's a trial period, and a license is quite inexpensive. If you need help with SwitchResX, just ask.

Hi Casey.

Thank you for an awesome build and guide. Very easy to sort out. I have a successful iMac20.2 Config. i9 10900K, X490 Vision D system running. My only issue was some apps would crash on launch. Fixed this with disabling iGPX from another post. Worked great. Happy to say my system is fully functioning, even TB3 without the firmware flashing. Idles at 24-28c maxes at 5.2 60-65c no throttling at all. Fans are at about 600rpm and very quiet. Amazing. Thank you so much for the help. First Hack build for me.

Glad to hear it and welcome to the forum!

If iGPU is enabled and Platform ID is set to 0x3E980003, then those apps should not crash. Simply check if you selected config-AMD-GPU.plist instead of config-Intel-iGPU.plist.
