Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

SUCCESS! I tried loading optimized defaults and set the bios from scratch and I could install on nvme ssd.
Now... i'll be getting an additional nvme next month for windows. In that case, will be able to swap them so windows is in the correct slot?
If I only have on hard drive, can I partition it and run windows in another partition? (this would be to have access to windows until the second drive arrives)

Because this is a brand new machine, can you please list the components used:

  • Motherboard: Gigabyte z490 vision D
  • CPU: i7 10700k
  • GPU: Gigabyte RX 5600 XT
  • RAM make/model> Patriot Viper Steel 3200mhz 32GB (two 16gb sticks)
  • NVMe SSD make/model: Corsair mp510 480gb
  • WiFi/BT make/model: none, I connected the gigabit ethernet to a wifi repeater with ethernet
  • CPU cooler make/model: Noctua NH-DS15U
  • Monitor make/model: So far I'm usiing a dell u2211h, once I sell my thunderbolt display, I'll get maybe an LG or a BENQ PD2700u because I need color accuracy.
  • Any other PCIe cards?: No
  • Anything connected to internal USB header? (Other than Bluetooth from WiFi/BT card.)
  • Additional 2 HDD: 1 tb for storage and 320 gb because it was there...
So... I haven't tested much but it seems to be working stable. Thanks for all the help. Great guide, CaseySJ!

@sweetphreak,

Congratulations!! The devil is in the details. Tiny details can mean the difference between success and frustration.

Please don't forget Step 13 in the main guide.

Backup! I'll use the 320gb hdd for that.
BTW: Here's Cinebench results and how my About this mac looks like. I feel it was a bit faster in windows, but I will compare once I get a 2nd nvme.

Yes, no problem. M.2 drives can be swapped at any time. But always check/set the Boot Order in BIOS.
If I only have on(e) hard drive, can I partition it and run windows in another partition? (this would be to have access to windows until the second drive arrives)

Although this should be doable, I would advise against it because Windows needs a place to store its boot loader, and that place should not be the same EFI folder that OpenCore/macOS uses. When you partition a drive, only one EFI partition is allowed, so it will be shared among all operating systems on those partitions.

  1. Have you reported the X.M.P. Profile 1 problem to Gigabyte yet?
  2. Have you tried removing DIMM modules one by one?

1. I haven't reported this to Gigabyte. Just through their web support is best?
2. I tried the DIMMs one at a time in all of the slots. Nothing!
3. I moved the m.2 nvme into the middle slot before I did anything.

  • Have you tried a different set of DIMMs?
  • If you have a WiFi/BT card, have you tried removing it?
  • Are you running BIOS F5?
It's a process of elimination at this point. It can be frustrating, but it's best to do this before returning and exchanging components.

  • I don't have another set of DIMMs at the moment.
  • The WiFI/BT card hasn't arrived yet, so it's not in
  • The first thing I did before testing was update to BIOS F5
Part of me wonders how much of a loss not running XMP would be... The RAM is 3200 and nowhere near that w/o XMP

I have run tests for 3200 vs 2400 vs 2133. For productivity you're going to see at best 3-5% performance increase. In day to day usage its not noticeable at all. For gaming in Windows, I did see an increase of 20-30 fps but only in the older games. For newer games, I was probably more bottlenecked by the 980Ti.

@kiwimac
Can I ask you a question: do you have any issues with your 3rd M2 slot (the M2P one) when you have your SX8200 Pro 1 tb installed in it?

I have the Z490 Vision D, and 2 Sx8200 Pro 1 TB M2 drives. They will only work in the first two M2 slots (M2A and M2M)...
Whenever I have one of them in the 3rd slot, the computer gets stuck at a bios load failure screen, and even the mobo RGB leds don't come on.

Would love to know if you have the same problem. Gigabyte support has been no help so far.
I have exactly the same problem but with different brands; 1 Evo+ 1TB in first slot, 1 Evo+ 250GB in slot 2. As soon as I put my WD 1TB in slot 3, can't post or boot. The WD does not have to be in the 3rd slot but as soon as I have 3 NMVe SSDs installed on the MB, I can't boot. Only solution I found was to get a PCIEx4 NVMe card installed on the PCIEx4 slot which shared the bandwitdh with the M2 slot #3 but I have nothing installed in slot #3

After installing an ADATA SX8200 Pro 512GB into the bottom slot (M2P), the Vision D (BIOS F5) had no trouble at all with POST and booting up. Another NVMe SSD (Silicon Power) is installed in the middle slot, M2M.

P.S. The ADATA is shown as x2 because I have a flashed GC-Titan Ridge in the bottom long slot. Hence the lanes are shared.

Thanks for testing it!

Seems this board is picky with some people's M2 drives for some reason. I was able to get my SX8200 Windows 10 boot drive to work in the M2P slot but the board doesn't like it in there. It boots really slow, the mobo RGBs never turn on, and sometimes the mobo will reboot multiple times before loading windows.

When I put my blank M2 drive in at the same time (in 2nd M2 slot), the board won't boot and just takes me to bios load failure. When I finally enter the bios, it lists them correctly and knows they are there though. Just weird.

My guess is that something is up with the 1tb M2's or the lot # I got in particular, or something changed with my Revision 1.1 board maybe. I'm thinking it's more of a M2 drive issue.

I think I'll try to either exchange 1 of my SX8200's for a new SX8200, or maybe try a new make/model altogether like the Sabrent or Silicone Power. Any recommendations?
