Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

Hi
I've found out on how to get verbose (cmd+v) during opencore boot and so I got the installation boot message. Anyone can help me out to tell me what is wrong? I am stopped on this screen.

Have you unlocked your motherboard's MSR 0xE2 (CFG-Lock)?

Here to report another successful Z490 Vision D build. Thanks @CaseySJ and others who've made it this smooth. Finally retiring the workhorse Sandybridge 2600k that's served faithfully. Pulled up a Logic session that used to struggle and the 10700k handles it superbly.

System (iMac 19,1):
Board: Gigabyte Z490 Vision D
CPU: i7 10700k (Dark Rock Pro 4)
RAM: 2x16GB Corair Vengeance @ 3200Mhz
GPU: Gigabyte AORUS RX580 8GB
Storage: 2x1TB Samsung 860 Pro (dual booting Catalina/Windows 10) + 2x4TB WD Black
Case: Fractal Design R5
Displays: 2x Dell U2414H

Tested with both an RME Babyface and RME Fireface UFX and both work perfectly (so far!).

Wonderful! Glad to hear it.

Are you using the PCIe 4.0 version of Sabrent Rocket?
Regarding issues with Windows, I generally ask people to search for answers on Google. This thread is principally about macOS.

My ADATA, Sabrent, and Silicon Power NVMe SSDs are still well above 95% (most are between 99%-100%) even after months of use. A Hackintosh per se does not shorten the life of an SSD. Other factors may be involved such as TRIM Support. We should look at System Information --> NVMExpress to check if TRIM Support is Yes or No.

That's a yes on the Rocket being PCIe 4.0. I have not installed a NVMe for MacOS yet. I'm dual booting with my Samsung in a PCI SATA 2.5 inch drive card for MacOS. That gets about 500 read/write just as with my Z77. I do like that it doesn't require a cable, but eventually I'll run MacOS on an NVMe device.

On Trim that's a no. Opinions on Trim seem so mixed that I stopped enabling it. And the Windows NVMe device doesn't even appear in NVMExpress. I think this is because I installed the Gigabyte drivers from Intel in Windows. This altered the BIOS for NVMe devices. The speed both before and after the driver install in Windows was exactly the same.

I have the bios updated to F5 so I thought I should not worry to this, should I? Thanks for your time answering me!

On Vision G, the latest BIOS is F6. I believe only F6 has CFG-Lock disabled.

A Hackintosh might actually wear a Samsung NVME out, at least. Apparently the TRIM support for that doesn't work as expected despite being listed as Yes.

I and several others have noticed they run hotter than they should on macOS, and this OC build guide describes why.

If macOS is not handling TRIM or the controller properly, and it runs hotter, it might wear it out faster.

I switched to a Sabrent Rocket 4.0 for these reasons. I figure even though I've ruled out the 970 Evo Plus as the faulty device on my machine, might as well trade for the Sabrent Rocket 4.0 now before the 980 comes out (which will also have a controller macOS probably doesn't like) and lowers the value of the 970. It runs a lot cooler and if/when I do a PCI 4 build (looking forward to Z590 Vision D build with Rocket Lake that actually supports PCI 4) it will get a speed boost the 970 wouldn't.

Very good.
  • If you unplug the Kraken from the USB header, does the system enter sleep and remain asleep?
  • If system still fails to sleep, the (a) reconnect the Kraken, but (b) remove the Fenvi FV-T919 and check sleep again.
Be sure to shutdown the system and flip power switch on PSU to OFF whenever disconnecting or attaching components to the motherboard.

So I just home and tried the following. When all the USB headers are plugged in and I put the system to sleep, monitor goes to sleep and after a few seconds the computer completely turns off. Tried removing the Kraken, removed the Fenvi, and got the same results.

I also installed Windows and when I set it to sleep the same thing is happening. Set it to sleep and it completely turns off.

Thank you very much. Your suggestion FIXED the issue I was facing with. This reply is being written from my new hack installed to Gigabyte Z490 Vision G.

Hello Rob,

ProTools Version 20.5.0.207, (2020.R1.0).
Logic 10.5.1
Luna 1.0.8

Catalina: 10.15.16

Three rooms and four systems operational. All Vision D Z490.
We previously used three Z390 builds and have zero regrets
migrating to the Z490 chipset.

The 390 Designare and processors are now retired in the Z490 boxes.

We use a few UA Apollo 8x and 8xP interfaces with UA Octo’s with these
Systems daily.

I am confident you will be pleased with. We are.

Tony…..

10.15.16? Did you mean 10.15.6? I only ask because I ordered my 10900K last night along with my Vision D and plan on building it next week and the week after. I use Pro Tools as well and the Avid website says that Pro Tools 2020.5 is only compatible up to 10.15.5. I have the files for both versions of macOS ready and would love to clarify which if you've been fine running the latest version of macOS with Pro Tools

In case it matters the specs will be:
10900k
Z490 Vision D
32GB 3466MHz Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB
Gigabyte Gaming OC 5700XT
Kraken X73 AIO
1TB Intel 660p boot drive
500GB Samsung 850 EVO for PT session files (In current system)
3TB Seagate Barracuda for mas storage (In current system)
I'm also carrying over the fenvi and the PSU from my current hackintosh
Entho Evolve X case

I currently use and 2nd gen Focusrite 18i8 but I'm looking at the new Quantum 2626 with thunderbolt 3 once this system is up and running
