[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

19,1 vs iMac Pro 1,1 is what I tried. Same benchmarks really CPU wise. Graphics performance seemed to depend on the software being used. Generally, I got better performance in most video apps with iMac Pro 1,1 SMBIOS, probably because igpu was disabled.

What is really strange is that my benchmarks in geekbench 5 went up by 10k (10k!) in both SMBIOS profiles when set the PCIE x4 slot to CPU side vs PCH side in BIOS. I say strange because when I do that, the PCIE lanes for my 5700xt go down from 16x to 8x, so I’m supposed to be getting less performance....maybe there’s more to it. I tried Mac Pro 7,1 but it’s pretty incompatible with this hardware setup.
oh man , ill try it now , what your scores are?

I have an odd thing happening where my Mac restarts when testing VEGA VII in Geekbench 5 like every other time. Also I don't hear fans speeding up when under load. I'm not sure if its an app or my settings. Is a fresh install from a Mini Guide 10.15.4? Anyone knows why that would be happening?

That's the million dollar question! We're just waiting for someone (like you :)) to test an Antelope audio interface on a flashed Designare Z390. You would be the first person to do this...

Copying @qthegaijin @franzasensi because of their interest in this.
Thanks man, I can't wait to make use of the AFX2DAW stuff!

Sorry for the late reply. Are you running Mojave or Catalina?

It sounds as if the HDMI frame buffer patch is not installed. If you are using a USB-C to DisplayPort cable connected to one of the Thunderbolt ports, then it's easy: Just follow this guide from Post #1:

If you installed Catalina from the Mini-Guide, then I would be surprised if you're facing this problem because config-IGPU.plist located in the ZIP file has this patch pre-applied.

Just to chime in here, if you do have the frame buffer installed, when I upgraded to Catalina I could not get the HDMI to work at 60hz after the login screen unless I put the machine to sleep and woke it up again, even though the monitor supports 60hz. Switching the monitor to 50hz in OSX system prefs fixed it (I used a second monitor attached to the thunderbolt port to do this).

@FormerUser-50757,

Hopefully it's the motherboard. A similar thing happened very recently to a family member. We replaced PSU and CPU before deciding to replace motherboard. It was the motherboard. Let us know how it goes.

Just swapped the motherboard and tested. Same issue unfortunately.

At this point it’s so hard to if it’s hardware or software at fault. I guess I could try swapping the CPU but that seems so unlikely.

As far as BiOS settings go, the only tweaks I’ve done outside of the guide are fan settings - which I’m assuming doesn’t matter. Thermals all seem fine.

I suppose I could take it out of the case and see if that’s something.

Or, like others have suggested, roll back to Mojave and get rid of the 5700xt and see what happens, but the fact that the rx 580 does the same thing in Catalina makes me hesistant to try rolling back.

For 4K monitors, the on-board HDMI port only goes up to 30Hz (HDMI 1.4). For non-4K monitors, higher refresh rates are supported.

Oh that's unfortunate. What was it that Sherlock Holmes would say..."When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

If the CPU is the only thing left unchanged, then...

But before jumping to that (which is a very expensive proposition), please try this:
  • Remove the internal macOS SSD.
  • Remove the AMD GPU.
  • Disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    • Which keyboard and mouse are you using? At this point I can't even dismiss the keyboard and mouse!
  • Disconnect all Thunderbolt devices.
  • Disconnect all Windows drives.
  • Connect a spare SATA SSD.
  • Follow the Catalina 10.15.4 guide (including unlocking NVRAM) very carefully. One little deviation could spell doom.
    • Follow the sections for Internal GPU (iGPU). Ensure iGPU is enabled and Initial Display Output is set to IGFX.
    • Connect monitor to rear Thunderbolt port (if you have USB-C to DisplayPort cable) or HDMI port.
    • After Catalina 10.15.4 is installed, check for stability.
