Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

@CaseySJ Is it actually problematic to enable FileVault? I've disabled it so far, just in case.

** PRE-RELEASE: OpenCore 0.6.0 EFI for Z490 Vision D **
Please do not quote this post in its entirely. Use a link instead.

Each time a new version of OpenCore is released, a new EFI ZIP is added to the build guide in Post #1. Although OpenCore 0.6.0 is not yet official, in an effort to facilitate the update when it does get released, attached is a pre-release version for Z490 Vision D.

This EFI is for beta testing purposes and should be installed into the EFI partition of a USB Flash Drive. It should not be installed in the main macOS SSD.

This EFI contains the following changes:

Bootloader / Kexts:
All of the kexts listed below are RELEASE builds (not DEBUG), but are unofficial builds that are based on all commits as of August 1, 2020.
  • OpenCore 0.6.0 pre-release
  • VirtualSMC 1.1.5 pre-release
  • Lilu 1.4.6 pre-release
  • WhateverGreen 1.4.1 pre-release
  • AppleALC 1.5.1 pre-release
  • NVMeFix 1.0.3 pre-release
config.plist Changes:
  • Misc --> Boot --> Picker Attributes --> 9
  • Misc --> Security --> BootProtect --> Bootstrap
  • ACPI --> SSDT-SBUS-MCHC (Fix AppleSMBus support in macOS)
  • ACPI --> SSDT-GPRW (Disable wake from USB/Bluetooth; wake only with power button) -- Disabled by default
  • ACPI --> Patch --> change Method(GPRW,2,N) to XPRW, pair with SSDT-GPRW.aml -- Disabled by default
  • Kernel --> Patch --> SATA Hot Swap I/O Error Fix (for SATA Hot Plug) -- Disabled by default

How to Use:
  1. Find a USB flash disk with an EFI partition, or format the USB flash disk in Disk Utility with Scheme = GUID Partition Map and Format = MacOS Extended (Journaled).
  2. Mount EFI partition of the USB flash disk.
  3. Download the attached ZIP into the top level of the EFI partition of the USB flash disk. When the file is unzipped, there will be a folder called OC-060-VISION-D-PRE-RELEASE
  4. Rename this folder to EFI, otherwise the system will not boot.
  5. Inside the EFI/OC subfolder are two standard config files:
    • config-AMD-GPU.plist (choose this if using an AMD GPU)
    • config-Intel-iGPU.plist (choose this only if no AMD GPU is present)
  6. Pick one of the files above, rename it to config.plist, and open this config.plist in OpenCore Configurator version 2.7.1.0 or later.
  7. From OpenCore Configurator's File --> Preferences, select Official --> OC 0.6.0 Development Version as shown:
    Screen Shot 2020-08-02 at 5.12.57 AM.pngScreen Shot 2020-08-02 at 5.12.23 AM.png
  8. Click on PlatformInfo --> DataHub - Generic - PlatformNVRAM and copy/paste existing serial numbers and UUID into the fields shown in red.

  9. Save the file.
  10. Reboot and press F12 at the BIOS Splash Screen. When the BIOS Boot Menu (not OpenCore Picker) appears, select the USB flash disk.
  11. Warning: It may be necessary to reset NVRAM one time prior to booting macOS. This can be done by pressing spacebar at the OpenCore Picker and choosing Reset NVRAM. On multi-boot systems, select the default startup disk in System Preferences --> Startup Disk.
  12. At the OpenCore 0.6.0 Picker menu, select and boot the internal macOS disk.

Updates:
  • 2 Aug 2020: Updated config.plist to OC 0.6.0 spec. It may be necessary to Reset NVRAM one time before booting into macOS using the new config.plist. This can be done by pressing spacebar at the OpenCore Picker and choosing Reset NVRAM.

I believe FileVault is functional, but I've not used it myself. Instructions for enabling FileVault are provided in the Dortania guide.

I already tried that once (and it seemed to work without any problems) but decided to keep it disabled after I reinstalled. I'm not quite sure if it's a good idea to enable it.

Well, I'm just a day late and a dollar short!

I've only had the system built less than a week, and everything seems really good so far. Most of my work is cloud/web based, so no real shockers that everything is good on that front.

One issue I've noticed is that waking from sleep causes some very degraded internet connectivity. Rebooting solves this issue, but no amount of use seems to resolve the issue. I'm wondering if this is possibly hardware or software related. I opted for the YOUBO card, because I thought this card was to address the issue. I have no problem purchasing a different BT/WiFi solution if there is one that is more stable.

The BT seems to work flawlessly - computer wakes from my Magic KB and Trackpad :)

For Wifi, turning wifi off/on in the OS doesn't seem to fix the problem either.

In the short term, I suppose I can have my computer never sleep to see if this is cause/effect.

Thanks as always for any suggestions :)

The build guide already includes a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, albeit for iGPU to drive a DP monitor. In your case, you're using the same kind of cable but connecting your AMD GPU (DisplayPort) to a USB-C monitor, effectively using the cable in reverse.

It makes more sense on laptops. In case they're stolen, your data is encrypted.

The first thing to do is uncheck Wake for Network Access and reboot. Then please try sleep/wake again.

That is true, it's much less likely that a desktop gets stolen. On a real Mac, I would definitely activate FileVault though.

Are you using RX 5700 XT?

It seems as if MacOS is struggling to connect to this monitor. Do you have a simple monitor like 1080p or 2560x1440 or even flat screen TV?

Please try using DisplayPort as well.

No.
I am on iGPU HDMI to HDMI config.plist and on my Samsung 49" C49RG9x 5120*1440 monitor.
Let me think on my own. Any idea of course are welcome :)

3840*1080 resolution means the installer is trying to use 1920x540 HiDPI mode. 540 is not tall enough to show the entire "Install macOS Catalina" window. Shouldn't the installer be smart enough to choose 3840x1080 low resolution mode? Well, there's no Display preferences panel in the installer so you need a different method to force a different screen resolution:

Set the display to PBP mode so that it will connect as 2560x1440. Then you should be able to see the entire window.
