[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

@CaseySJ

Still getting some kernel Panics. I set the Catalina USB boot drive to the same Product ID as my former Mojave Z370 Aorus Gigabyte Gaming 7: iMac, 14,2. A few hours ago it would boot up with half of the log logistics that I'm showing here And then it would just go all black.. Progress maybe to a full stop of log/commands ending with ..

BSD process name corresponding to correct thread: killall

Hello @karambit,

Your first photo is a reasonable 745 KB, but the second is a huge 12 MB. During this time when residential networks are being clogged we should try to economize on the size of files. A number of users are unable to connect to TonyMac presumably because one or more gateways along the route are being clogged.

Can you please remove or resize the second photo?

  • Are you migrating Mojave 10.14.3 from a Gigabyte Z370 Gaming 7 to Catalina 10.15.4 on Designare Z390?
  • In other words, is Mojave 10.14.3 already running on Designare Z390?
  • Have you considered doing a fresh installation of Catalina 10.15.4 on Designare Z390 and then:
    • Copying Documents/Downloads/Media files to the new system.
    • Reinstalling your apps directly on the new system (and entering license codes for them).
    • If you do a fresh install, you can switch to SMBIOS iMac19,1
    • If you are currently using iMac14,2 and you want to move to iMac19,1 in the near future, you will have to re-license the apps anyway.
    • Do you have a lot of apps that would need to be re-licensed?

Sorry Casey, but I had my phone stolen and this is a backup shitty 10 year old samsung so hard to get a reliable pic, unlike my sony Xperia XZ premium.
I have a Canon eos t1 rebel that I haven't used in a while..Reasons: Phone lol ..Well the battery was dead. In order to bring this attention asap I cropped and zoomed BUT it only showed 4mb size.

I always keep my photos to 1-3mb. As I frequent dozens of forums of all types of interests. Been building high-end gaming and video/photo editing computers since 2004.

First photo of this size I have ever uploaded and by accident.

Yes to bullet point #2
Bullet point 3.5 - Final cut pro, Motion, Logic, Compressor and a couple more from the Apple package.
You highly recommend for an abundance of reasons, very well then.

Please forgive my ignorance but is there a re-licensing fee or just a request and re-install ?

Is there any reason to leave the boot test USB in during the final steps?

Thanks for removing the big file! Much appreciated.

The very nice thing about apps purchased from the Mac App Store is that they do not need to re-licensed! We only have to download them again from the App Store.

So I think the best long-term option is:
  • Follow the Catalina 10.15.4 fresh installation guideon an empty NVMe SSD.
    • We shouldn't delete the existing Mojave SSD so a new or empty NVMe SSD should be used.
  • This will give you the best reliability.
  • It will also let you retire the old iMac14,2 SMBIOS and cleanly switch to the new iMac19,1 SMBIOS.
  • It should also be a relatively smooth experience. I think we are seeing too many problems with the current approach of migrating from 10.14.3 to 10.15.4. So it should be a smooth experience to install Catalina 10.15.4 directly on a new or empty NVMe SSD.
  • However, you will need to download the full Catalina 10.15.4 install package (8.6 GB).
If you have any problems or questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks. I tried for months with Catalina, could not solve my system freeze ups with a 580 or a 5700 xt on this hack. My MacBook runs fine, and so does Mojave on this hack. It’s a mystery for me so far.
Have you tried Catalina on just the iGPU? This would rule out any other components?

Thanks Casey,

I have quite a few NVMe drives around so no problem with that.
Your experience here and other members is invaluable to say the least. I was sooo thinking that this upgrade method is just asking for glitches and No Joy lol

Thanks for Verifying the Re-install answer.
I contributed $10.00 here just yesterday and wonder if it shows anywhere in our account? I love Final Cut and Logic so will do whatever it takes to keep this forum alive and pumping

Thanks for the feedback. I used a DP port successfully yesterday on my PowerColor Red Dragon 5700XT. Please try each of the DP ports to see which one(s) work. I'll do the same with my PowerColor.

Also please try enabling WhateverGreen (just remove the -wegoff Boot Argument) to see if all video ports come back and performance is still good.
I don’t use WEG at all. Instead I use pike R black screen patch in Clover. Maybe that patch will work for 5700, also for enabling all the ports.

@jaymonkey reported the same findings. So I'm curious to see if anyone finds a real-world application or task that benefits from the kext/SSDT.
Radeon booster results with apps and GB on RadeonVII 10.5.4
Tested with WEG enabled and shikigva=80. No changes to config other than adding kext/ssdt. Netflix/safari and prime/chrome working. Projects are from my my workflow. Observed 30-35 % improvement in benchmarks and 5-15% improvements in project rendering. Fans are louder with the ssd active, but not unbearably loud.

Funny you ask. I’ve literally replaced everything: motherboard, PSU, CPU, RAM, different 5700, RX 580. The list goes on. I’ve also tested with everything unplugged/minimal setup with different mouse & keyboard even. No luck. I guess it’s Karma or something.
