i9-10900K Build Discussion

Hey @pastrychef, I am having hard time in deciding; can you help me to choose. I want to use this build purely for Warstation and video production purpose. And I am not a fan of Windows and wanna stick with Mac OS but can't afford Mac Pro, the only workstation type I like as it is customizable. So I have been reading and researching on lots of posts and X299 build with i9 X series processor is looking really tempting to me for this build. Do you think I will better off performance wise if I choose X-299 + i9 X combo over Z490 + i9 K? My main concern is stability and video production and rendering performance. Sorry if the message is long but I am thinking to spend a bit more if I get the right build for the purpose.

I guess it really depends on how many cores you really need. If you only need 10 cores, I think that the Z490+i9-10900K would be easier to get running on macOS and easier to update and maintain. If you need more than 10 cores, your only choice is to go X299 right now.

I tought there would be other massive benefits for using workstation focused motherboard and processor and GPU as their sole existance is for professional purpose. If the performance is only down to number of cores, I think 10 cores will be enough for me.

Well, you get a lot more PCI-e lanes if you go with X299, but, realistically, how many PCI-e cards are you going to be installing??

I don't think I will use more than 2 GPU in the long run anyway

Most normal users don't need all the PCI-e lanes from X299. All of my builds have been mATX and I've never used all the PCI-e slots.

Yeah, in that case I think going for Z490 + i9 K will be best suited for my build. Thanks @pastrychef for helping me to breakdown and choose

Hello, I am testing a Core i5 10400 + Asrock Z490 Gaming 4 (a low budget just in case) and I could enter the Installation with Catalina... in a few hours I will tell you if it is working my Hackintosh with 10gen processsor but until now is working... by the way I had to use OpenCore (clover doesn't work) and FakeCPU to make the installation work...

Ok my test is finally a success!!!!!, I could make it work my new Hackintosh 10 gen but it was a bit difficult but is working with my Core i5 10400 and a Asrock z490 Phantom Gaming 4, my low budget build for testing:

  • Audio ALCS1200A, I could find only info for ALCS12200A because people are using more pros mobos but with a few modifications is working.
  • USB with USB Patch, I will make the SSDT later, this maybe is because I want to use this EFI with another mobo in the future.
  • Shutdown/Restart, at the beginning the machine could not restart or turn off, but right now is working perfect.
  • Headless UHD 630, it was a bit demanding but Hackintool was a great help.
  • X86PlatformPlugin loaded, with that it is not neccesary anymore to fake the cpu.
  • Radeon RX 570 8GB, I will test later with my Radeon VII.
  • LAN i219V11, Working with the lastest IntelMausi kext.
I am making test but until now is working just perfect, I ordered a Core i9 10900K and a better motherboard to make the instalation there, but I am happy I could make it work. I hope Clover would have better support, for the options you can access from the main clover screen I think is really useful, with OpenCore you have to restart for every change that makes in my opinion more dificult for testing... but is working is at the end is all that matters...

That is awesome @Raftrix86. Please see if you are getting full performance like on Mac devices. Well my main objective is getting full performance and I am planning to build in the second week of June. Till then will keep planning the components. Also are you using water cooler? For i9-10900K needs to use 360mm AIO water cooler that does not need to use the USB header connector in the motherboard. There seem to have issue when if the AIO water cooler is connected to the USB header connector in the motherboard.

Hey @pastrychef and @Raftrix86, so Z490 and i9-10900K also can use 4 x DIMM, Max. 128GB, DDR4. I know that Z390 had issue of using 128GB ram at full capacity. Do you guys think or know if the same issue will exist with Z490 as well?
