[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

@Inqnuam @joostiphone @Hackintoshron

I am installing Big Sur right this moment on my main Designare system and the same install disk is working perfectly. 25 minutes left to go.

I really don’t know why Big Sur installer doesn’t like my Test Bench.

However, the main system has i7-9700K whereas the Test Bench has i5-9600K.
Four reboots later... This was a direct installation using OpenCore 0.6.0 EFI from the mini-guide with no changes to config.plist (other than serial numbers) and no changes to BIOS settings. If anyone has an i5-9600K I would like to know whether or not a direct install of Big Sur works on your system.

P.S. Dark Mode looks much nicer on Big Sur. It was somewhat of an afterthought on Mojave/Catalina, but more seamless in Big Sur.

Hello
Im not sur that SSDTs from this guide are designed for your Asus X299 motherboard
They are for Z390 and maybe Z370 motherboards
@CaseySJ can you confirm this please?
Thank you, that's true, I wasn't sure if SSDT is compatible. Can you please help me with proper firmware for my version of the card?

Hello @pichu766,

Some comments and suggestions:
  • The RTX 2080 should be removed during installation.
  • Choose the file config-Intel-iGPU.plist as the basis for your config.plist because the iGPU will be used to drive your monitor.
  • However, on-board HDMI port may not work with the kexts provided in the Catalina 10.15.4+ mini-guide. So it's better to either:
    • Use the latest Lilu and WhateverGreen from the "acidanthera" GitHub site or from the OpenCore 0.6.0 ZIP file.
    • Use a USB-C to DisplayPort cable instead of HDMI-to-HDMI.
  • Double check all steps because a small oversight here or there can be significant.

I followed the suggestions above but still had errors somewhere. I ended up following the OC guide and it looks like the install worked!

Hi, would you please help to identify version of Asus Thunderbolt3 EX card and proper firmware to upload? I tried both AlpineRidgeEX3-NVM18-NATA and AlpineRidgeEX3-NVM26-NATA together with SSDT-TBOLT3-RP21-ASUS-TB-EX3.aml and in both cases TB3 card is detected, however any device connected is not seen. Then I burned GC-ALPINE RIDGE-NVM21-V3-NATA.bin for the test, and (despite it now sees two ports), it was able to recognize the TB3 enclosure but device inside it.
I'm running High Sierra on Asus X299 Deluxe. I also configured BIOS per a screenshot. Would you suggest where my mistake is?
Your configuration screenshots look good, but some questions and comments:
  • You're using an Akitio Node Lite that provides external PCIe slots and a DisplayPort connector.
  • What device(s) are installed inside the Node Lite?
  • Is the Thunderbolt header cable connected?
  • Have you tried warm-booting the system with devices pre-connected?

So the only thing different from your "not installing" Designare its the CPU?

These are the BIOS versions:
  • The Test Bench is running F9g (beta BIOS)
  • The Primary System is running F8

Can you please explain? Were you using a different USB SSDT? What is the make/model of your computer case?

Sure! I have a Fractal R6 USB-C case. A (long) while back, you had helped me put together a custom SSDT to enable specific ports. That being said, you can disregard my plea for help. I edited SSDT-UIAC-DESIGNAIRE-Z390-V7.aml in MaciASL and solved the issue on my own.

I'm back in business!

I hate to say this, but perhaps it’s time to consider a fresh install? I would start right away with OpenCore 0.6.0. That mini guide has instructions for Mojave. Just create the OC 0.6.0 EFI folder, copy it to the EFI partition of the Mojave installation flash disk, and run a new install. Be sure to unlock MSR 0xE2 first. Instructions are at the bottom of the OC 0.6.0 mini guide.

@CaseySJ
I came to that conclusion to, and then stumbled on this thread.

So I reformatted my SSD and started with a fresh install. After successfully installing Mojave I...
1. Downloaded newest clover
2. Installed clover with suggested legacy settings
*Install clover in the ESP
*Under boot sectors ----Install boot0af in MBR
*Under clover bios settings----- Install clover EFI 64 bits SATA
*Under UEFI drivers
Installed DataHubDxe-64
Installed FSInject-64
Installed SMCHelper-64
Installed VBoxHfs-64

Installed clover with these settings
Then mounted USB EFI and saved EFI folder to desktop
Then ejected that EFI folder and mounted the hard drive EFI folder
Backup EFI folder then copied usb EFI folder to EFI on hard drive
Eject that EFI folder and reboot without usb stick

Now I am restoring from Time Machine and will repeat the process again. My Boot Drive contains the EFI folder you sent previously, but I replaced the themes folder, because the one you sent me was for Catalina. Not sure if it would have an effect, but I replaced it with the themes folder from my original.
Will keep you updated once Time Machine restore finishes. Thanks for all the advice <3

SOLVED.
Did not like booting with EFI folder you provided.
Went back to Macbook Pro, mounted USB EFI with clover, switched EFI to my original EFI.

Booted Hackintosh with F12 then chose
USB > Clover > SSD
SSD booted Mojave successfully again.

reinstalled regular (non-legacy) clover onto SSD & mounted USB EFI
Copied USB EFI to Desktop
unmounted USB EFI & USB install mojave Disk
Mounted SSD UFI
Replaced SSD UFI with USB UFI on desktop
Rebooted & reconfigured bios preferences to boot SSD as priority.
Everything working & back to normal again :)
