I plan to install Mojave on new drive and change the video card from a 8800 to a 650ti. Do I need a newly modified DSDT for this hardware change?

any changes you make in your bios or add/remove hardware, then yes, you will need to extract and compile a new DSDT

however, most desktop's don't really require a DSDT

So to be sure, If I change my BIOS by overclocking my processor I need to get a newly extracted and “Modified” DSDT. If I change my video card from a Nvidia 8800gtx to a gtx650 I need to get a newly extracted and Modified DSDT.
But I really shouldn’t worry because my Desktop (G31M-ES2L) may not need a DSDT?
Now I am really confused, this system would not work properly without a properly edited DSDT previously. I could not get all the hardware functionality without it.
I was just wondering because Everything in High Sierra is working including messages and FaceTime because of the edits to my DSDT.
Guess I will go with your suggestions since nobody else has supplied an answer and you are a MOD. Thanks!

mostly DSDT's are required on laptop's

not much call for them to be used on a desktop, as some hotpatch files can do the job

but yes, any bios changes, any hardware changes would normally mean re extract of BIOS and then de-compiled and then re patched

just out of interest, what patches did you do in your DSDT?

I don't recall exactly which patches/changes were applied as I had someone else do that. I REALLY don't know enough of that specific area of programming to deal with it but I am attempting to learn. Just not there yet. I do know that I could not get my messages or FaceTime to work until I had a change in my DSDT to make the AR8131 be built in rather than PCI interface. That made the difference.
Thanks again!

DSDT edits are obsolete. Even laptops should only use SSDTs, at this point. I upgraded a Z67 system to High Sierra recently, and I figured it was old enough that I needed to still use the modified DSDT from the database here. It took a whole day before I figured out that deleting it was necessary to get the sound working.

I believe that you are right about what you suggest about DSDT’s and newer systems, especially with the usage of UEFI bios instead of the legacy bios. The issue that I am facing is that I have 2 very old systems (G31M and a P35 chipsets, LGA775 , NON-UEFI) running High Sierra and I need to get them both bumped up to Mojave to get at least another year or two out of them. They both are used for Photoshop editing. Light duty stuff. I know that no matter what I did I could not get them up and running 100% properly without DSDT edits.
I also, like you have a slightly more recent setup that has no problems running without a DSDT (Z77 chipset) and the only thing that I did with it was mod the bios so that I could use NVME drives on it. That was easy. It runs Mojave fine.

I thank you for your insight and suggestion about using a SSDT, as I feel that it will be nice on my next build (Z390 + I9-9900KS)
Waiting on DunePro case to get here, and to figure out what video card to get. (Radeon VII or Vega 64)
Hopefully I can get a proper SSDT for it.

Oh, well, Mojave dropped support for older CPUs like Core 2. Sorry. I believe it's because the graphics drivers for Metal use SSE 4.2.

edited to add: I did one more Google search- it's just the AMD ones. So you could maybe do it with a still-supported Nvidia card like GT740. You can do a search for the com.apple.telemetry.plugin hack.

I’m using a 650gtx on the oldest one and 770gtx on the other two currently and there should be no problems with support as they are Metal capable. It is my understanding that they both will work in Catalina as well with the “inject Nvidia “ in the clover plist. There’s a list here: https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...-of-desktop-cards-with-native-support.283700/
That lists pretty much the supported cards. Always check the cards chipset because some of the Nvidia cards in the 6 and 7 hundred series are not Kepler cards I checked them at gpuzoo.com before I bought them. Only Kepler chipset (Nvidia) cards are supported natively. AMD enjoys a large number of cards supported natively. I just could not get the AMD cards to work right in the older systems. The fans would not run at boot or even afterwards, two different cards on two different boards. Worked fine on Z77 board so I don’t know what that’s all about.

I did not see where SSE4.2 was needed only 4.1. Is that an AMD thing only?
i’m Running a Xeon X3360 on the G31m box and a q9650 on the P35.

Ok ... got the info on the plugin hack. Thanks!
