[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Just captured these Radeon Performance Boost results are from my main Designare Z390 system with PowerColor Red Dragon RX 5700 XT:

My results were pretty good too for both OpenCL and Metal.

I'd already removed WEG from my EFI due to adverse affects on the Radeon VII, so I didn't have any issues with the SSDT (in fact, the PowerPlayTable gave me another 10% or so because I boosted frequency besides adjusting voltages). Also, I'm running Mojave (Catalina is too finicky for me).

The Radeon VII is water-cooled on the GB Z390 Aorus Xtreme Waterforce. Spoiler shows only GeekBench v4 results.

Hi Casey and people, first of all, may thanks wonderful work and also thanks for all the contributors,

I'm configuring the same hardware, just changed to a 9900k,(video card 580), my friend has a Apollo 8 but we haven't manage to get it working. For installing the UAD drivers we had to change the csr from 0x67 to 0x0 in 10.15.4, the installation of the driver went somehow better with this, we manage to get all the security verification for the kexts (i think).

Everything else is working, the USB, the audio, the network cards, WiFi Bluetooth, video acceleration/encoding, MSR 0x0, etc.

We used the efi file from the mini-guide of Catalina fresh install, we put the DSDT for the thunderbolt (SSDT-Z390-DESIGNARE-TB3HP-V4). We have the Thunderbolt TB3 to TB2 USB-C from apple.

Flashing the thunderbolt controller its hard since we don't have the raspberry and with the lockdown is harder to get in my country (also a bit scary to do). And we don't know if we are in the firmware NVM 43 or earlier firmware versions such as NVM 23 and NVM 33 that are more compatible. The bios version is 8.

Any ideas? we have to clue what to do, the UAD meter says 'Device not found' and is not shown under PCI like the other 5 devices (GC titan ridge,GC usb3, intel, etc).

Please can you give us a hint? I remember long time ago I had to configure the controller with windows after installing the drivers. Like a controller activation from the OS...

Thanks

I had a UAD Apollo x6 working with this Designare build last year before firmware was flashed (using an early release SSDT). But this was with Mojave. I never got reliable connections with Catalina (but I never checked after 10.15.2). Even with Mojave, sometimes, I'd have to hot-plug the Apollo to get a connection. Also, I always used a CalDigit dock between the computer and the Apollo.

Fan noise is not an issue with one Vega 64 I have, as it is water-cooled, so I added it back for this computer. (I do have a Vega 56 that I'll test out this weekend.)

Thanks for the modified file it at least told me I added the Vega back correctly. Also the SSDT that Casey put on his post fixes the fan issues and gives me another 1-5k on the Geekbench depending on how lucky. Before kext and SSDT I was pulling around 58 - 61k; with just the kext I was pulling consistent 68k; but with both the kext and SSDT I am seeing 69-70k+. I did see one 75k but I think it was a fluke. No SS I am lazy.

Also seems like my FPS is higher in twin motion and UE Studio.

When I was trying out the Apple TB Display with the Designare, and a Titan Ridge AIC on my Z390 Aorus Pro, I was primarily checking whether the display would work, and what happened on shutdowns and reboots. At that time I don't think I tried sleep. I haven't used the Apple TB Display since, since I don't need two displays and I don't have the desk space.

I just hooked the Apple display up to the TB3 port on the Designare to check what happens on putting the system to sleep. Well it only sleeps for about 2 seconds, then wakes itself up. When it wakes up both monitors are active.

If I were going to use this dual display setup I would have to dig in to resolve the no-sleep issue. (Something is not set properly because if the computer is off and I plug something in the back, it starts up!) Short of solving that issue I could either just leave the displays on with a screensaver, or shut the system down, since booting is so fast. On rebooting both displays are active.

I tried the Apple display plugged into the GC-Titan Ridge AIC in my Z390 Aorus Pro. On boot both displays were active. I could put this hack to normal sleep. On wakeup both displays were active. I did several sleep - wakeup cycles and both displays were always active.

In both hacks I'm using RX-580 graphic cards, if that makes any difference.
Thanks for doing the testing.
Is the Titan Ridge AIC flashed?

Currently, my issue is that waking my Aorus Pro/AR AIC/TB display from sleep. Either by pressing the power button or by a keystroke, it spins up the fans and interior lighting. But the display remains black and the computer isn't accessible via screen sharing. I have to shut the power off. Once rebooted using a second monitor connected (TB still connected but black) shows "no thunderbolt devices" in system report. I have to clear CMOS, reset BIOS settings, unlock MSR, and all is well. Also of interest is that before the "sleep problem" occurs, using only the TB connected at boot, sometimes the display lights up immediately for part of the boot process then goes dark as expected until the desktop appears, and sometimes it is dark until the desktop appears.

Yes, the workaround is to prevent system sleep (screen sleep works OK) and power off at the end of the day. But I am cursed with the engineer's affliction of wanting to know why stuff doesn't work right!

I've spent the last few days on and off trying to come up with a set of steps that reliably reproduces the wake problem so I can describe it here. I'm not quite finished with the testing and documentation.

The testing I've done would suggest my wake problem may be tied to BIOS settings. Are you using the settings as recommended by CaseySJ in post #1?

Thanks!

I have an Asus Maximus Hero X and it definitely has no thunderbolt controller built in, or even a header to add one!
I should have said Maximus IX, and more importantly, Maximus IX Extreme. (Have updated the previous post.)

Sometimes an IP address can get mistakenly blocked by the forum software. It's best to contact @adamsmasher when this happens. Send him your IP that is blocked and an explanation of what happened.
Thanks, although I am unable to send @adamsmasher a direct message. The IP I am unable to access the site from is 86.13.116.170 which is VirginMedia in London. Works fine for me on cellular data or through a VPN.

I'm still experiencing blocks as well on Charter/Spectrum ISP. Cell is still working though, as well as vpn.
