[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Hello,

My computer for some reason doesn’t boot anymore. The drive is there but it goes into the bios right away. I wonder what it could be. Drive damaged ? Is there a tool I can run?
Are you using Clover or OpenCore?

Do you have a USB install/boot disk or a full bootable backup? If so, you can connect either of those and press F12 during BIOS splash screen, choose the external disk, then at the Clover or OpenCore boot menu, select the internal macOS SSD to boot.

Then Mount EFI partition of the macOS SSD and repair any issues that might exist with Clover or OpenCore. You may also compress and upload the EFI folder, but remove serial numbers from SMBIOS or PlatformInfo section of config.plist prior to posting.

Been scouring this thread for an answer but can’t find it.

If I’m using the flashed/modified on-board Thunderbolt on my Designare, what files should I have in my ACPI/Patched folder in Clover?

As far as I can understand, I should replace SSDT-DTPG, but do I just ADD the TBOLT3-RP05... file and KEEP the older/original SSDT Thunderbolt 3 file for hotplug etc, or remove it?
  • Keep SSDT-DTPG
    • If there's another SSDT-DTPG in Thunderbolt DROM Micro Guide you may keep original or use the new; they should be the same, however
  • Remove original Thunderbolt SSDT (SSDT-Z390-DESIGNARE-TB3HP-V4)

Hi,
i am planning to install macOS Catalina 10.15.5 by adding a second apfs Volume to my macOS Mojave system drive. I read your detailed (as usual) mini-guide for Fresh Installation of Catalina 10.15.4 and Newer and I have some questions to ask before starting to install:
- Is it better to update the UEFI firmware (currently, on my system I have v. 7) to the latest version available (9b) before starting to unlock the MSR 0xE2 register?
- In the event that, during CFG unlock procedure, something goes wrong corrupting the UEFI firmware, it is always possible to restore it in some way?
- Currently I have the macOS Mojave drive in a multiboot system with Win10 and Ubuntu 18.04 on separate drives. Could the MSR 0xE2 unlock register create problems for a multiboot configuration and its update?
- Following your guide I created the Unlock-MSR-E2 USB installer. At the grub> prompt, running the setup_var_3 0x5C1 command I have the following output:

Am I in the right situation to run the setup_var_3 0x5C1 0x0 command to unlock the MSR 0xE2 register?
Thanks in advance for Your help

Hello @SardusX

To answer your questions:
  • Updating UEFI firmware to F9b is not required, but it is a good idea.
  • Nothing will go wrong when you type setup_var_3 0x5c1 0, but in the event that something does go awry, one can re-flash the firmware from BIOS Setup.
  • Unlocking MSR 0xE2 will have no adverse effect on Windows or Linux. I speak from experience.
  • The output in the screenshot is correct.

Wonderful -- are you using modified NVM33 or Elias' new NVM50 that was adapted from the Z490 Vision D?
i flashed it with DESIGNARE-Z390-NVM33-Elias64Fr.bin - is that the best choice?

i used a modded programmer instead of a raspberry pi. Seemed to work like a charm! i haven’t even plugged in a tbolt device yet to test. Going to check it out today. Looking forward to the glory.

Thanks for your help
  • Clock issue: It seems that you are right! I didn't suspect the motherboard first since it is a new one. I verified in the BIOS and the time was frozen. I changed the battery and now the time is moving normally!
  • WiFi/Bluetooth issue: I tried both, same problem, and I don't think it is signal strength issue since it is very random, it can move from 10 to 150M just after a restart without changing anything, and the problem starts again after a sleep!

any idea about the WiFi/Bluetooth issue ?

Hello @SardusX
Code:
setup_var_3 0x5C1 0x0

Thanks for Your reply,
sorry, let me be sure I understand correctly,
Code:
setup_var_3 0x5C1 0
it's the same of
Code:
setup_var_3 0x5C1 0x0
to unlock the MSR 0xE2 register?

Just wanted to double check - has everyone lost the onboard HDMI after 10.15.5 update? If anyone has anymore info or clues about this I'd love to hear it. Otherwise it's back to 10.15.3 for me...

I can also confirm that 10.15.3 isn't working with WEG 1.4.

CaseySJ has mentioned that HDMI doesn't work in 10.15.5, can't find the particular post though.

Hi and honestly thanks for the fantastic work on Thunderbolt.

Sorry for highjacking the thread, I understand my board is different, yet I'm using an SSDT from your repository and need some help.

My board is an ASUS X99a-ii, with a Thunderbolt EX3 plugged in SB slot 2(I have a RAID card and a Blackmagic mini monitor occupying the rest of the slots and this seems to be the only combination that actually works).

Using the TbtOnPch-Asus-Z370-A-Prime-II SSDT from the repo I get a full tree in IOReg (or possibly a longer tree than I should as the card has only one TB port) plus Thunderbolt Bus and the card shows up in PCI section of System Information.

I'm having trouble doing the patches in Clover. could you have a look at my DSDT and let me know how I can convert TINI to INI as I have no clue how to turn it into HEX? I also saw there is a _E10 method under GPE, can I use the same HEX values as in the X99 Deluxe II SSDT in the repo?

By the way, I tried using that SSDT but get no TB Bus and card doesn't show up in PCI section.

Unfortunately right now I have only the following to play with:
TB3-TB2 adapter plus BMD Intensity Shuttle
TB3-TB2-FW800 adapters plus FW800 HDD
DP from GPU to EX3, then TB3 to DP to monitor

None of them show up in IOReg, but then again they don't show up in windows either so I wonder if it's a card issue. In 2 days I'll have a TB2 dock to play with and will try again. I wonder if my BIOS settings are correct, I'll post a pic if it's useful.

I'm attaching IOReg screenshots with and without SSDT, DSDT plus SSDT.

Thanks!
