Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

With the stock CPU cooler my I7 seems to peak at 100C when I run Geekbench. It idles around 40 to 50 most of the time. I don't really want to switch to a better cooler. And I chose not to get a K chip.

Thoughts?

If your workload is bursty and you are happy with the noise levels, then the stock cooler is fine.

If you have a sustained workload and prefer more quiet, then going with a better aftermarket cooler is a good idea.

Also disable multi-core enhancement and maybe undervolt the chip in the bios.

Thank you for your response.
The main reason for me wanting to know about Mojave, is that I work with audio (Logic, Cubase & PT) and it’s a more stable OS for this.
When say older system, can this be ‘pre-built’ from another computer (Mac mini) and installed or from an older hack? Sorry I’m new to all of this and really want to understand this.
My earlier attempts to install Mojave directly on Z490 with OpenCore were unsuccessful. I have not reattempted this since, but as @trs96 mentioned, we could try transplanting an existing Mojave drive to the Z490 and seeing what happens. We'll most likely need to add the CPUID mask to OpenCore config as shown in the post below.
However, I would strongly recommend the following:
  • If you're starting fresh, start with Catalina.
  • Install and test the audio applications. If you can download trial versions, that would be ideal.
  • Check how stable those applications are over the course of a few days.
  • Then make your own decision about Catalina versus Mojave!

Thanks Casey, it has crossed my mind to do this. I’m looking now at the best option for Catalina and it looks like 10.15.5 could be a good place to start.
I’ll have a read about CPUID mask, but it would be good to know if a Mojave install can be transplanted.

As the saying goes, the proof is in the pudding. Always a good idea to test for yourself whether what people say about Catalina and audio applications is true or not.

Finally at the point of installing on my new computer and ran into this error trying to create the install USB:

When running this terminal code:
Code:
sudo "/Applications/Install macOS Catalina.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia" --volume /Volumes/Catalina-USB

It generates this error:
...
Unsure of what to do.
I've looked up the error and can't fix it. I have redownloaded from gibmacos multiple times, and tried selecting a different download option as well.

I am trying to create the USB install media on my previous hackintosh running Yosemite 10.10.5.

The gibMacOS commands completed successfully.
...
I did notice my disk utility doesn't have the same options as what was listed in the directions, but I believe it partitioned the Catalina-USB drive correctly, as MacOS Extended Journaled and it seems the partition is GUID.
Let's check some basic things first:
  • What is the size of your USB Flash Disk?
  • What is the make/model? Is it USB 3.x?
    • Ideally we should use a USB 3 16GB or larger flash disk.
    • I have always had excellent results with Samsung Bar Plus 32GB.
  • Please post a screenshot of the Disk Utility screen where we enter (a) Name of USB disk, (b) Format = MacOS Extended (Journaled), and (c) Scheme = GUID Partition Map

If it’s any help, I’ve found the latest version of Logic to be rock solid on Catalina with the Z490/10700K combo.

Thanks for that... Logic isn’t my main concern as it’s Apple, but I have to use both Pro Tools and Cubase Pro.
I guess the alternative is to have a Windows 10 boot just in case.

Hi there,

I see that you have got Logic and Pro Tools up and running. What version of PT are you running and Catalina? Seeing this is giving me hope as I too use Logic, Pro Tools and Cubase. I’m feeling this build is probably the way forward as the Z390 appears to be a bit more difficult to get hold of.
What UA device are you using too? I have an Apollo Quad with a TB3 card installed ready to make the move to a newer system.

Rob

Hello Rob,

ProTools Version 20.5.0.207, (2020.R1.0).
Logic 10.5.1
Luna 1.0.8

Catalina: 10.15.16

Three rooms and four systems operational. All Vision D Z490.
We previously used three Z390 builds and have zero regrets
migrating to the Z490 chipset.

The 390 Designare and processors are now retired in the Z490 boxes.

We use a few UA Apollo 8x and 8xP interfaces with UA Octo’s with these
Systems daily.

I am confident you will be pleased with. We are.

This is what I need to hear.
I think I shall start getting things on order and get cracking into this Hackintosh game.
I assume you have used OC 0.5.9 or 0.6.0?
You may get the odd query at some point

Thanks again for your response

Rob
