[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Big Sur is in beta and support for it is very limited. We're mostly on our own, with the help of Google of course.

I would suggest reinstalling Big Sur from scratch (i.e. erase the NVMe SSD) using the OC 0.6.2 EFI.
I'm back up and running !

- Created a new user account and kept the same short name as my previous one. All data was imported, although applications were not. I then copied over all applications, and content from /Library/Application Support. Works great (and solved a bug I was having).

Back on to the current problem:

As noted before, I can see my Big Sur boot option in OC. However, booting to it simply results in the Apple logo and a frozen progress bar.
I tried to enable verbose mode & debug, but I wasn't able to do that. OC boots verbose before showing the picker, but there is no verbose output after that.

Steps taken to enable debug mode & verbose:
  • Added -v flag to boot args
  • Set target to 67 (and the log level to whatever number is recommended in the OC guide)
  • Replaced all OC files with their debug counterpart
  • Enabled Watchdog
  • Enabled AppleDebug
  • Enabled ApplePanic
I also tried holding cmd+v during boot. No verbose output after OpenCore has started and I select a drive to boot to.

The issue is one I have dealt with recently. It seems that there are two system processes that may be responsible for the freezing of the finder. They are called "pkd" and "lsd" and can be seen in the Activity Monitor app in your utilities folder. When you encounter the finder freeze, including when you try to save something in an application, and an open/save dialog appears or tries to appear and is frozen, if you force quit pkd and/or lsd, the finder will respond again but unfortunately, the freeze will return with certain activities on the Mac. I traced mine to two things. First, disable any extra extensions for Safari. Sometimes certain safari extensions exacerbate the behavior. You may notice that it happens more often when you have Safari running or that the freezes start as soon as you open Safari. But, second, and more importantly if you are using Final Cut Pro like I am, you must erase the Fxfactory plugins completely from your system including all directories for those plugins, and all preferences, and then reinstall them. After I did that, I don't have the issues anymore for the last month or more. It might also help you to know that my system is using the latest system version, 10.5.7, latest Hackintosh plugins, and Opencore 0.6.2, BIOS f9i, and Final Cut Pro 10.4.10.
Thanks a lot! I have been facing this issues since one month. literally you saved my life..i uninstalled all fxfactory plugins. before title and effects panels in FCP struggled to load and give spinning beach ball now everything is fine but when i do fcp open and close spinning beach ball appears sometime.Actually I don't have any knowledge on hackintosh plugins you referred above..could you please let me know what they are and how can i check they are up to date..10.15.07 is my Catalina version..I don't know what would happen if reinstall fxfactory plugin..will reinstall and let you know.

I’ve been wondering about using OCC to update OC. What are the steps you used?

Steps I undertake to upgrade OpenCore to the latest (stable) released build (it now takes me 30 minutes to do this per system):

OC Gen-X

With OC Gen-X I generate my config.plist (and nothing more then that…).

Install OC Gen-X.app. Download from: https://github.com/Pavo-IM/OC-Gen-X

Explanation per tab:

System Type
Choose System (processor) type and don’t select any kexts or drivers. In my case i7 9700 I choose Coffee Lake.

Kext
don’t select anything

Firmware Drivers
don’t select anything

SMBIOS
Fill SMBIOS with your current serials etc. Use OpenCore Configurator to get the info from your current config.plist

Additional BootArgs
Fill in your current used boot arguments

Click Generate EFI and use only the generated config.plist from the generated folder.

OCBuilder

With OCBuilder I create my core EFI folder.

Install OCBuilder.app. Download from: https://github.com/Pavo-IM/ocbuilder
Select version: ‘Release’, with Kexts (it downloads the latest kexts from the appropriate Github page).
Choose a location to save the EFI folder (e.g. desktop) and click ‘Build’.

How to proceed?

Open the EFI folder you just created and copy the created config.plist in there

Copy all of your DDST’s, ACPI’s and drivers from your current (old) EFI to the folders you just created, and make sure you will use the latest kexts (you just downloaded most of them)

OpenCore Configurator

Download the latest here: https://mackie100projects.altervista.org/download-opencore-configurator/

Open your newly made config.plist with OpenCore Configurator and load all your DDST’s, ACPI’s, Drivers and Kexts.

Now, compare with 2 OpenCore Configurator screens your current (old) config.plist with your newly made config.plist, to make sure all your settings are also in the new one.

That’s it. Of course, before you load your new EFI, make sure you have a back-up which you can load back if things failed.

Here it is, but you'll probably see 'em working like last time
The two external USB 2.0 ports are HS09 and HS10, both of which are missing. Are you using USBPorts.kext or the standard SSDT-UIAC-DESIGNARE-Z390-V7.aml?

HS08 and HS13 enable USB 2.0 protocol on the two Thunderbolt 3 ports. If you enabled these ports, it is likely that you elected to disable the two USB 2.0 (black) ports on the rear IO panel to keep the total number at 15.

The Hackintosh plugins are all in the OpenCore 0.6.2 update zip that CaseySJ made or you can just download them individually on Github.

That's pretty slick, thanks! Works great.

I made a OpenCore version (1920x1080), feel free to use of course :)
