the name big sur
is absurd

i remember when craig said
no we are not merging mac os and ios
yeah right
today
we brought control center to the mac

i understand changes and moving foward

but it doesn’t feel like a desktop os anymore

more like the begining of an hybrid

for those who like it i have no objection, if only we will have nvidia support

but that is gone, now it seems like mac os is the next one in the hit list
awesome job mr cook

keep it up and you will end up driving all your mac users away

mr cook you just destroyed mac os
congratulations
Couldn't agree more. I'm kinda upset by this. If I wanted an iPad I'd freaking buy one. I'm also not happy because it appears that they are going to start pulling the same crap that they do with their phones where they don't give you specifics on the CPU cores and clock speeds. If you look at the screenshot that marko96 posted earlier, you will see how one can come to this conclusion. All it says is 'Apple A12Z Bionic', not something like '2.49Ghz 8-Core Apple A12Z Bionic'.

Does anyone else think this is lame? If they don't tell us the clock speed and core count when we go to buy a new Mac, how does one know if it will run the kind of apps some of us need every day? Such as video editing software or music production software. Some people need serious power and not giving spec details keeps us in the dark. Yeah, we can probably search on some third party site how many cores the Mac we're looking at has, but we shouldn't have to.

They really are just making the Mac a big mobile-like toy now. Windows users already think macOS looks like a toy OS, wait until they see Big Sur. I hope enough people complain to maybe make them rethink the GUI. Good luck with that, though. Doubt Apple cares.

Been using Big Sur every day since developer beta 1 after about 1 week of using Big Sur you will not even notice the minor changes. For those that really care that much, they can stay on Catalina, Mojave, or older.

Software developers will change the way they write their minimum specifications for Mac so you do not have to look up the core count or the speed. The software will say minimum system requirements Apple A12Z bionic or whatever. Windows users really do not give two $hit$ about MacOS actually most of them are afraid of it but all of them know MacOS does not get viruses. I saw more complaints about the removal of 32bit applications then I did from the change from intel. Outside of you and Blue many people here welcome the change.
Mac's do get viruses, just not as many because hackers don't target them because they don't have nearly the market share that Windows PC's have.

Even if I don't need to know how many cores I'm getting, I still think it's the right thing to do to let your customers know what the hell they are buying.

I'm a little disappointed about the switch from Intel, but only because I don't know how well the Apple Sillicon chips will perform in comparison. If they will do great then I welcome the switch. Intel over charges and releases the same chips with minor improvements and pretends like they made a new product. Sometimes they make huge improvements, but for a while now it's been minor. The only thing major thing they've done that I know of is make their 6 core+ CPU's more affordable and appropriate for all use, instead of having workstation grade CPU's available in the 6+ core and a lot less well rounded for all use types. They should have made that possible a long time ago, though, but what the hell do I know?

Everyone has opinions.

But we do

Single core vs Single core. iPhone 11 Pro Max vs my overclocked i9-9900K.

i9-9900K @ 5GHz:

The single-core performance shows that Apple is not far behind Intel in the single-core. The Apple chip is clocked at 2.7 GHz much slower than the 5GHz Intel. The Pro Max uses 6 cores 2 high performance, 4 low performance, add two high-performance cores and increase the clock speed and watch Apple close that gap. Intel is using all high-performance cores and this specific example all cores at 5GHz. Threw software optimization apple has always used hardware more efficiently then windows. Windows will run on just about anything, but it is optimized for nothing, in the near future Mac OS will be optimized for a very limited stack enabling it to perform much better.

If they can only double the multicore score before the end of the year the first MacBook pro will score the same as the existing MacBook Pro.

The lack of users' argument for viruses is old and tired the first time I heard that was 26 years ago when it was actually true. I think a good majority of people today use both MacOS and Windows. IBM uses Macs internally because they are less work to maintain. Hackers like to target companies like IBM.

I know for a fact that Mac's can get viruses because if you know anything about the digital world, you'll know that anything is hackable and breachable, just varying difficulties and time. I know there is people writing viruses for Mac's and I know people are getting them. Just research it. It's possible that many people have one and don't even know it because a lot of Mac users don't run a third party anti-virus which can better detect them. I run Avira anti-virus on my Mac.

Apple wants their new ASi (Apple Silicon) Macs to be faster, cooler and more energy efficient. Now that the newest 21.5" and 27" iMacs are all SSD storage only and no more mechanical drives, macOS Big Sur is going to be really snappy on any new Mac you buy, even the next MacBook 12" laptop. I support people that use older PCs with mechanical drives running Win10. When I open task manager I see the drive almost always maxed out to 100%. Everything is super slow to open. 150 to 200 processes running in task mgr. Slow as molasses.

They way Apple wants to grow the Mac market is to lure people currently using these clunky Win10 laggard PCs (hundreds of millions of users) to buy a new Mac. They may already own an iPhone but guess what ? All the new Big Sur icons and apps look just like they do on their iPhones. They'll even be able to run iOS apps natively on a new ASi Mac. Easy to see what the strategy with Big Sur is. Make everthing familiar and easy to learn for switchers. Then they'll never go back to Windows and suffer through that Windoze 10 angst again.

Here's the newest 27" Intel iMac. You could build a hackintosh with similar specs for less money but you don't get that amazing 5K display. I would value that at least at $500. The new ASi Macs are going to be an even better value and that is how they'll try to win back us hackers that have been building our own "Macs" for years. Just plug in the new iMac and it works, completely silent. You don't have to spend hours installing and configuring Catalina as you would on your hackintosh. Time is money as you know.

You can also still upgrade the RAM yourself to save more money on the total cost. Don't forget the new 1080p web cam built in for your video conferencing. How many 4K or 5K monitors have one of those built in ?

If the new rumored 24" 4K Retina iMac comes out later this year or early next and sells for around $1099 with much better than Intel performance and thermals would you buy one ? It's going to be really interesting to see how good the new ASi Macs turn out to be. Even then, I plan on keeping my Intel machines running macOS as long as is possible.

Are you sure there are viruses out in the wild for macOS? I haven't been able to find any on Google... Please provide links.

Only viruses, please. Not trojans.

Here is what I know if a virus appears for windows Microsoft expects someone else to fix it. If a Virus appears on a Mac apple will plug the hole in the OS to prevent the virus. The real reason script kiddies do not write a virus for the mac is because it is too much work and lack of venerability that windows is full of. Sure it is possible that they have a virus and do not know it but very unlikely.

Windows is a garbage OS in my opinion. I only use it for gaming. If Mac's ever get the kind of game library that's available on Windows and can run the games the way I currently do with a real way to turn mouse acceleration off in macOS besides using the Terminal or SteelSeries ExactMouse Tool, which still won't allow you to adjust the mouse sensitivity slider in macOS without it defaulting back to mouse accel on, I'll drop Windows entirely.

I do understand that gaming is not the focus for Apple and that Mac's aren't built with gaming in mind, but it'd be great if I could ditch Windows. Apple has been putting some effort into Apple Arcade, but that's more casual than the games I'm talking about. I'm talking about big titles.

It's not easy to get virus on Mac because of its own security layers and you need to give software permission to install in system directories even if software stealthy try to install something else. Windows' security is a joke. Virus programmers knows this and they won't waste their time writing virus for Mac.

Agree - Plus with the new security method of a sealed volume in Big Sur, it's not so easy even for legit unsigned third party apps but as they say, anything man made is breakable.
