I'm working on my first Powermac G5 hackintosh project and I'm trying to figure out how can I install a silent PSU in the least invasive way (not cutting [too much?] the top tray or using the native psu case).

I'm planning on using an Asus ROG MAXIMUS XI HERO with an M.2 SSD and a Radeon VII GPU (the PSU calculator said I need 603w), so I'm guessing 600w~650w would work.

I'm doing a ton of research, and I just learned that the ideal form factor for the case at the bottom is the 1U one. But those are normally server PSUs and are too loud. So the quietest solution would be a gutted PSU to fit the original case.

I'm an enthusiast and not an engineer. So I wouldn't want to mess with soldering or wiring. I don't want to create a fire hazard.

And for the top tray, an SFX PSU would probably fit without cutting the tray.

Now, my main question is:
Does anyone know of a 1U sized silent PSU that would give me the right wattage?

Or, would it be possible that someone could pre-mod a silent one for me and ship it so it fits the original PowerMac bottom case?

Thank you in advance for all your help.

When I was using a G5 case, I put a standard ATX PSU above the top tray where the hard drive rack was. You have pull the divider out to get it up in there as it just barely fits. I drilled lots of holes in the divider where the fan on the PSU is, which is pointed down.

I think you'll have a lot of trouble using a 1U PSU if quiet is what you're looking for.

Thank you for your feedback. After much reading and video-watching, I agree that using the top tray will probably be the best solution for the "silent" factor.

If you want to use the original power supply case, all you have to do is choose a power supply that has a fan on top of it, open the case, remove the fan and fit the new guts to the old case. You would have to pass the power wire thru somewhere if you don't want to do soldering.

The way I did mine, I started with a corsair 750W modular, I kept the original mac power plug so I had to solder wires. I installed 2 new Noctua fans in the original mac power supply and I plugged them at the place where the 120mm corsair fan was connected. Now my power supply adjusts the fan speed as needed and it is nearly silent.
