Apple Finally Buying AMD CPUs?

Wow this is real news!

Since its switch to the x86 machine architecture from PowerPC in the mid-2000s, Apple has been consistent with Intel as its sole supplier of CPUs for its Macbooks, iMac desktops, and Mac Pro workstations. The company's relationship with rival AMD has been limited to sourcing discrete GPUs. If pieces of code from a MacOS beta is anything to go buy, Apple could bite the AMD bullet very soon. References to several AMD processors were found in MacOS 10.15.4 Beta 1. These include the company's "Picasso," "Renoir," and "Van Gogh" APUs.

I'm actually wondering...I was following the development of Ryzen on macOS, and at this moment it's pretty stable. Is there a chance that Tonymacx86 every going to support AMD?

Good point with the stability, the Newegg and Amazon market share support could be a plus for the buyers guide.

Good point. My kid's school here had a whole IT suite of iMacs, but had so many problems (not sure what) they BootCamped the lot and ran them as Windows machines ... It was a bit surreal walking in and seeing all these Macs, thinking to myself "Wow, impressive!" and then realising they were all running Windows.

IT guys don’t know Macs they lack the training its all for windows. There may also be an issue with apps only available on windows.

What is there really to know honestly? Back like a million years ago when I worked at Earthlink and Dial up was still cool the training class for Mac was like 45 mins if you were Mac only Tech they did not bother training you in windows. Not sure that a Mac has gotten more complicated since then but windows has for sure. Mac Networks are seriously easy.

On Topic for me to ever go back to an AMD CPU I would need them to show they were going to remain a player for a long time. Last time they grew some balls and got into the game they decided to quit trying to keep up.

after the whole nvidia fiasco was officially over
I knew this was the next move by apple
I said to myself, I switch to AMD GPU then the apple switches to AMD CPU
so I have to drop intel and nvidia

no thanks I pass, honestly people are falling for the hype, many are jumping in the AMD bandwagon
mark my works, intel will get back on business
the problem that intel is having is due to their facilities, that's why all the shortage etc
that is why AMD is gaining on the market share
because there are almost no intel CPU available to buy almost any where

here is the deal
it is known that newer hardware will always be better than older or previous hardware
so i don't really understand why people are acting all surprise
we been here before, intel has dominated the market for decades then AMD comes out with something new
but it really never last long

people are comparing cascade lake a refresh of a refresh against AMD latest CPU
of course AMD has the upper hand, for now, they are the one with the latest and newest hardware out in the market
while intel is struggling to produce even their older chips

once intel fixes their internal problems they will catch up once again and they will beat AMD for the trillion time

meanwhile i rather wait, I'm not going to spend my money on any AMD hardware
CPU or GPU
we all know about the disaster with the 5700 XT on mac and windows
poor performance on mac os and game crashing nightmare on windows

AMD is going all out for core count, intel should counter with insanely fast core speed

hello there pastrychef, i really like your post about intel 8 core vs AMD 8 core
yes the AMD CPU has faster MT while the intel 8 cores has faster ST

that intel CPU was made for pure gaming, that's why it has that fast ST core speed
but the AMD CPU it seems like is made more for MT that's why it looses again intel CPU in ST

it is all fair everybody has their taste and opinion, you are free to choose
but that's why i left mac os behind because i wasn't free to choose
i really like the OS but I'm waiting for Timmy boy to go away

intel will come back and they will reclaim their throne and they will sit there for a few years
like always, all these youtubers, badwagoners that are telling people to jump to AMD
are going to be the first one to jump back to intel, they are many things that they don't tell you but i will cut my post here because is already getting a bit too long, i will save more for later

i'm not a fan boy, I simply don't like AMD

peace

While I agree that AMD is not in it to win it at least not for the long haul. Running Mac OS has never been about choice but more so every post I have read from you looks like a temper tantrum because you did not get your way. If you left Mac OS behind then what are you doing here? Just be on your way!

Could I get a link or the background on the 5700XT problems you speak of? Not doubting, just considering buying one is all.

What the else are people supposed to compare to??? It's latest AMD vs latest Intel. You can't expect people to compare latest AMD to unreleased Intel tech.

IDK about Windows, but 5700 XT seems to be working nicely on macOS now.

Here you go. Gaming benchmarks at the bottom of the article.

Well you know in the movie industry they scale for inflation maybe we could just scale to PCI-E 4.... LOL! However, it is my firm belief that if intel just did that little change from PCI-E 3 to PCI-E 4 they would easily snatch the lead. I give AMD some credit for leading the charge and pushing intel to innovate or die, I just do not see intel rolling over. IF in the next 3 years or so AMD is still leading the charge while commanding a significant cost difference then they might be on my upgrade table. For now the easy path forward for me is intel chip.

Intel has previously stated they have no plans for pcie 4, they are waiting for pcie 5. Their pcie 4 Optane drive development team asked vendors to test on AMD systems.

Once Intel moves to 7nm they will be back on top, in fact if the latest leaks are true the 10nm is claiming 95% performance gain over their 14nm. If that is true 10nm will overtake anything AMD can dish out over the next 2 years.
