Hello! I have had a lot of issues with trying to install Catalina from the start, but I eventually got the boot drive created (using UniBeast 10.1.0) and booted up the drive and then tried to load into the Catalina installer, and it continually gives me the apfs_module_start: 1689 error and will not load any further. I have an MSI Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon mb with an Intel i9-9900KF cpu, and I read that a lot of z390's don't play nicely with macOS Catalina, and I have tried to get it to work with no luck. After many many hours of tinkering and searching through every single thread I could find on here relating to the issue and trying numerous different EFI folders, changes to the config.plist, kexts, and just about everything else in between, I still cannot get it to work. I have now gotten it to give me a screen saying "SMCSuperIO" after the same 1689 error line, but it still does not boot. I have tried every solution I can think of and am here now to ask for help. I have attached a screenshot of the current screen it is giving me, and a copy of the 3 separate EFI files that I have tried (they're all in the one EFI's.zip folder), modified, and changed. Any ideas on what to try next to fix this issue? Thanks in advance!

Hmm an MSI Z390 motherboard I see. Okay let's try a minimal EFI folder. Try it out and see if it boots.

Thanks for the quick reply GhostRaiderMX! I tried the EFI file that you attached with no luck. I would put a screenshot of the screen it gave me, but it is no different than the one I posted before. It did the same exact thing unfortunately. I did want to add in that I do have an Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS DirectX 10 also installed in the system but that it does not have anything hooked up to the monitor, only the RX 570 is connected to the monitor. Any other suggestions?

Go into bios and disable SuperIO/Serial Ports.

Gigamaxx, I double checked in my bios settings, and all of my SuperIO/Serial Ports are disabled and have been the whole time. Is there anything else that you think it could be?

I tried changing/enabling and disabling every setting I thought would help in the clover boot loader screen before I selected the Catalina drive to boot into as well, and no luck. Is it possible that it could be an issue caused by having the second graphics card in my machine, even if it is not plugged into the monitor? I would rather not take the card out if you don't think it will change anything.

Won’t hurt to try. MacOS Catalina has s not like older versions like ElCapitan and Sierra that needed a IGPU or helper card for AMD Graphics.

Okay, I removed the NVidia graphics card and tried again, but the result was the same. I don't think this has anything to do with it, but it's at least worth mentioning that my system also has 2 additional ssd's in it besides the one that I want to run MacOS on. One is my m.2 sata that runs Windows 10 on it and the other is a 2.5mm ssd drive that is hooked up to a regular sata port on my mb and is partitioned to be mostly extra storage for windows, but the other partition runs a Debian Linux distribution on it. I don't think that the issue is that Clover is conflicting with the GRUB boot loader that the Linux drive is running since I do not load anything from that drive when trying to boot into Catalina. Just thought I would throw this out there in case you know of some conflict that might create that I am unaware of. As for the graphic cards however, nothing changed when I took out the other graphics card, same error message as before came up.
