[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

For 4K monitors, the on-board HDMI port only goes up to 30Hz (HDMI 1.4). For non-4K monitors, higher refresh rates are supported.

The HDMI monitor is only 1920x1080. Works at 60hz, but not initially after login. Initially it'll only work at 50hz. It's a cheap AOC gaming monitor.

@CaseySJ I had lost bluetooth prior to upgrading to the latest Catalina, and decided to try regain BT.
So I took out everything from the system except a clean formatted M2 drive, my Radeon VII and the Fenvi card.
I then installed Mohave carefully and after I had it configured and had BT working again, then upgraded to the latest Catalina and it is working again.

Not sure what changed as I have followed the the forum with the Designare carefully. Glad to have the system upgraded and working now.

@CaseySJ Say I also am water-cooling my Z390 Designare with only 1 240mm radiator .... but amazingly enough with my EVA water block and 16mm OD PETG my temperatures for 24 hours are no more than 35degrees C ... also I tried this last weekend to upgrade to Catalina from Mohave 10.14.6 and failed miserably and had to flash my bios to F8 and reload from my sabrent backup .... should I send you my current picture of library/extensions and my config.plist ?

Good idea -- I'll create a new section entitled Extended List of Compatible Devices with Thunderbolt Bus. It will include devices that began to work after new firmware was flashed.

Did the OWC 10G Ethernet Adapter work without Thunderbolt Bus? I believe the CalDigit TS3 Plus dock has worked before.

eGPUs, Thunderbolt Ethernet Bridge, Target Disk Mode, and perhaps some LaCie storage arrays(?) will be among the entries in the new section.
Yes the OCW 10G Ethernet did work prior to Thunderbolt bus.

Hey Casey thanks for the reply but I have Google wifi and I don't think you can do that with it. Ill figure it out

thanks

Matt
Are you using a WiFi/Bluetooth PCI-e card, or are you using a Bluetooth USB dongle?

Hi,

How I can update to Catalina from Mojave 10.14.6? I followed the links of beginning of post but my hackintosh stuck on Apple logo without bar.

Thanks and greetings!

try booting in verbose mode and see where the boot stalls.
verbose boot: at the clover screen, use the arrow keys to select your boot drive and then press the space bar. next, use arrow keys to move to Verbose Boot and use the enter key to put a checkmark there. then arrow back up to Boot with selected options and press Return.

Oh that's unfortunate. What was it that Sherlock Holmes would say..."When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

If the CPU is the only thing left unchanged, then...

But before jumping to that (which is a very expensive proposition), please try this:
  • Remove the internal macOS SSD.
  • Remove the AMD GPU.
  • Disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    • Which keyboard and mouse are you using? At this point I can't even dismiss the keyboard and mouse!
  • Disconnect all Thunderbolt devices.
  • Disconnect all Windows drives.
  • Connect a spare SATA SSD.
  • Follow the Catalina 10.15.4 guide (including unlocking NVRAM) very carefully. One little deviation could spell doom.
    • Follow the sections for Internal GPU (iGPU). Ensure iGPU is enabled and Initial Display Output is set to IGFX.
    • Connect monitor to rear Thunderbolt port (if you have USB-C to DisplayPort cable) or HDMI port.
    • After Catalina 10.15.4 is installed, check for stability.
Thanks, going to try a few more things here, and then that, and if that doesn't work , then I guess I'll try swapping the CPU. I suppose I could RMA it and then figure something out while it's gone for 2 months or whatever....

Have you applied thermal paste properly -- a pea-sized amount in the center of the die? Do CPU temperatures fluctuate wildly or stay well in the safe zone?
