[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

If the new "partition" is also going to be an APFS filesystem then it's better to select the "Container Disk" and choose Edit --> Add APFS Volume. It will mount as another disk and can be backed up separately. The nice thing about APFS Volumes is that they can grow dynamically as space is needed. So on your 1TB NVMe SSD, for example, it's not necessary to chop it into fixed-size partitions. Instead, create another APFS Volume and give it an initial size and optionally a maximum size. This is the most efficient way to use up the large disk.

If a physical disk (1TB NVMe SSD) has multiple APFS Volumes and one of those volumes is the boot volume, then to either (a) restore the boot volume from a backup or (b) erase and reinstall macOS on the boot volume, you would only select the boot volume.

To restore from a backup:
  • Boot from backup disk
  • Run Carbon Copy Cloner
  • CCC will show all of the volumes you created on the NVMe SSD. These will appear on the left sidebar of CCC.
  • Select the boot volume on the Backup disk as the SOURCE
  • Select the boot volume on the original disk as the DESTINATION
  • CCC will then restore the selected volume from Backup disk to original disk.
To erase and reinstall macOS:
  • After launching macOS Installer, run Disk Utility from within the Installer
  • Select just the boot volume name and click Erase.
    • Only 2 options will be shown:
      • Name
      • Format
  • Click "Erase" to erase just the selected volume.
  • Then install macOS on that volume

Amazing, thank you. Will create an APFS volume which thanks to you, I can now even backup separately externally via TimeMachine as it's considered a 'separate' drive!

Hello @Rashed97,

Have you seen the DRM compatibility chart on WhateverGreen GitHub site (click here)?

Thunderbolt (including hot plug) works simply by following the build guide. If you see Thunderbolt 3 Experiences in Post #1 you'll find a large list of compatible devices. But if you need to use one of the features or devices listed here, then flashing Thunderbolt firmware is currently the only viable solution.
Yup, I'm using the configuration on the second row, iMac19,1 with shikigva=208, but no dice.

And thanks for the update on thunderbolt. I'll keep it in mind if I need those features.

@CaseySJ - quick question... you also have the K1 keyboard connected to bluetooth on below build:

i9 9900K, z390 designare, rx 5700 xt?

I went back to your NDK opencore 0.5.7 stock build (https://www.tonymacx86.com/attachments/ndk-opencore-0-5-7-for-designare-z390-nvram-zip.460848/) and replaced my EFI folder, but even then, I am not able to connect via Bluetooth.

I wouldn't think it would be the fenvi but if that is our only difference, I guess that might somehow be the culprit.

Still waiting for the fenvi 919, but thought I’d try anything else before it gets here

I had the low power USB problem once more(500 mA max current for charging). After unplugging and keeping the power button pressed for 30 secs, it was not fixed. Still 500 mA. I then chose restore defaults in the BIOS, rebooted to BIOS, loaded my normal MacOS BIOS settings, rebooted to Clover and now I am stuck when booting MacOS(Mojave, to be exact). -v shows it stalls at End Randomseed +++++

To my dismay, my backup doesn't boot either, even when I use the Clover install on that disk to boot from.

Windows boots (and works) when started from Clover, or from its own boot partition.

I reset CMOS by shorting the 2 pins with a screwdriver, but that didn't help either. Or do I need to remove the battery too?

Any ideas how to fix this would be much appreciated.
  • Was MSR 0xE2 unlocked before? It may have gotten re-locked after CMOS Reset.
  • Because you're on Mojave, which memory UEFI driver are you using?

Does Netflix work under Chrome and/or FireFox?

Those entries add information to System Information --> PCI. They will not affect Messages or FaceTime. The OCD in me has to point out that it's "Messages" in macOS and "iMessage" in iOS.

If there's no en0 in System Information --> Network, then try deleting the network preferences file and rebooting. The file is:
  • /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist

Yeah the nomenclature is all out of whack - the app is called Messages in both macOS and iOS, but in iOS Settings>Messages and macOS Messages>Preferences, the service (though not referred to as a service by name) is called iMessage. I've seen reference to some Library/Preferences files with the identifier of "iChat" too, but I can't find those on my machine.

As it turns out, I had to call Apple, and they let me know my account was flagged for spam (seemingly out of the blue, with curious timing with regard to updating OC). Editing those entries had nothing to do with it, and I suspect that restoring them to the version you posted in the mini-guide won't affect Messages or FaceTime, just as you say.

So are those entries cosmetic, or do they serve an important function? I take it the answer to that question will also answer why we now have USB controller, Network controller, Audio device, and Display controller in addition to Ethernet controller.

The keyboard should connect to any compatible Bluetooth 4.x/5.x module including the Fenvi FV-HB1200. Have you tried:
  • CMOS Reset
    • Then re-configure BIOS parameters again starting with Load Optimized Defaults (this is important).
    • Re-unlock MSR 0xE2 if it was previously unlocked.
  • At Clover Boot Menu, press F11 to clear NVRAM. If using OpenCore, select appropriate option from the Picker.
  • Ensure that USB port HS14 is disabled (i.e. does not appear in IORegistryExplorer).
  • Post screenshot of HS11/HS12 fully expanded in IORegistryExplorer.
  • If using a USB splitter on F_USB, remove splitter and connect FV-HB1200 directly.
  • Try installing firmware v3.7 on the K1 Keyboard (needs Windows) by clicking here. This might also accomplish a complete internal reset.

Hey all.

Taking a poll - how many of you are successfully using Catalina on the Designare with a >/= 4K monitor on any dedicated graphics card without any system freezing or crashing? As in, you’ve never had any issues at all.

I have two of these machines, same setup - one runs two ViewSonic 4k panels over DisplayPort, and the other runs one LG 5k2k over DisplayPort (each directly from the RX580). Neither has ever frozen or crashed on me at all.

Good to know.

They're cosmetic on Hacks and on real Macs, but on real Macs the list can be more comprehensive.

yeah I have done all of that.
Below is my ioRegistryExplorer - I only show HS11 - no HS12.

Bluetooth and Wifi are working just from HS11 so I do not think HS12 was needed
