[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Hi all,

first of all big thanks to @CaseySJ for his awesome guide!
Since two days ago I finally installed an XFX Radeon VII on my Hack running 10.15.3
Everything was working fine until today that I noticed what you can see in the video.
This is totally reproducible by turning the display off (either staying idle for 10mins or by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Eject).

Video starts with the display turned off. I press 'esc' to wake it up ...

Anyone else with a similar behaviour??

Thanks,
Takis
Hello @tpep,

We used to see this problem often on an office projector. It was always due to a loose or bad video cable. First thing therefore would be to reattach or find a different cable. Check that the cable is certified for the video signal. For example, if using an HDMI cable to drive a 4K display at 60Hz, the cable must be certified for HDMI 2.0. Similarly, check for DisplayPort 1.2 certification, etc.

Hi guys,

I apologize in advance if this has been answered before but I tried searching this thread and google and didn't find anything.

I followed the 10.15.4 clean install guide and I literally have the exact hardware that was recommended for purchase on the first post. I've attached 3 monitors to my RX 580 (2 DP , 1 HDMI). the monitors are 2k 144hz.

For some reason, the DP monitors work fine but the HDMI is black at start up/wake. I have to go to system preferences to change the resolution to 1080p. Once the screen comes back on, I can change it back to 2k 144hz and it works perfectly fine.

What do I need to change to get the HDMI monitor to display at 2k 144hz on startup and wake?

Thanks for any advice!

We used to think that Sidecar will not work on sysdefs that contain a T2 chip. A real iMac Pro contains a T2 chip. A real iMac 19,1 does not. But more recently we think it might be possible to enable Sidecar even on iMacPro1,1 if you do this:
  • Option 1:
    • Set shikigva=80 in Boot Arguments.
    • Reboot.
    • Does Sidecar work?
  • Option 2: (if option 1 fails)
    • BIOS Setup --> enable iGPU
    • Set shikigva=80 in Boot Arguments.
    • In Clover Configurator, set AAPL,ig-platform-id back to 0x3E980003
Good evening CaseySJ. Hate to bother you but I just tried to reconfigure my rig this way but I goofed when I used Hackintool because I forgot to actually re-enable my IGPU before I did this patch. Now my machine won’t boot. The funny thing is, I never told Hackintool to actually save the new config.plist. What’s even weirder is that I can’t boot from my backup either which is on a separate internal NVMe! Very strange to me. Any suggestions short of a re-install.

Hello @hamzab,

Sounds like you had a very productive day or two! Let me address your questions one by one:
  • AirDrop has been consistent and reliable for me. For example:
    • Open Photos app on iPhone and select one.
    • Tap the share icon followed by the AirDrop icon.
    • After a couple of seconds my iMac appears.
    • Tap the iMac icon and done.
  • However I just noticed that Continuity Camerais not working on my Test Bench. I'll try my main system later. Because I don't use this very much I hadn't noticed it.
    • Will try to find a solution. At least the problem is reproducible here.
  • It's okay to use all USB ports (except the front panel USB 2 of course).
  • The Anker USB 3 hub is also okay.
    • It's not a self-powered hub so just be watchful of power-hungry USB devices.
    • It's okay to leave it connected at all times.
  • Not sure why changing Sound Output device would affect AirDrop, but hey, welcome to Hackintosh!:)

Yes indeed! Haha been a weekend filled with disassembling and assembling this machine! Heatsinks are not my forte so that honestly took up more time than intended!

The hack however is perfect! Sleep works well and is so much more snappier than the machine it replaces. Can’t wait to put it through its paces.

Looking forward to your fix for continuity, however for airdrop, should I keep tinkering and see what happens?

Hello @yugemonz,

Someone reported the very same problem a couple of days ago so I think there might be a systemic issue in WhateverGreen or elsewhere. It might be a good idea to mention this on Insanely Mac where the developer (vit9696) has a fairly routine presence.

Ouch, let's see if this might help:
  • Hackintool aways creates a backup of config.plist
  • Boot from the internal macOS SSD (press F12 at BIOS splash screen and explicitly choose the normal SSD instead of the backup).
  • At the Clover Boot Menu, select the Options icon. In the menu that appears, one of the choices will list all of the .plist files in the CLOVER folder and will allow you to choose any one of them. If you see config-backup.plist or something similar, try selecting that.
  • Also enable Verbose mode from the Clover Boot Menu by pressing Spacebar and using arrow keys to move down to Verbose. Then press spacebar again to toggle it on. And press ESC to return to Clover Boot Menu. If the boot process hangs, capture a photo and post it (after resizing it down to about 1024 pixels in X or Y).l

I have the last question: I want to change my monitor and I thought to buy LG OLED55C9 (55", 4K, OLED) for video editing.
Is it a good idea with my RX 580?
I have two LG OLED 4K TVs and they're quite spectacular. But I've never connected a computer to either of them. I do, however, have two 4K Apple TVs -- one on each. I would suggest checking the LG OLED owner's manual for instructions on how to connect a PC or Gaming Console. It is often necessary to turn off Wide Color, Deep Color or HDR mode, otherwise nothing will appear.

...

It might be good to run a Google search on this.

Or perhaps pair a Bluetooth speaker and move the speaker about 3 meters from the computer. Play music through the speaker. Do you hear any dropouts or stutter? If so, it could indicate a Bluetooth signal issue.

Another suggestion would be to Reset the Bluetooth Module by pressing SHIFT-OPTION while clicking the Bluetooth icon on the menu bar. You will then see this:

What I did is to shutdown the Hackintosh, unplugged the power cable from the monitor, reattached the HDMI cable.
So far everything is working. Will keep an eye on it.
