Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

Conversely, the Z490 Vision G will -not- boot with Dortania guide suggestions, but does with @CaseySJ ‘s efi.
Exactly. The point is that Dortania is a wonderful, but general purpose guide. It is not tailored specifically to each motherboard. Instead, it provides “common denominator” recommendations.

I'm just asking, maybe there is a room for improvement :)
Do you want to improve this guide or improve Dortania’s guide? Neither Vision G nor Vision D will boot with Dortania’s guide if we follow that guide to the letter. So which guide needs improvement?

The answer is that Dortania is a general purpose guide, but this one is specifically tailored to a specific motherboard.

This guide has changed in the past and will continue to evolve. Each time a new OpenCore build is released, for example, we modify the settings to take advantage of the new features added not only to OpenCore, but to the rest of the Acidanthera lineup.

Once you have your system up and running, feel free to experiment with different settings. Everyone is welcome to contribute to this thread.

Please see my previous reply (post 2804).
I don't understand, there is no link in post 2804
You suggest I should try to change the ROM value in PlatformInfo?

I was referring to the Quick Reference to Mini-Guides and Micro-Guides spoiler, but I realize it's in the Z390 Designare build guide instead of this one. This is actually a great opportunity for everyone to spend a moment looking through that spoiler because it addresses a lot of problems that apply equally to the Z490 Vision D. For example, whenever someone reports a Sleep/Wake issue with Z490 Vision D, I refer them to the Sleep Aid, which happens to be in the Z390 Designare thread.

Here's the Z390 Desginare thread. The Quick Reference spoiler is near the top of Post 1. Then you'll find the link I referred to in my previous screenshot.

Hi,

First of all, I would like to give a big thanks to @CaseySJ for this very detailed and excellent guide! It's my first time to build a Hackintosh and it went without a single error! I almost can't believe how easy it was! :)

My setup is the following:

OS: Catalina 10.15.7
Motherboard: Z490 Vision D
CPU: Intel Core i9 10850K 10x 3.60GHz So.1200 WOF
RAM: 4x 8GB Ballistix
GPU: Sapphire Vega 56 Pulse
NVME SSD: Crucial P1 500GB
PSU: 850 Watt be quiet! Straight Power 11 Modular 80+ Gold
Case: be quiet! Pure Base 500DX
CPU Cooler: be quiet! Shadow Rock 3

I used the built-in Wifi and Bluetooth by using OC-061-Intel-Wireless-VISION-D during setup and this worked very well. I was able to connect to Wifi and can use my Apple Magickeyboard and Trackpad from my iMac 27 2019.

I also checked everything in the Installation Verification section, and everything is ok. System Preferences even reports the correct CPU model!

I just wish TB3 is working so that I can use my Qnap TB3 10GBE but I'm a bit nervous about flashing the chip. So instead, I plan to use an ASUS 10G XG-C100F SFP+. I haven't installed it yet, but meanwhile, is there any required settings to use this card?

I will be using this machine mainly to edit videos on DaVinci Resolve 16 (I currently use a mac mini 2018 i7 with a Sapphire Vega 56 Pulse inside a Razer Core X) and in the guide for the Z390 Designare, there's a section called Going the Extra Mile and instructions to set headless platform ID 0x3E980003.

My question is, is this applicable to Catalina 10.15.7 as well?

Also, I read @starchyfind 's post on the test he made using different models and I'm thinking of changing the model to iMacPro1,1 (current is iMac19,1). Can I just update the model without a complete install? And do I also need to update the platform ID to 0x3E980003 if using iMacPro1,1?

Finally, do I need to update Serial Number, Board Serial Number, and System UUID?

Thank you once again! I am so happy that everything worked so smoothly just by following this guide!

I have one problem , I upgraded my 2nd SSD (z490 Sabrent) to Big Sur - it runs great.
But in OC picker at startup the Big Sur SSD shows up as Preboot - if I select it Big Sur starts up fine.
Is there anyway I can get Preboot to show as the SSD drive name (z490 Sabrent). Also OC picker is showing as a small
list top left corner of screen, not in centre with Icons as before.
Your expertise will be appreciated.

@la-tristesse -- it's okay to be pushy! Sometimes we all need to be pushed... :)

Just concluded a set of experiments to observe the effect of PCIE Bifurcation Support on the Vision D.

Conclusion: Gigabyte seems to have made a mistake in one of two places:

View attachment 478103
  • We can see that Slot 1 is reduced to x8
  • We can see that Slot 2 is reduced to x4
  • But what happened to the other 4 CPU lanes?
  • It seems Slot 3 is still connected to PCH and is still splitting 2 of the 4 PCH lanes with NVMe SSD.
  • Is this a Gigabyte firmware bug?

Did you got a answer from Gigabyte or is the mobo not able to split the pcie lanes unlike the z390 designare?

Big Sur volumes are labeled “Preboot”, but this should get fixed with next OpenCore release. When I installed the latest Public Beta update (from previous Public Beta to latest Public Beta) it seems to have set the correct volume name, but an NVRAM reset might change it back to Preboot.

Regarding the OpenCore Picker being a text list instead of graphical icons, simply review the OpenCore configuration in Tech Talk (post 1) to study what settings are used and why. The short answer is to set Misc —> Boot —> Picker —> Built In.

If nothing works, simply download the OC 0.6.1 EFI zip from the build guide and transfer your serial numbers into the appropriate config.plist.

This motherboard does not split lanes, unfortunately. The reply from Gigabyte is explained in the Troubleshooting / FAQ section in Post 1.
