[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Just ran Geekbench 5 on Big Sur Public Beta 2. CPU scores:

That's surprising. Even single core performance is better than my 9900k...

Cheaper than my 9900k too...

How are amd hacks in general? Usable as daily driver? Experimental? Drawbacks?

Not sur if AMD CPU is a good idea for a professional build. Some apps need Intel to work well

Hi Casey,

Yes I did this immediately after changing over from 0.6.0 to 0.6.1 to ensure I had all the patches and kexts the same. All seemed to replicate and double checked. I don't think I ever had any specific settings or patches for it, it just always worked, from clover to OC 0.6.0.

EDIT: I have noticed that I have device properties for the Intel i211 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet listed in OC and in addition to this I have the SmallTree-Intel-211.... kext in my Kext Folder. As I understand it, my MB only has Intel i219v GbE and the Aquantia 10gb. See screenshots attached. Do you think my settings are wrong or might be impacting on why my Aquantia port is not working.

The i211 DeviceProperties entry should be deleted for AORUS Xtreme. And SmallTreeIntel kext should either be disabled or deleted.

In other words, we have to compare Clover and OC settings, then ensure that OC settings conform to Clover settings.

Let's summarize the issues here:
  • FCPX will only launch if it's left running in a previous boot session so that on next boot, macOS resumes it. Is this correct? Or FCPX will launch if it's launched immediately after logging in, but will not launch a minute or so later?
  • FCPX Export results in "Loading Destinations", but never comes out of this? The Export dialog does not appear?
  • iSkySoft Video Converter Ultimate also experiences similar problems? If so, does iSkySoft also fail to Export video?
  • The computer sometimes fails to shut down. By re-launching the Finder a couple of times it will eventually shut down?
Questions:
  • Are you using several third-party plug-ins?
  • Did this problem start recently? If so, was the system (and FCPX) working properly for some time before then?
  • Do you have the option to disable some or all third-party plug-ins?
FCPX will work without issues if I open it when I login to macOS. If I do other things like browsing, emails etc it will boot again but I can't export and can't quit also (only force quit). Im not sure about the time after 1st login but if I say 20-30 minutes after login then its 100% sure that it won't work.
Yes the "export dialog" does not appear.
Yes iSkysoft has similar problems. It works when I login w/o issues but after a period of time it's not converting and the apple rotating circle is spinning forever (only force quit works also).
Yes the computer after relaunching the finder it will shut down at least. If when I login I will do shut down in the first minutes then it shuts down without issues.

Yes Im using mainly photography and videography plugins like Red Giant suite and Nik Collection. But I was using the exact same plugins when my system was running without issues for more than a year (with your guides installing Mojave and then upgrading to Catalina).
The problem was there after installing OC 0.6.0 (fresh installation). This was done twice recently.
I can't disable third party plugins but I can uninstall them. Im sure its not about them cause my 2nd system has the same plugins and its working also for more than a year w/o issues (installing Mojave and then upgrading to Catalina with Clover).

From my conclusion I think that all this is related either to iGpu or AMD Gpu acceleration.
That's why I would like to learn from other users on this thread that if they have similar issues with fcpx. Most ppl here have almost identical systems.

Not going to switch any time soon, I really don't need an even more experimental build than the one I have now. But I am surprised by the high Geekbench score.

We know that every Hackintosh, including an Intel-based system, has some issues. On AMD-based systems, Sleep/Wake has been the most common "high impact" problem for users. It has prevented or at least discouraged the machine from being used as a daily driver because it's a constant power draw.

However, to everyone's total surprise, macOS Big Sur fixes sleep/wake on most AMD Hackintoshes. (Or maybe the Big Sur kernel patches developed for OpenCore is responsible for this.) Anyway, this is a huge boon for practicality.

Some of the other issues we observe:
  • VM applications that use Apple's macOS hypervisor do not work. Older 5.x versions of VMWare Fusion may still work. I haven't spent much time on this. I don't think Docker will work.
  • USB port configuration is more difficult, but Hackintool really helps. We use USBPorts.kext instead of USBInjectAll.kext. There are often three USB controllers and they're located at XHC, XHC0, XHC1.
  • PCI path names are quite different from Intel-based systems. ASRock firmware (BIOS) for X570 is just awfully written in my opinion. The Thunderbolt SSDT, for example, has glaring errors that have not been fixed. When PCIe cards are installed in various slots, the PCI paths of other devices are shuffled around. Imagine seeing your NVMe SSD in PCI0.GPP2, for example, but then seeing it move magically to PCI0.GPP1 when something is inserted into a PCIe slot. Whenever we install or remove certain devices from the motherboard, we're always checking to see if our SSDTs are still valid. However, once the system components are stable, then SSDTs will not change.
    • Personal opinion: I will not buy an ASRock X570 (or B550) board again until they completely overhaul their awful ACPI/firmware. It's better to try Gigabyte's boards.
  • There is no native CPU power management, but there is an AMDRyzenCPUPowerManagement.kext, but it is not yet compatible with Big Sur. There is also an AMDSMCProcessor.kext for VirtualSMC (both are developed by "trulyspinach"). And the same developer has created AMD Power Gadget that provides a very nice GUI for monitoring core speeds and temps. And it has experimental support for fan monitoring and control. There are several impressive screenshots in the GitHub page.
  • Some or most Adobe applications may not run.
  • Thunderbolt hot plug does not work. However, I have not yet tested a flashed GC-Titan Ridge. But hot plug of USB-C devices on Thunderbolt ports is okay.
  • A number of X570 boards are now Thunderbolt-certified and/or contain Thunderbolt headers. Those boards would be highly preferred. I would actually avoid an AMD motherboard with on-board Thunderbolt because their flash ROMs are virtually impossible to read/write with an external SPI reader/programmer.

But I am surprised by the high Geekbench score.
See this post in the AMD announcement thread:
The Ryzen 5 3600X scores almost as well as the i9-9900K according to Passmark. Even then, the Intel i9-9900K system is the better choice for an Audio Pro's hackintosh, spending the extra 190 USD for the i9-9900K makes sense.

@CaseySJ I'm trying to update to mojave and see if it changes something. Can I just install it directly with untouched clover? I'm at latest build
I don't think reinstalling Mojave will fix this, but you can try. The existing CLOVER EFI can certainly be used to re-install Mojave.

Also try removing WhateverGreen.kext from CLOVER/kexts/Other. The RX580 is natively supported in Mojave so it's worth trying...

@CaseySJ dumb question but your DESIGNARE build is the "best" build in Hackintosh history? really I don't see any notable difference with a real Mac

Do you prefer your Z490 Vision D or Z390 Designer as Hackintosh? and why?
