I got a clean build up and running yesterday. Everything works – Bluetooth, ethernet, wifi, icloud, hand off, sleep/wake, etc. Internal HD Graphics 530 are detected for H264 and HEVC. Only complaint is after about 20 minutes of 100% load on my GPU the machine will freeze and shut down. No other crashes so far, including an hour encoding a 4k h264 video using the processor only. This machine was built to run C4D+Octane as GPU renderer. Which is why the GPU will be running at 100% for long periods of time.

I also haven't been able to find a way to check the temperature of the GPU – Tried HWmonitor, Intel Power Gadget and this terminal command
Code:
while sleep 1; do clear;ioreg -l |grep \"PerformanceStatistics\" | cut -d '{' -f 2 | tr '|' ',' | tr -d '}' | tr ',' '\n'|grep 'Temp\|Fan\|Clock'; done

Which returns this:
screen-shot-2020-07-27-at-1-40-30-pm-png.481970

I'm currently using @mattystonnie SSDT from this thread. I've also tried without that, and it didn't seem to have an effect on the crashes.

Running most up to date KEXT and drivers and clover version. Also running iMac19,1 in SMBIOS. I tried MacPro1,1 and couldn't boot.

EFI zipped and config.plist attached, thanks.

Just so as not to confuse anyone dropping by and wanting to help - are you running the RX 580 you mention in your hardware specs, or the 5700 XT in the thread title and your About this Mac screengrab?

:)

My bad, updated the hardware specs. I am running the 5700 XT. Working on adding bios screenshots now.

Still working on this issue. After learning that OSX has a Console the errors associated with the freezes/crashes are:

Aug 11 09:13:41 com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.apple.DumpGPURestart): Service only ran for 7 seconds. Pushing respawn out by 3 seconds.
Aug 11 09:13:46 com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.apple.DumpGPURestart): Service only ran for 2 seconds. Pushing respawn out by 8 seconds.
Aug 11 09:13:58 com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.apple.DumpGPURestart): Service only ran for 3 seconds. Pushing respawn out by 7 seconds.
And the title of this thread being "under load" isn't really accurate. The crashes always occur during a GPU heavy task, but they can happen quite quickly, before the GPU would have had a chance to get up to higher operating temperature.

Other things I've tried:
  • I've also tried both HDMI and Displayport cables.
  • I've tried both AptioMemoryFix.efi and OsxAptioFix3Drv.efi drivers.
  • Booting with internal graphics enabled and disabled

This is because the current NAVI drivers from Apple are poorly written and not optimized as there aren't any desktop Macs with a NAVI gpu yet. There is an iMac coming out with a 5500 so I would expect big improvements then but not likely until Big Sur.

@slim.jim Thank you for the reply! I wasn't aware that was a known issue. Would you say any further time troubleshooting would be wasted? Sounds like the only solution would be to wait for an update from Apple.

The new August 2020 Intel iMacs also have the Radeon Pro 5700 and 5700 XT as options for the GPU. They work with Catalina 10.15.6 so the drivers are there in Catalina. They are still a WIP though.

Are we sure the OS is the same build number as the currently available version of 10.15.6? I know in the past newly released products have had different build numbers when shipped. I hadn't realized they had already released the iMacs.

Over on the Navi GPU thread, people have been saying that switching to iMacPro1,1 (and running without iGPU) helps with instability on these GPUs. It seems that it doesn't work for every system, though.

You're correct. The build number on the new iMacs is reported as 19G2005 or 19G2006.

Thanks for the tip, I just switched my SMBIOS to iMacPro1,1 tested with the same rendering scenes that had given me trouble in the past and the "(com.apple.DumpGPURestart)" still take place.

Are there any Navi cards that are more stable at this point? Or are they all kind of iffy until Big Sur comes out?
