[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

As I recall, when multiple GPUs are present in a system, Adobe applications choose the GPU whose name appears first when sorted alphabetically. By default, the GPU names are:
  • Intel UHD 630
  • Radeon RX 580
Adobe apps on Mac use both GPUs. Radeon will be used for transform, colorspace conversion, accelerated effects etc and quick sync IGPU will be used for encoding. QS yields better quality than VCE in most cases.

did not work, but I put a usb in - and it reads it.
after reboot, the domain uuid changed for tb3 - is that expected?
The device tree will be on the left side of IORegistryExplorer. Here's my generic USB-C hub attached to SSP2. This device is not advertised as being Mac-compatible (it was purchased for a Windows laptop) but everything works except HDMI port. It's probably using an incompatible video chip.

An update on this issue of connecting HDMI monitor via a USB-C hub:
  • After setting ig-platform-id to 0x3E9B0007 (instead of 0x3E980003) and rebooting, the HDMI port does in fact work when the USB-C dock is connected to one of the Thunderbolt ports.

Dropping into this thread to say hello and thank you. I've got my new i9 9900k based machine up and running, and it appears to be stable! I successfully used unibeast, clover, and the files from the catalina micro-guide in this thread to install MacOS. I even used the migration assistant to restore my user profile, apps and files from a timemachine backup. Magic!

My semi-ancient MOTU828x audio interface is successfully running over thunderbolt 2 (with adapter). I'm not sure this is 100% reliable at the moment, I have three issues:
1- When I came to my desk this morning, the interface had disconnected and I needed to reboot to get MacOS to recognise it. The machine did not sleep overnight, so I'm unsure what caused this to happen.
2- When I installed the fenvi wifi adapter, it seemed to cause the thunderbolt interface to disappear - it wasn't detected under PCI devices in the system report. I reseated the card, checked the BIOS settings and on reboot it was detected again. I'll keep an eye on this.
3- hot plugging the MOTU doesn't work, it seems it must be connected on boot to be detected by MacOS. Maybe there's something in this thread I missed about how to get hotplug running?

Hey everyone,

Had some questions, I wanted to see if anyone has run into similar issues.
Since updating to 10.15.5 and the supplemental update that came shortly after it I have been experiencing random freezes or lags on my computer.
EX. I will be opening safari or switching tabs and computer lags and shows color wheel and color wheel freezes and the computer doesn't respond for 14-20 seconds and then catches up.

This was not something that was happening prior. Not sure if it's due to the update of macOS or maybe due to the update of kexts prior to doing update?
Those are the only 2 items that changed from when I was running with no issues.

Has anyone else experienced similar behaviors?

Hello @malarky,

Glad to hear it and welcome to the forum. Good job gathering all the needed information from a variety of posts.

Regarding the MOTU 828x with TB3-to-TB2 adapter, let's see if other MOTU (or even UAD) owners can offer some advice. Some folks have reported improved Thunderbolt performance by setting BIOS --> Thunderbolt --> Thunderbolt Boot Support to Boot Once.

Thunderbolt hot plug should work as long as the CLOVER/ACPI/patched folder contains both of these files:
  • SSDT-Z390-DESIGNARE-TB3HP-V4.aml
  • SSDT-DTPG.aml
Do you have other Thunderbolt devices with which to test hot plug?

I have not experienced this myself (on 3 systems that have been updated), but if you still have the full bootable backup from before the update, double-check if these issues are present there.

Hi all,

Been a little while since I've hopped on the thread.

I'm back on Mojave and pretty stable these days - no crashing or system/screen freezes at all, but I'm having an issue every once in a while where all my USB ports stop working randomly. I originally tried USBInjectall 0.7.5 but that gave me no working USB at all on Mojave, so I went back to 0.7.3. Not sure if this is a thing or not, or if anyone has an easy fix for this or not, but I thought I'd check. Anyone have a suggestion or fix? Pretty sure everything else is in order in my EFI folder.

My UAD Apollo audio is a lot better also, but I get the dreaded crackling every now and then so I'm planning to flash my thunderbolt like some of you already have. Been putting that off for too long, and it seems that almost all of you are getting improved results by doing so. Amazing that this is possible, as it seems pretty necessary for me now.

I been having a similar issue on my few week old dual boot build. I just checked and have been using USBinjectall 0.7.1. I'm on mojave as well. I've been making a list of troubleshooting steps I've done and MAYBE its finally stable but I'm hesitant to post anything until I've had a few long working days without any USB drops. If you poke around this thread its definitely an issue that several people are having. I will certainly chime in if I've found a definitive culprit/fix. I will share that on my system:

-the problem seems to happen soon after rebooting after booting to windows. Then at random times after that.

-After a USB failure and reboot My turbo mouse settings get lost until a few seconds after login.

-I did go through the alternate port enumeration method and it didn't help.

-it seemed like it might be chrome related and I found this thread:

My latest steps have been to stop using chrome and unplug my Fenvi BT/wireless card from the internal port. Sometimes it seems to help if I switch off my PS and let the MB fully power down before restarting after a USB drop. Its a frustrating goose chase and the jury is still out on the results.

Do you have a fenvi BT card plugged into a board usb header?
Are you dual booting?
Do you use chrome?

Best,
B

I'm going to try replace the cooling (Alphacool) for another one..Corsair or NZXT?????Any suggestion??
They are both good choices. Whichever one you choose, check for the following when you receive it:
  • Does it have thermal paste preapplied on the CPU block?
  • If so, do not apply any additional paste.
  • NZXT Kraken AIOs come with thermal paste already applied. Not sure about Corsair.
  • You may also (a) completely remove existing thermal paste and (b) apply a single pea-sized drop of a high quality paste in the center of the CPU. Again, this is optional.

Thanks for the reply.

  • Not a chrome user, but have it open on some occasions. Doesn't seem related to me, as I get the USB failures when only using a DAW or video app, or even just in finder.
  • Using the FENVI card now, same issue when I was using a generic one also though. I have it plugged into the USB board header as per the guide.
  • I rolled back from 0.7.3 to 0.7.1 and so far it's been good, but it's only been 6 hours or so now....
  • I'm not dual booting at all/ever.
  • I've been screen sharing in when it happens and the computer works fine with a remote mouse/keyboard through screen share. All USB goes bye-bye (2.0/3.0 etc)
  • I noticed that when I use version 0.7.5 I get all USB ports EXCEPT for the USB 2.0 ports - which makes my bluetooth on the FENVI not work. Not sure why it doesn't work under Mojave - but it worked on Catalina fine.

Very Interesting... I noticed the binoculars of remote sharing on in my menubar so I turned that off. Might be another clue. Same here, when it happens my system is ticking away fine but local USB is gone. It also f*(cks up my win exfat drives when they get abruptly disconnected. Please keep me/us posted.
