[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

I have been tirelessly trying for hours to get the SOIC8 clip to stay on the chip, without a dice. Whenever I get it right, it slides right off. It's simply not seeing the chip even if I hold it with my hand on it. I'm using your method @CaseySJ with a 47uf cap and in my case I used two 1K ohm resistors tied in series.

Question : If I disconnect and reconnect the clip while the Pi is on, if the clip is touching all of the connectors, should the Pi see the chip or not?

Here's my setup.

Hello @bugsyraz,

Have you tried the Supplemental Procedure? This is also referenced in Post #1, spoiler #2.

I've been away for a while and noticed an awful lot of what I would consider fairly high end stuff regarding THUNDERBOLT 3 and modifying one of the chips. Just a few questions regarding the z390 Designare:

1) Why is this modification being done?
2) I thought Thunderbolt was working properly but I don't have any thunderbolt devices as of yet. Planning on getting MOTU audio devices. Is there an issue with audio devices and Thunderbolt?
3) This seems to be a non-mandatory modification. What works vs what doesn't work with this mod?

Thanks, Mark
Flashing the Thunderbolt firmware is completely optional. Thunderbolt works regardless (even hot plug works), but there are some limitations. If the information in the post below does not apply to your circumstances, then it is best not to flash.

Has anyone else experienced a delay before the boot loader GUI appears with these patched thunderbolt firmwares? Almost as though the attached devices are being enumerated? It could just be due to the Intel bios on my rig. Dodgy at the best of times..

Following your guide to unlock my MSR and having some problems

1) following the instructions on formatting the USB, didn't create an EFI part ion. Tried a couple of USB's but no luck. I could see the disk in top window of Clover Config' but there was no efi to mount. So I took an old installer and removed the EFI folders and replaced with your NSR EFI zip.
This will happen if we don't select View --> Show all devices and then click the parent name of the USB flash disk on the left side. When you click Erase in Disk Utility, if you don't see three fields (Name, Format, Scheme) then the parent name has not been selected.

I have been suffering the "Can't allocate runtime....Type 2" errors and came across your very detailed guide. Any help would appreciated.

  • Are you running Mojave or Catalina?
  • Did you follow a different guide to setup macOS?
  • If so, open the CLOVER/drivers/UEFI folder. Which memory driver are you using? And do you have slide=0 in Boot Arguments?

Hi, CaseySJ! 1 or 2 months back I followed this guide and successfully built my hackintosh. It's been running successful. But today I tried updating Lilu, Whatevergreen and AppleALC to the latest versions (as per 06/4/20). After rebooting the system, I am getting panics at the boot. I restarted several times, but still the same panic is coming.
I installed using the latest Hackintool, and I followed one guide in this website itself
"Deleted lilu, WhatereGreen and AppleALC from L/E and used to Hackintool to install and rebuild kextcache, then replaced those new kexts with the kexts in EFI folder of macOs partition.
I don't have a backup....Please help meView attachment 460181

Now you know why we keep stressing the need to make backups. Please read the Easy Bootable Backup guide (see Post #1) and make a backup of the system as soon as it's recovered.

Suggestion for Recovery:

Follow the micro-guide linked here, as follows:
  • Start at bullet #3 which says "Boot into Mojave and delete..."
  • Stop at third bullet from the bottom which says "Now attempt an in-place upgrade from..."
    • Perform the steps prior to this one, but do not do this step.
Let us know if you're able to boot back in. Then I can offer some concluding suggestions.

Dear CaseySJ, I know the importance of creating a backup. But at the present situation I was not in a condition to buy new 500GB SSD as the backup drive needs to be same as the OS drive.

I can boot in safe mode though.
I will try doing the steps and get back to you as soon as possible......thanks for helping me

Yes, I've tried that and didn't work. I think the clip was the problem.

Later on, I had a friend come over and help, he ended up soldering all the pins to the chip, managed to flash it successfully.

Now, is thunderbolt supposed to work properly on windows after flashing?

I advise you to buy an external USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 hard drive. My operating system (weighs about 300 GB) through Carbone Cony Cleaner makes a backup in 25 - 30 minutes. Now I do it after each update to the new OS, so that in case of something, roll back.

A 1 TB hard drive now costs about $ 35, but buy it fast with a speed of 7200 rpm. Such a purchase is the price of your peace of mind, which in which case you can roll back.
