Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

Hi guys!

first of all thanks for the great guide and all the additional posts :)

I have two questions. I would like to upgrade my 5-year old music hack (4790k) to this new platform (z490/i9 10900k)

With just one monitor at home and a system used to make music, I wonder if I could avoid purchasing the RX580 for the initial build? I think that hd630 should work alone with the right system id?

question 2: from what I understand the hdmi port on the mobo is not supported but I think I can use the DP port, right?

Hello @LaurentMaldo,

Yes you should be able to install Catalina with just the iGPU (UHD 630) and a USB-C to DisplayPort cable connected to either of the two USB-C/Thunderbolt ports on the rear IO panel.

However, in BIOS we must set Initial Display Output to IGFX ("Auto" might work as well, but it's not recommended).

Thanks a lot for the super fast reply. Turns out to be even more helpful than I expected, because it allowed me to get aware that I had misunderstood the I/O layout at the back of the mobo. I thought that it had a DP « out » port, so I didn’t understand why you mentioned TB. I just read the mobo specs and understand that it’s either the TB ports or the hdmi that is not supported.
As I intend to use both TB ports later, I guess the best option is to stick to the RX580... and to this guide! Thanks!!

Before I jump into the cold water and order the parts for my first new hackintosh since my Sandy Bridge build, i wanted to ask you guys if there would speak anything against Mojave as the OS.

You know, some of us still have to use 32bit Apps (creative suite, etc...)

So, would 10.14 be supported on this Vision D in combination with an i7-10700K?

Good question. Theoretically the procedure in Post #1 should work with Mojave. If you would like a definitive answer, I can attempt a Mojave installation in the next day or two.

Having now been up and running for a day, I have been encountering quite a few panics. These have occurred while multitasking between Chrome and Slack, and once while using Facetime: all of them froze the system and required a forced shutdown.

I've pasted the Apple "Problem Report" from my most recent panic. Would be great to know if anything jumps out here that I could attend to.

This particular crash appears to be from Chrome. If you uninstall it, does the system become stable? We can use Safari and Firefox in the meantime.

That would be very helpful to me personnally, and I think others can benefit from your findings, too.

In fact I‘m still a little hesitant and also thought of just buying z390designare and the older i7 . But it would be roughly the same price, so I‘d rather go for comet lake...

CaseySJ Thank you. I previously posted with an EFI I put together from various contributors. It worked but I had problems with USB ejections from sleep and a problem with the second DP on the Vega 64. I installed yours instead and everthing absolutely works.

One question, the picker icons are enormous on my 4k monitor. If I switch to text, the are also very large. I have tried everthing the get a higher resolution. Once booted int windows or macOS everthing is normal. Any suggestions? I only started playing with OC last week so I have a lot to learn yet.

Good thing I checked -- after 3 hours I am still unable to start the Mojave 10.14.6 installer on Z490 Vision D with OpenCore. I've tried a number of experiments, but all have failed. It's possible I'm missing something straightforward, but it's almost like looking for a needle in a haystack of possibilities.

If you need to build a Mojave system quickly, I would recommend a Z390 system at this time.
