Hey,

Did anyone test out 128GB DDR4 RAM at 3200 MHz or higher on Z490 motherboard with i9-10900K yet? I saw on many forums that the 10900K only supports 128GB of RAM at 2666 MHz and it was not possible on Z390 Motherboards and I am wondering if it will be possible on Z490. I am planning to buy 64 GB kit (2 × 32GB) 3200 MHz for now so that I can get 64 GB more in the future to max out to 128GB for my Asus ProArt Z490 Creator + i9-10900K build. So wondering if anyone tried out yet and if it is possible?

2019 iMac can use full 128GB with 32GB DDR4 per stick; but it uses 2666 MHz DDR4 RAM. So, I am looking for something concrete, definite answer who has tried out 128GB DDR4 RAM with Z490 motherboard already. Otherwise, I have 2 options at the moment:
i) 32GB 2933MHz DDR4 CL14 with 128GB in mind;
ii) 16GB 3600MHz DDR with maxing out at 64GB

Thank you!

Not sure why you got the impression that 128GB RAM is not possible on Z390 motherboards, as an updated BIOS (like F6 on my Z390 Designare) is all that is needed for the motherboard to support 32GB DDR4 RAM sticks (and with 4 such sticks there will be 128GB RAM).

Or are you saying that MacOS does not work with 128GB RAM on Z390 motherboards?

Hey @Jamesbond007, I saw lots of people talked about trying to use 128GB RAM on Z390 motherboards and could not able to do so. So I was wondering if anyone tried that on Z490 motherboards already. It would give me some peace of mind knowing it is possible as I want to get 32GB DDR4 RAM sticks for my Asus ProArt Z490 Creator + i9-10900K build.

iMac 2019 can use 32GB RAM sticks up to 128GB; so there should not be any issue from MacOS side; is not it?

The only other reason I can think of for a Z390 motherboard to not work with 128GB RAM (other than the BIOS not being updated) is related to the CPU. According to Intel's specifications, i3 CPUs (8th and 9th generation) and lower can only support 64GB RAM while i5/i7/i9 CPUs can support 128GB RAM.

Z490 motherboards and the corresponding CPUs are supposed to support 128GB RAM out of the box.

Hey @Jamesbond007, what about the speed of the RAM? 2019 iMac can use full 128GB with 32GB DDR4 per stick; but it uses 2666 MHz DDR4 RAM. i9-10900K supports 2933 MHz DDR4 RAM, so do you think I should get 32GB DDR4 at 2933 MHz given I want to use full 128GB or using DDR4 3200/3600 MHz should be fine even if I max out to 128GB?

Any succes yet? im planning to build gigabyte vision d z490 + i9 + 128gb 3200 MHz. The ram that i want to buy is: G.Skill DDR4 Ripjaws-V 2x32GB 3200Mhz. thanks!

You should be able to use G.Skill DDR4 Ripjaws-V 2x32GB 3200Mhz without any issue in your build. I have seen few to do it already.
